Some of the earlier selections put me in mind of Fiddler...and I was playing the Sunrise, Sunset melody half-assedly on one string of the guitar. I like lyricist Sheldon Harnick's story of the first times letting people hear Sunrise, Sunset - played for Jerrry bock's wife and then Sheldon's sister -- and they cried.

Not quite the same as in the original English.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm

People should use UTC more often. As a person who had to deal with time issues in programming, "what time is it" is a very non trivial question!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm
David D:

Henry: Yes, I heard or read something about the struggle programmers often have with time differences, with all the exceptions and exceptions to exceptions.
Avatar 5:53pm
northguineahills:

I've always proposed using UTC. relative time will become meaningless once people get used to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm
David D:

That could only work if everyone went along with it, of course. A tough sell, I'm sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm
Sem:

Lurked and loved what you've played thus far. Thank you, and good night, David, and Subway denizens.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm
David D:

Thanks, Sem, have a good night!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm
Webhamster Henry:

First you'd just use UTC, especially when scheduling international streaming events (like Continental Subway)... this would both be accurate and tell people it's an inter-temporal event! People can just ask their digital assistants to schedule it for them or translate the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:02pm
David D:

True, smartphones, computers, and the like could all just show us the current UTC. It would surely work very well in a rational world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm
David D:

But what do I know? I can't even get one of the computers in the main radio room to shut off. It keeps rebooting itself.
  6:06pm
Dean:

We should abandon the fiction of time as a cycle altogether, just start enumerating hours from now until doomsday. If we started today, then 43812 o'clock would be what we now refer to as tomorrow five years hence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm
David D:

Dean: Or introduce the 1000-minute day, as some have proposed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm
Webhamster Henry:

People at the South Pole could get to choose their own timezones. (I think they go with New Zealand, where a lot of the supply planes come from).
A revolving door there would cross the international date line several times a minute: instant time machine.

Wikipedia says the french Revolutionary calendar "It was used in government records in France and other areas under French rule, including Belgium, Luxembourg, and parts of the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Malta and Italy."

Had a Vonnegut immersion when I was 15. Started with Slaughterhouse Five, then about five others in high school on my own and in class reading. Only a couple after that, though.
In a local park with someone much younger during a theater perfomance last summer, we saw a big asterisk spray-painted simply and roughly on the side of a large concrete pipe waiting to be installed in the ground, and then realized we'd both had the identical thought: the simple rendering looked like Vonnegut's depiction of the ol' human A-hole in his drawings for Breakfast of Champions.

Greetings Jeff! Yes, BoC was a movie that got terrible reviews, but which Kuba and I both seem to think was okay.

Jeff:

Just saw the trailer...looks more intriguing than I found the book. May be better suited to the medium than to print.

@βrian: SUper duper happy bday! Also my wife's bday, and half of her design team lost their jobs today (including her). Four years ago she got laid off a week before her bday. (and we just renewed our Brooklyn lease two weeks ago)

Oh, no. Vonnegut was most certainly best manifested via print. Or, at least, ink on paper.

I've heard OF Kullak, just not his music, Brandts-Buys is new to me, and I'm a sucker for anything pipe organy.

Vonnegut: a bunch of his short stories were turned in to the PBS film "Between Time and Timbuctu", which is great. Happy Birthday, Wanda June and Mother Night are also out there as films.

But the time is right to make The Sirens of Titan - please cast Jeremy Irons as Winston Niles Rumfoord.

Yes, re Reich's name. I only discovered that after years of mispronouncing it.

melinda:

I never had a Vonnegut immersion. But I did fall for a Vonnegut fake-out in college. Someone wrote in chalk on the sidewalks of the Pentacrest (U of Iowa's equivalent a quad) that Vonnegut would be speaking there at a later date. After a large crowd had gathered the prankster responsible announced from the steps of the old capitol building that we were all suckers and ran off. I saved the campus newspaper photo of the assembled crowd.

Wait what is the correct pronunciation? I missed it.

Reich?

Like Robert Reich.

His parents probably pronounced it the anglified way.
