I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm maestroso:

Hello Mayuko! Nice to hear your show again. About to leave for my favourite record store, will be listening in the car.
Avatar 12:11pm Mayuko:

Let me present this new scale for evaluating music today:

<<LWC Levels>>

(stands for louis wain cats)

LWC Level-1

LWC Level-2

LWC Level-3

LWC Level-4

LWC Level-5

LWC Level-6

"I think this Caretaker's brandnew release is at LWC level 5."

Also, belated welcome, james!!! and Jake! Was good to see you yesterday! & hello maestroso! Glad to have you here!
  12:14pm JakeGould:

Good to see you too!
Avatar 12:15pm Mayuko:

(Sorry that it's not very much of a kind of music to listen to in a car)
  12:17pm listener james from westwood:

My car, it would fit perfectly.
Avatar 12:18pm Mayuko:

@rbrt AND you like that Caretaker track I rated as cat level 3! So my rating is accurate so far!
  12:20pm rbrt:

lol true!

Hello, Mayuko! Hello vertical listeners!
Avatar 12:24pm Mayuko:

Hellos, Rich in Washington! Thank you for tuning in!
  12:25pm rbrt:

Are there any funhouses still around? I used to be obsessed with them as a kid
Avatar 12:27pm Mayuko:

@rbrt Not sure about the US but I have a feeling there's still one that's super old in Tokyo, hopefully I'll find out soon! It sure is super fascinating.
  12:28pm rbrt:

@Mayuko you're going to Tokyo!
Avatar 12:28pm Mayuko:

... I have a feeling that many of my listenerds might be being horizontal, despite the show name.
Avatar 12:29pm Mayuko:

@rbrt Yes for the first time in 8 years, it's CRAZY.
  12:30pm rbrt:

@Mayuko take us with you! lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm Dropof Goldensun:

I would love to be horizontal listening to this but that might be a problem at work.
  12:32pm rbrt:

I'm giving "strong acid button" a level 4 cat
  12:32pm rbrt:

also this would make a great wakeup alarm
Avatar 12:33pm Mayuko:

@rbrt oh yeah! thought the same!
  12:34pm rbrt:

it kind of sounds like electronic birds to me lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm paul b:

I'm surprised no one beat me to this, but I feel I have to do it.
From "the Shining":
Jack Torrance: Mr. Grady, you were the caretaker here.

Delbert Grady: I'm sorry to differ with you sir, but you are the caretaker. You've always been the caretaker. I should know sir. I've always been here.
Avatar 12:34pm Mayuko:

@rbrt glad I have you to play this game with haha!!!!

  12:42pm rw:

Good morning! So, the more baroque the higher the level? What's LWC?
Avatar 12:43pm Mayuko:

@paul b The Caretaker is indeed a project started being inspired by The Shining, apparently. I didn't know that.
  12:44pm rw:

New t-shirts! Which one looks best on me?
Avatar 12:44pm Mayuko:

Hey Jason! & Rickwaukee! Thanks for tuning in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Rich in Washington:

It's nine am in my part of the globe when this show comes on, so I am not quite vertical, sort of diagonal, until I've had four or five cups of coffee.
  12:45pm rbrt:

I think 4 or 5 cups of coffee could possibly kill me
Avatar 12:45pm Mayuko:

@rw I'm not always sure what I am talking about myself, but I think it's the level of structure/abstraction of a track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Rich in Washington:

The older I get, the more I am unable sleep in. Even on a Saturday. Not sure why. I think it's a conspiracy to get me to take naps, something I've resisted since infancy.
Avatar 12:46pm Mayuko:

@Rich what rbrt said!
  12:46pm rbrt:

@rich maybe it's all the coffee ?? LOL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Dropof Goldensun:

I just got a Nespresso machine and I've been overdosing lately. I don't mind but people around me sure do!
  12:49pm Joseph Bolstad:

Hello Mayuko and Listenerds. Currently in kind of a diagonal position myself. This is good music for brewing coffee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Rich in Washington:

If I stopped drinking coffee I think I would implode like a failing star. It wouldn't be pretty.
  12:50pm rbrt:

I was at a level 3 with "Second Skin" but I am increasing my cat to level 4

Good afternoon Mayuko and listeners
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Rich in Washington:

I hope to achieve level five today.
  12:52pm rbrt:

hiya fred
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Rich in Washington:

