I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm listener james from westwood:

Afternoon, Mayuko and all!! And wow, seconding the birthday wishes!
Avatar 12:04pm Mayuko:

My radio family fred! Thank you for the bday wishes and sharing the story about African music & WFMU last week. Sorry I haven't been able to respond.
Avatar 12:04pm Mayuko:

My comrades Gary and james! Glad to have you here!!
Avatar 12:06pm Mayuko:

& thank you for the bday wishes, james!
  12:08pm rbrt:

hi hi
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Mayuko and Mayukolings
Happy Birthday Mayuko!
  12:08pm rbrt:

this eternal morning track is really goooood
  12:09pm rbrt:

and sad and haunted
  12:09pm rbrt:

and I guess Happy Birthday Mayuko?!
Avatar 12:13pm Mayuko:

Whoa, rbrt, your new icon bein so goth, you should be careful. There was this lady who was screaming "BLACK IS A COLOR OF DEATH! DEATH!! DEATH!!!" at a newly painted mural (with lots of black color in it) that I took part of.
Avatar 12:14pm Mayuko:

Hi coelacanth∅, thanks for the bday wishes and tuning in!!!
Avatar 12:15pm Mayuko:

People in Hiroshima might say the color of death is white because of the a-bomb explosion being so, so bright white light.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm coelacanth∅:

- and i thought black was the color of my true Love's hair.
  12:16pm rbrt:

the color fo death is white...now that's interesting
Avatar 12:18pm northguineahills:

Hair and square!
Avatar 12:19pm fred:

@Mayuko: Have you heard of Hiroshi Sugimoto? I booked a ticket for a show of his that will take place in September. It seems to mix dance, music, and theater. I won't understand a single word, but I don't care
Avatar 12:19pm northguineahills:

White was traditionally the color of death in Japan and China. (and other east Asian countries).
Avatar 12:20pm Polyus:

Stuck at work on a Saturday but I have Play Vertigo. . .not all is lost.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hello, Mayuko and players. Happy birthday. I hope you had fun.
  12:24pm P-90:

Happy Birthday Mayuko!
Also: great job filing in for Goddamn Dave Whats-his-name on FM radio! You're becoming quite a big star these days...
Avatar 12:25pm Mayuko:

@northguineahills You're right! Didn't even have to bring up a-bomb. White is the attire for dead people in my country. I'll scream that back at this nut job lady the next time she attack us, haha!
  12:25pm rw:

Good morning! Birthday?! Happy Birthday Week Mayuko! Such a somber (if hauntingly beautiful) opening, but I guess I would expect nothing less. I need to head out now but hello to all the Vertiginous. Have a good show / weekend!
  12:26pm P-90:

And congratulations on the lovely mural at Fresh Kills Park!
  12:26pm rbrt:

painting is dangerous lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm coelacanth∅:

i've just learned that the word i've known to mean "hair" for about 3 decades, "kami", also means "god"...(?)
  12:28pm rbrt:

white is probably such a better death color when you think about it lol
  12:28pm rw:

Holy cow. Please everyone stop being so darned interesting. I really need to go...
Avatar 12:29pm Mayuko:

@fred is it the same Hiroshi Sugimoto the famous photographer? I seem to remember he did something with Noh performance?? Maybe I'm completely wrong about this.
Avatar 12:29pm Mayuko:

@fred is it the same Hiroshi Sugimoto the famous photographer? I seem to remember he did something with Noh performance?? Maybe I'm completely wrong about this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm coelacanth∅:

rw there is nothing more important than this
Avatar 12:29pm Mayuko:

Hallos, Polyus, Ken, and P-90! Glad to have you all here!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm tmoyo:

Happy birthday Mayuko!
checking in before going to bed. woke up super early today.

@coelacanth, kami also means paper.
Avatar 12:32pm Mayuko:

@rw Have a beautiful weekend to you too!!! & thanks for the bday wishes!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm coelacanth∅:

tmoyo - oh no!
Avatar 12:33pm Mayuko:

@P-90 aw thanks re: Freshkills!
Avatar 12:33pm fred:

@Mayuko: Yeah, that's him. The performance is called Sambaso, the brochure says it's based on something called Kyogen, but I don't trust this much
  12:33pm rbrt:

just when you think you nailed a meaning down
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm coelacanth∅:

(...actually english is just the same in that way. confusing.)
  12:33pm rbrt:

paper hair god
Avatar 12:34pm Mayuko:

