Enjoying this, David.

Hello βrian, she did have quite a voice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm
doctorjazz:

Soprano sax, no? Sounds clarinet-y, but not quite (past 2 tracks)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm
David D:

That is the Romanian taragot as performed by Dumitru Fărcaş, who just passed away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm
Stanley:

Hi David and friends. I'm looking forward to returning to Lisbon at the end of the month. We're staying in Mouraria, the original Fado quarter. Last time we were there, we enjoyed an impromptu performance. A guy playing the Portuguese guitarra, where we were having a drink, serenaded a woman below her balcony and eventually she came to the window and sang. She was a famous retired Fadista and was in her dressing gown. It was wonderful.

Mark Hurst:

Hey I'm here, too! Great show today, David. Hi from NYC

Dean:

I read Fanfare, a bimonthly "magazine" ("for serious record collectors") of ~600 pages with narrow margins of reviews of classical music recordings, new and old. Not an issue goes by where there isn't at least one reference to Leipzig, for perhaps obvious reasons. I inevitably think of Continental Subway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm
David D:

Stanley: That sounds fantastic - I really need to get to Portugal someday myself. But I guess there are no guarantees for a performance like that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm
David D:

And hello and thanks, Mark!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm
David D:

And Dean! (Thanks for thinking of this small bit of Leipzig.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm
Mark Hurst:

@Dean they should put it on the road signs as you enter the city... "Welcome to Leipzig, home of Continental Subway" (though in German)
  4:51pm
Dean:

"...home of Continental Subway and various other musical byways."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm
David D:

Hehe - that would confuse quite a few people, to be sure.
  4:58pm
Dean:

I missed the Fărcaş tracks with taragot. I assume this is the same as the taragota, a favorite instrument (not a sax, not a clarinet) of Brötzmann.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm
David D:

Dean: Yes indeed, also known as the tárogató and other variants.

Oh thanks, NGH, glad you like it! And sorry to hear about your trouble and the insurance situation over there. I hope they find a way to help at least.

w/ this set's theme, I have a hankering for Björk Gudmundsdottir.
  5:16pm
Dean:

And now I've just learned about the Hryts sequence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm
David D:

Dean: Yes, I tried to delve into that a bit before but couldn't find too many clear examples.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm
David D:

It does remind me of at least one other song from the region, though. Maybe I'll play an odd version of that.
  5:24pm
Dean:

Will have to explore the works Soroker claims Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart, Boccherini, and Brahms assimilated the "turn": https://tinyurl.com/ybyrppzx (esp. p. 14).
  5:25pm
Dean:

^works in which Soroker claims
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm

Yes, I made a brief attempt at doing just that, but didn't quite get there.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm

How about something Japonais?
Avatar 5:52pm

Kodō, not to be confused w/ Hyperdub Recs Kode9. he does a great remix of Hayasaka's theme of Kurisawa's "7 Samurai".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm

Thanks David. I'm heading to find my couchette.

Parq:

Time for me to get my hearing checked I thought at first that you said that "the thing that rainbows come out of" was how you defined "prison". Let that sink in, as the kids say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm
David D:

Yes, Parq, I did a terrible job at clarifying what a prism is to avoid that very problem. In German there is a tongue-in-cheek word for making things worse when trying to make them better, "verschlimmbessern".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm
doctorjazz:

Listening on my ride home, really liked the 3MA (and Qntal is pretty intense )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm
David D:

Yes, I guess this is the intense part of the show...

My neighbor went to school with Elliott Sharp in Buffalo. She and he were good friends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm

Nice, did she study music as well?

She's an architect. But she is an amateur singer, too.
