Howdy! Great to hear some early ECM.

For you ECM fans, Ricardo Villalobos was granted access to their vaults and did an amazing remix album. Sort of like Eno hits Spiritual/Euro jazz ambience. I recommend it....
  9:12am
Kudubundu:

ECM anytime please. Listening in the UK. Hot enough for this kind of music!
  9:14am

Gotta check out that Villalobos mix, sounds incredible.

Since you all said you were all good with ECM here's a classic for you

Is ECM controversial? Why?

Thank you. Bliss. One of my all time favourites.

I have E. Weber's "Yellow Fields" album from '75 -wonderful. // Karlward: Not sure; some jazzbos only like jazz from 1917 to about 1960 then dislike all the stuff from free jazz to more spiritual stuff. Then they pick up again with Marsalis round '85. Some just don't like the association with '60s/'70s longhairs or what they call new agey feel. May be more to it, don't know...

Yeah, I think some purists think the ECM sound, at least post-73, is cheese-tastic, but I love it. Bring on the gated reverb, I say!!
Avatar 9:44am
Lixiviated Life:

Always a place in my heart for Return To Forever, Weather Report, John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra.
Avatar 9:46am
TDK60:

Cheese is in the taste-buds of the cheese taster. Many ECM albums have actually helped me stretch out mentally -free therapy! well, for the price of an LP. (I love older jazz too -Count Basie.) But I did come of age in the '60s-'70s, so..

Pat Metheny's Zero Tolerance for Silence was quite amazing, IMO.
Avatar 10:01am
northguineahills:

Pat Metheny sometimes gets my lactose intolerance in a knot, but he's done some top stuff as well, not just realizing Steve Reich's "Electric Counterpoint".
Avatar 10:02am
TDK60:

A fave fusion-y album is John Abercrombie's "Timeless" - ECM.
Avatar 10:03am
northguineahills:

@TDK60: I also have the Ebenhard Weber "Yellow Fields" Album on vinyl, not bad. Until I was mayb 28, I only liked jazz from 1962 onwards, it took me awhile to appreciate earlier more "trad jazz".
  10:05am
Jonathan:

I think like most folks I'm very selective with the Metheny. Abercrombie's "Timeless" is an incredible record, definitely like top 5 "fusion" records for me.

Hola NGH: Yes, that E.W. album, to me, is similar to stuff later Soft Machine was doing then.

@NGH, it's Hinky Dinky today, no Doug. So a much bigger contrast than it would be otherwise, and personally I much prefer JW right now.

I'll third that feeling on the dulcimer. Great playing there on that last tune. Indeed- digging this whole set: from Bill Mackay's guitar playing into this veena solo on now.

Say it Prince! Those crazy baldheads' prohibition has lasted way too long.
  10:55am

Yeah that's the political statement of the day. Well, besides the genre/tradition hopping nature of the whole show.
Avatar 10:55am

huh, I'm a baldy, it'd take a months to grow my hair long enough and then fashion them into dreads, and then I'd just be a poseur.
Avatar 10:57am
TDK60:

NGH- it refers to a mental state, name of a Bob Marley tune -off Rastaman Vibration album '76.. There are short hair & bald rastas, not that I'm rasta nor dreadlocked.

NGH: heh-hee / US alcohol prohibition went from 1920 to '33. Pot prohibition has lasted from 1937 til now! with some openings here and there. I've been waiting 50 years! End the "Drug War" = Peace in Mexico, etc!

Beautiful seuge into Rafael Toral there.
  11:22am
Jonathan:

Chris, if you liked that, that kind of mixing is what I do when I typically host a nighttime show. Much more drone/stasis/noise/abstract stuff all rolling together.

And thank you Mick!

ambient drone stuff is usually what I like the most, but I'm usually asleep when DJs play that sort of ilk. good to hear it during waking hours Jonathan.

Rafael Toral, someone who I volunteered to stay on my couch once and got free vinyl in return! (good trade off!)

Huge fan of his ambient records. I still play Wavefield regularly.
  11:32am

I had honestly not heard these ambient records before, more familiar with his more recent experimental/improv work, but have listened to one of them once a day for the past two weeks. Incredible stuff.
