This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Avatar 7:12pm Flash Strap:

  7:15pm spookcity:

Avatar 7:16pm Flash Strap:

  7:19pm Doug Schulkind:

Hello, Mr Explorer! Hello, neighbors!
  7:20pm spookcity:

Avatar 7:20pm Flash Strap:

  7:22pm Doug Schulkind:

Nice to hang with you, spookcity. I’m still just coming up for air, post grad school.
Avatar 7:23pm Flash Strap:

how's it feel to be a true master Doug?
Avatar 7:26pm Flash Strap:

this whole Urban Sax record is pretty wild stuff
Avatar 7:26pm Flash Strap:

but i don't think i've heard any other Urban Sax LPs, now that I think of it
  7:27pm Doug Schulkind:

It feels pretty untrue, Flash Strap.
Avatar 7:28pm Flash Strap:

ah yes – boy can i ever relate, Doug
Avatar 7:34pm Flash Strap:

really splendid homegrown album art for this one: img.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm melinda:

Hi chums! Glad to have Explorers Room for my soundtrack as I prepare for my flight to Texas tomorrow.
Avatar 7:36pm Flash Strap:

ah Hello Melinda! headed anyplace fun?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm chresti:

Hi Melinda! The cover art is especially fantastico! @Flash
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm chresti:

RO LAND `i like that spacing
Avatar 7:42pm Flash Strap:

it's a really special album. i believe all the parts are played by Roland Young himself, so that seems to be three manifestations of his self on the cover
  7:43pm spookcity:

you are on fire today buddy
Avatar 7:44pm Flash Strap:

ah thanks pal. you can't go wrong with this track y'know, it's a killa everytime
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm chresti:

YAY! Double dose of Flash!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm melinda:

@Flash going to Austin for my dad's memorial service. There might be some fun at some point but mostly stuff related to that.
Avatar 7:55pm Flash Strap:

Sincerest condolences, Melinda
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm chresti:

I like this version -
Avatar 7:55pm Flash Strap:

it really slaps
Avatar 8:00pm Flash Strap:

Thanks guys
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm chresti:

This is great-
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

I agree, chresti. I've had it around ever since it got reissued and i remember thinking it was cool but only recently actually *listened* to it, and this track completely enthralled me

Hey Flash and time-displaced Explorers
Avatar 8:06pm Flash Strap:

hey doc! great to see you
Avatar 8:14pm Flash Strap:

the vocals on this Kente album are so weird and brilliant, the only thing I can compare it to is Young Americans
Avatar 8:18pm just julia:

real nice to hear those Heartbreaker voices, real nice to be here on a tuesday of all things. hiya.
Avatar 8:19pm Flash Strap:

Hi Just Julia! The faces of those voices, btw: img.discogs.com...
Avatar 8:19pm Flash Strap:

great to have you in the Tuesday room, JJ
Avatar 8:28pm Flash Strap:

Love Cry Want is such a mindblower. not enough people acknowledge this
  8:30pm Jeff g. via app:

I'll second that emotion.
Avatar 8:31pm Flash Strap:

Hiya Jeff!
Avatar 8:35pm Flash Strap:

Parts of Moshi are so heavy it's crazy
  8:37pm YellowBird:

Stopped in to say how wild this track is....and noticed some familiar names in the comments. HI.
Avatar 8:38pm Flash Strap:

Hey Bird!
  8:39pm YellowBird:

hi there, Captain! This show is supreme.
Avatar 8:40pm Flash Strap:

gracias amiga
Avatar 8:43pm Flash Strap:

this one's from the Black Jazz label; I think they only did about 20 or so LPs and every one is killer...
Avatar 8:48pm Flash Strap:

damn
Avatar 8:51pm Flash Strap:

Leon Thomas: what a weird singer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm chresti:

idiosyncratic is ideal in all things
Avatar 9:00pm coelacanth∅:

hey Flash and Explorers
Avatar 9:01pm northguineahills:

got here somewhat in time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm chresti:

Heya!
Avatar 9:02pm Flash Strap:

I agree, Chresti
Avatar 9:03pm Flash Strap:

Coelacanth, NGH! great to see you both!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm chresti:

Jeepers! Yodeling too!
Avatar 9:04pm coelacanth∅:

i showed up 2 hours late and a few minutes early! ...Leon Thomas is one singer i really can't stand, but the music here is straight up stellar
Avatar 9:05pm Flash Strap:

he's hit and miss imo but I mostly get down with him. he has a more straight-ahead mode that I often dislike intensely (esp. on later releases), tho i think it worked very well on Willow Weep For Me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm chresti:

New to me- this Leon- such a frenetic pace
Avatar 9:06pm Flash Strap:

plus, yeah, he plays with top guys
Avatar 9:07pm Flash Strap:

@chresti: i know, it's just demented
Avatar 9:11pm coelacanth∅:

he sure does. for a long time i thought i didn't like Pharoah Sanders because i kept hearing only recordings with Thomas on them - i thought it was Sanders singing. (or "yodeling"...[it's not really yodeling])
Avatar 9:12pm northguineahills:

@coel: I thought it was the Pharaoh as well....
Avatar 9:14pm coelacanth∅:

ha that's funny ngh!
well, rest in peace Leon.
Avatar 9:15pm Flash Strap:

from what I understand it's a weird, totally singular attempt to approximate a pygmy vocal technique (i've seen it credited as "pygmy yodelling" or some such thing). i've never gotten the impression it's particularly rigorous, but I don't know

it's sort of a grift but I think it's cool, i love him on those Pharoah recordings
Avatar 9:16pm Flash Strap:

but it's not hard to imagine why someone wouldn't dig it, i should say
Avatar 9:17pm coelacanth∅:

i used to do that as a child. ...i have this stupid thing that makes me appreciate some things less if i can do them!
(i know. stupid.)
Avatar 9:18pm Flash Strap:

it is the same with me and certain art techniques, tho I try to stifle the reaction when i can
Avatar 9:20pm Flash Strap:

this Kamili is quite a bit earlier than the Kalima, but it sounds as though the reverse is true. that Elvin Jones record is the real deal
Avatar 9:21pm coelacanth∅:

i think too, maybe - that because it's limited in it's application...like the bagpipes -i might be able to like it if it was only a rare showing; but it's his thing, and it's always the same.
...anyway, i'm not dead yet - i might come around to it some day!
Avatar 9:22pm coelacanth∅:

the Elvin Jones machine blew my socks off. now my feet are cold.
Avatar 9:23pm Flash Strap:

next track should warm yer toes for sure
  9:25pm Doctorjazz:

Great set!
Avatar 9:25pm coelacanth∅:

[warming up,thanks!]
Avatar 9:25pm Flash Strap:

thanks Doc!
Avatar 9:27pm Flash Strap:

Shepp is so powerful
Avatar 9:32pm northguineahills:

what evan said...
Avatar 9:33pm Flash Strap:

very high probability that it was Leon again, performing that vocal expectoration. he is elsewhere on Kwanza but not credited on this track
Avatar 9:34pm Flash Strap:

this one has one of the best latter-era Blue Note covers, and is one of the best covers ever imo: img.discogs.com...
Avatar 9:36pm Flash Strap:

Alice Coltrane on harp, produced by Duke Pearson
Avatar 9:38pm geezerette:

This set is Heaven, Evan.
Avatar 9:38pm Flash Strap:

hello geezerette! splendid to see you and very nice to hear, thank you
Avatar 9:38pm geezerette:

Hey there, people!
Avatar 9:41pm Flash Strap:

hey there pal. how goes it
Avatar 9:43pm geezerette:

Good! (Who, me?)
And you?
Avatar 9:44pm Flash Strap:

yes you! ah, i'm good too
Avatar 9:47pm geezerette:

Are you making new collages now, or in a fallow period, exploring new sources?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm chresti:

Time to go home. SSee you later. Hi bye Geez!
Avatar 9:51pm Flash Strap:

adios Chresti! thanks for hanging out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm chresti:

Thank you flash
Avatar 9:51pm geezerette:

Hey Chresti! See you next time.
Avatar 9:52pm Flash Strap:

i'm working extremely hard on a new collage book, G.!
Avatar 9:52pm coelacanth∅:

unfortunately i was in the kitchen and didn't hear any vocals in the Shepp track. i say unfortunately because if there's a vocal that could be Leon but it's not so obvious that might be good for me to hear - to exercise my open-ness.
Avatar 9:52pm coelacanth∅:

ciao chresti
Avatar 9:53pm Flash Strap:

@G: here's a page in progress, tho it looks much better now: pbs.twimg.com...
Avatar 9:54pm geezerette:

Evan, wow! Hope you'll let us know when it's finished. Cheers!
Avatar 9:54pm coelacanth∅:

that's beautiful,Evan.
Avatar 9:55pm Flash Strap:

haha it will never be finished
Avatar 9:55pm Flash Strap:

but seriously, thank you very much
Avatar 9:55pm coelacanth∅:

(hope you don't mind i peeked, though your link wasn't addressed to me!)
Avatar 9:56pm Flash Strap:

oh, of course not, thank you for peeping

Party TIME
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm chresti:

fANTASTIC ART!
Avatar 9:58pm Flash Strap:

this LP is a showdown between two of the three major toasters with albinism
Avatar 9:58pm coelacanth∅:

i once, when i was around 22?, collected an old briefcase full of pages ripped out of catalogues and such - to make a collage book. it was going to be like a mockery of ads and marketing (but with some beauty, as well as humor). i think i got 4 pages done then life happened.
Avatar 9:59pm Flash Strap:

tho purpleman frequently had the gall to just go by the name yellowman, if you can believe it
Avatar 9:59pm geezerette:

Looks incredible even in this version. Collage is the closest visual art gets to both poetry and music. Can't explain, but I'm sure you know what I mean.
Avatar 10:00pm geezerette:

Hiya Coel!
Avatar 10:00pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Evan!
Avatar 10:00pm coelacanth∅:

hey G!
Avatar 10:01pm Flash Strap:

thanks everyone

and thanks for the collage love. it is a noble medium and i'm proud to participate. see you thursday, we can pick all this back up again
Avatar 10:02pm geezerette:

:) Have a good week!
