I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

PTSD is really a very recent thing people admit to. My parents suffered from post-World War II PTSD but nobody did much about it. Vietnam vets were probably the first group I know of where people started to truly acknowledge the PTSD they dealt with.

  10:10pm JakeGould:

“In 1980, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) added PTSD to the third edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) nosologic classification scheme (2). Although controversial when first introduced, the PTSD diagnosis has filled an important gap in psychiatric theory and practice. From an historical perspective, the significant change ushered in by the PTSD concept was the stipulation that the etiological agent was outside the individual (i.e., a traumatic event) rather than an inherent individual weakness (i.e., a traumatic neurosis). The key to understanding the scientific basis and clinical expression of PTSD is the concept of "trauma."”

Avatar 10:10pm TDK60:

Thanks for speaking on this Mayuko. Just read @ those vet stats today.
  10:12pm herb.nyc:

Just tuned in 10' ago. Sad statistic about veteran soldier suicides, Mayuko. Thank you for telling us. (Relatedly, there have been 5 taxi/livery suicides in past 5 months in NYC. I used Lyft for first time 10 days ago, so I feel somewhat complicit. There will be a rally at 1pm tomw, B'way and Murray st, NYC. Sponsored by Taxi Workers Alliance.). re Irish thread, I've a cyber fiancée and she uses name eejit.
  10:12pm JakeGould:

Also, 1980 or so—right after PTSD was formally recognized—Reagan cut mental health funding. So it’s such bullshit… In the 1980s you really still had tons of Vietnam war veterans all over. And then Reagan does that?
Avatar 10:12pm Franco Twinkie:

John Fahey did not serve and he suffered from every thing you list above.
  10:13pm Danne D:

  10:16pm JakeGould:

Also, if you think about it, the whole “wild west” that has be so romanticized in the world is based on ex Civil War soldiers just being kicked out into the world on their own. So you have all of these crazed ex-soldiers basically becoming mercenaries in the wild west of the 1800s.

The Sergio Leone westerns really did a decent job of connecting the Civil War to the cowboy B.S. happening at the time.
Avatar 10:16pm TDK60:

"Meet" Wikip pg. says harmonica, not melodica..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm coelacanth∅:

i know people presently who served in vietnam. they drink every afternoon.
...anyone who knows even 1/2 the scumbag things reagan did will take him doing that as no surprise.

Avatar 10:26pm Mayuko:

@geezerette I saw this piece at the met museum when they had ww1 art exhibition. Many powerful pieces were there!
  10:27pm herb.nyc:

vg Donovan song. I'm reminded of pete seeger's "waist deep in the big muddy". Wiki says: The song tells the story of a platoon wading in a river in Louisiana on a practice patrol in 1942. Imperiously ignoring his sergeant's concerns, the captain orders the platoon to continue with himself in the lead until they are finally up to their necks. Suddenly, the captain drowns and the sergeant instantly orders the unit to turn back to the original shore. It turns out the captain was not aware that the river was deeper with a joining stream upriver. The narrator declines to state an obvious moral but intimates from what he has read in the paper that his nation itself is being led into similar peril by authoritarian fools. Each verse ends with a line noting that "the big fool said to push on" except for the final verse, which changes to the present tense, and the fourth verse which says "the captain dead and gone." The story is similar to the Ribbon Creek incident, which occurred in 1956.

Another Pete Seeger song, off same record as "waist deep..." is "my name is leeza kalvedge"(sp?). Lyrics are via a letter a California woman wrote to protest the nearby bomb factory, early 1960s. Relatedly, she grew up in Germany during the Holocaust. A very chilling and inspiring song. It brings tears to my eyes (I'm a wimp).

@devlawn @TDK60 Yah. It is a powerful song, which was basically the reason I thought of playing it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm Ivan:

Donavan's is very close to Buffy Sainte-Marie's original. I feel it has a bit more power/relevance with a Native woman sining it. btw Great Show Mayuko!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm coelacanth∅:

(actually a Buffy Sainte-Marie song)
i just feel for the vets and what they went -and maybe are still going through; regardless of whether i agree with their reasoning or not. ...and i've known some vets that quite regretted joining the military, though they generally wont say that straight out.
- of course it's not them responsible for creating the situation; but it is true that if everyone refused to participate the warmongers wouldn't be able to proceed in their shenanigans.

I haven't caught up with everything on the comment board yet, but I really appreciate you all sharing these stories. I am still learning about the wars and veterans/survivors in the US. Will read all the comments again carefully on my way home!

Zats, I dozed off near the end. Thanks, Mayuko. Beautiful show tonight. Have a good week. My dad was in the army in the 50s and his unit almost got sent to Korea. I'm glad they didn't go.