Good evening / morning tmoyo!! Thanks for tuning in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm coelacanth∅:

paper god hair
  12:35pm rbrt:

tmoyo is the person in japan?...late there
Avatar 12:35pm Mayuko:

I can cut all of those kamis. I cut my own hair. Perhaps I can cut god too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm tmoyo:

these are the Chinese characters for each meaning
髪 = hair, 神=god 紙=paper
same sound with slightly different intonations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm tmoyo:

yes indeedd rbrt, 1:35. nighty night all!
  12:37pm rbrt:

night tmoyo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm tmoyo:

haha mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm coelacanth∅:

gnight tmoyo!
and Thanks for clarification
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm coelacanth∅:

if god has paper hair you could cut it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm coelacanth∅:

(and you'd be cutting paper, hair and god at the same time)
Avatar 12:41pm fred:

This kami thing could yield a confusing version of rock-paper-scissors
Avatar 12:41pm northguineahills:

Wow, that Richard Kirk is from 1974, I didn't know he was making that sort of music back then (I should have known).
  12:41pm rbrt:

fred that's really funny lol
  12:43pm P-90:

@coel: note that these kami aren't quite "gods" in the Western sense, they are closer to the Western idea of "spirits" that represent particular energies in nature and life, and sometimes are associated with the moody or magical qualities of particular places.
Avatar 12:45pm Mayuko:

@fred ah, 三番叟!You heard that on my show before very long time ago (and I seem to remember you liked it.) Many Japanese native speakers including myself often don't understand what they're saying in Kyogen and Noh so no worries. haha!
Avatar 12:46pm Mayuko:

Paper is made of trees and trees might be the best gods on earth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Doug Schulkind:

Good day, Mayuko and all!
  12:48pm P-90:

It's Give The Drummer Guru Doug!
Greetings, Doug!
Avatar 12:48pm fred:

Doug! Belated happy birthday to you too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm coelacanth∅:

P-90 Thank you...and i like that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm listener james from westwood:

This Su Tissue is exquisite.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm coelacanth∅:

hi Doug and Happy Birthday, belated i guess? (or maybe redundantly!), to you too!
Avatar 12:51pm Mayuko:

Thanks for tuning in Joe and melinda!!
Avatar 12:51pm fred:

I agree with ljfw, this Su Tissue is really good. It reminds me of Steve Reich in a way
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm coelacanth∅:

hi melinda

- and what james said^... very like the necks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm coelacanth∅:

(but far preceding the necks)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Stanley:

I Gemini.
Nice music. Likes.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Dropof Goldensun:

Hi coelacanth and happy belated birthday Mayuko!
Avatar 1:02pm northguineahills:

Can we hear Penderecki's "Threnody for Hiroshima"?
  1:04pm rbrt:

radiation is crazzzzzy
Avatar 1:04pm northguineahills:

errr..."Threnody for the victims of Hiroshima"
Avatar 1:05pm northguineahills:

I can't remember if I wished you a happy solar orbit anniversary last week, if I didn't, feliz cumpleanos, Mayuko!
Avatar 1:06pm fred:

That's a wonderful story, though that might not be the right word
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Dropof Goldensun:

Thank you for sharing that story with us Mayuko.
Avatar 1:12pm Mayuko:

@Stanley Thanks for tuning in, great to have another Gemini club member here! Irene and Rob W and Doug and Bryce and Joel st G and Squirrel Carcass Rich are in da club! (I think.) Pretty good club to be in, I'd say!
Avatar 1:12pm Mayuko:

Good afternoon, Dropof Goldensun!! Welcome on board, Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Ken From Hyde Park:

This one sounds like it's based on a Pink Floyd song.
Avatar 1:14pm Mayuko:

I wish I knew more about the bookstore, but I don't think much detail is known to begin with. Just some more photos

Avatar 1:15pm northguineahills:

I was going to PF jamming w/ the Dead at their more cosmic moments.
  1:15pm rbrt:

I'm amused by the name "Bookseller Atom" like atomic?
Avatar 1:18pm northguineahills:

One of the first thing I'd need after a nuclear holocaust, would be books to keep one sane.

The English was probably to attract the occupation troops.

@rbrt: you see, it's all just a crazy coincidence, the bookseller's name is Atom.
Avatar 1:20pm Mayuko:

@rbrt I think Bookseller Atom is named after Atomic Bomb, whoever opened up this store must have been a pretty bold person.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm coelacanth∅:

in the us it'd be called "groundzero book store"
Avatar 1:23pm Mayuko:

@ngh yeah, that might have been the purpose re: English signs, though Japanese people had been using English in commercial signs and product packages and all which was upsetting the JP empire govt.
Avatar 1:24pm fred:

Damn, I just realized I booked two different dance shows on the same day. So dumb. I somehow confused 3/20 and 3/28 when juggling my three dance booking forms
Avatar 1:26pm Mayuko:

@coelacanth∅ ha! feels like that makes me imagine the impact of this bookstore opened in the ruins much more accurately.
Avatar 1:26pm Mayuko:

@fred 3/20? Are you booking tix for the next year already?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm coelacanth∅:

Mayuko i just hope he didn't move back in too soon, in regard to radiation
  1:32pm rbrt:

I would love to know what kind of books were inside
  1:32pm Gary via app:

This is extraordinary
Avatar 1:33pm fred:

Yeah, that's why I missed last week show. Getting tickets for contemporary dance is tough here. This will be a bountiful year: I already have tickets for 40 dance shows (not counting that unfortunate duplicate), 10 music shows (including Ulzhan Baybussinova!), and a play about Nina Simone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm coelacanth∅:

oh yeah rbrt. i'd love to go back in time and just walk in there (understanding japanese though) and look around.
Avatar 1:36pm Mayuko:

@coelacanth∅ one of the photos was taken in 1946, so it was there already at least a year later. I'd like to know when he opened it too!
Avatar 1:36pm Mayuko:

@rbrt Me too!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm coelacanth∅:

fred, a play about Nina Simone -circling back to "kurokami"...

- anyway, if it's that hard to get tix you could find someone to buy those extras,no?
Avatar 1:37pm fred:

I'll be seeing Rosas 10 times in 4 month, and the same show two days in a row. Then again, I already did that for the same show (Rain) years ago. This time my favorite dancer won't be there, but Ictus will be playing Reich's Music for 18 musicians live
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Jeff Golick:

Hi hi hi and happy born day, @mayuko.
Avatar 1:40pm fred:

@coel: Sure, but that's not the point. The point is that I'll have to find another ticket for myself so that I can see both
Avatar 1:40pm Mayuko:

Thanks Gary!! Hellos & thank you, Jeff G!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm coelacanth∅:

hey Jeff!

fred, yes of course
Avatar 1:41pm david w:

Birthday best from me too! Yay, Mayuko!
  1:42pm Rickwaukee:

Happy Birthday, Mayuko. The inverted piano reminds me of being a kid lying on the floor and imagining the ceiling was now the floor and in my mind I walked around on it but if I went out a door I would fall into the sky.
Avatar 1:42pm Mayuko:

I think what fred really has to find is his doppelganger or triplegangers to see all those shows so that he can stay home rest and listen to FMU.
Avatar 1:43pm Mayuko:

aw thank you david w!!!
  1:43pm mzzm:

tuned in late. was the "Bookseller Atom" snapshot for real??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm listener james from westwood:

Mary Lattimore!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm Jeff Golick:

This Mary Lattimore album is lovely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm coelacanth∅:

do we remember what our doppelgangers do? that sounds like a good deal!
Avatar 1:46pm Mayuko:

@Rickwaukee I used to do similar thing! I walked around looking down into a small mirror in my hand, pointing at the ceiling so that I can feel like that's where I was walking instead of the floor. if that makes any sense. (and thanks re bday wishes!)
Avatar 1:48pm fred:

I don't see that many shows anymore, actually. I don't have a smartphone so I don't listen to WFMU when commuting, but that's when I listen to the premiums. The main hurdle to my listening these days is that I can't listen much at work. Somehow I'm supposed to listen to what the software I working out is doing
  1:48pm mzzm:

frozen banana & yogurt at it again. testing my stomach tolerance.
Avatar 1:49pm Mayuko:

@zzm I totally thought it was photoshopped at first! But there are several photos, including one credited to Jack Bloomfield in 1948... etc etc.
  1:50pm mzzm:

  1:51pm Rickwaukee:

@Mayuko: Yow! Is this a common kid thing or thing for uncommon kids? ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm listener james from westwood:

Aw, man, I got spoiled by that 3-hour fill-in Monday. Glad to have been here for these two!
Avatar 1:54pm fred:

"Bonjour chez vous" was the French translation of the greeting phrase in The Prisoner, though I doubt that was the reference
Avatar 1:55pm northguineahills:

Thanks for the soundtrack to cleaning my kitchen!
Avatar 1:57pm david w:

Brilliant, as always. Thank you!