Level three would be fine, too. I am babysitting the grandchild today. Mustn't be too intense, but I require the energy.
  12:56pm rbrt:

lol yes I enjoy the scale
  12:58pm melinda:

Hi all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Dropof Goldensun:

I love the idea of the scale! Sorry I haven't been doing any rating. I can't wait to hear a LWC Level -6.
  12:58pm rw:

LWC-5 beats 5 stars every time.
  12:59pm rw:

Careful, Mayuko, you're approaching LWC-5 or 6 here.
Avatar 1:00pm fred:

Bryce would need his own level, but Kenzo plays all levels at once
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Dropof Goldensun:

Mayuko, you are truly living up to the name Listenerd!
Avatar 1:03pm fred:

"Chanson Triste" means "Sad Song"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm melinda:

I like the fun house photo
Avatar 1:06pm Jason Elbogen:

'Sistren'!!! I like that.
Avatar 1:07pm fred:

Hey Jason!!! How are you doing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, Mayuko. Speaking of fiill-ins, Zoe is on for Joel at midnight tonight. I know some folks miss her show already (me included).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Rich in Washington:

I forgot that that progressive series of cat images were related to schizophrenia. I mistakenly remembered that it was related to LSD use. Shows you where my mind's at.
Avatar 1:08pm Jason Elbogen:

Hey, Fred, I'm good. How are you feeling? Last I remember you had surgery, but that was probably a whole back now...
  1:13pm Rickwaukee:

*You're* a needle teeth! LWC-2
Avatar 1:14pm fred:

Yeah, that was almost two years ago. I missed the first half of the show because I was at a Yulduz Turdieva concert (she's a great Uzbek singer). At the end of the show a dancer showed up and after her routine threw hats into the audience and one landed on me. So I'm now the proud owner of a cheap fake Uzbek square hat
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm melinda:

I had a hypnogogic light session yesterday. The images I saw were mostly geometrical, probably LWC level 3.
Avatar 1:16pm Mayuko:

@Rickwaukee level 2, you think? I was debating if it's 2 or 3. Maybe I'll change it to 2.
Avatar 1:17pm Mayuko:

Level 2 intense background but still pretty cat.
Avatar 1:17pm Sem:

Hello, Mayuko, those playing vertigo-go-go, those not playing, and all.
  1:18pm rbrt:

I can't wait to hear the singles you dig up in Japan
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Dropof Goldensun:

Mayuko, I'm starting to lean a little toward LWC-3.
Avatar 1:19pm fred:

@Jason: And I'm happy to report I'll see Ulzhan Baybusinova tomorrow (dombra player and great singer from Kazakhstan)
Avatar 1:20pm fred:

Level 4 sounds right for that Alan Morse Davies track (I clicky-starred it anyway, I'm old school)
Avatar 1:20pm Mayuko:

Hallos Joseph B! Thanks for tuning in & happy brewing!
Avatar 1:21pm Mayuko:

Hi Melinda! Hola my radio family fred!
Avatar 1:23pm Mayuko:

@Rich Babies seem to have a pretty abstract world perception though, so maybe level 5-6 would be good for them?
  1:24pm northguineahills:

Spent the last 6 hours repairing my computer. Finally got a browser to come up, now waiting to see if it loads. At least my phone works.
  1:24pm rbrt:

I wish there was some way to remember what you saw as a baby...maybe
Avatar 1:24pm Mayuko:

@Dropo I'm saving the level 6 for now since the caretakers still have something coming up in near future. Level 6 must be very intense, or maybe something else entirely?
Avatar 1:25pm Mayuko:

@rw I play George Michael from time to time so I shouldn't be getting the level 5 badge!
Avatar 1:26pm Mayuko:

@fred @1:00 but it's not about being "weird" necessarily, it's just the level of destruction of the context in music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Friday, Oct. 12, Sheila is doing an all-cats show. This must be the feline time of year.
Avatar 1:27pm fred:

I think Daniel Menche must have a few level-6 things. I remember when Bryce played Jugularis on his show and I missed a show because I just couldn't stop listening
Avatar 1:27pm Mayuko:

@Jason I stole "Sistren" from Uncle Michael's email!

Welcome, Ken!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Dropof Goldensun:

@Mayuko You might be on to something there with "something else entirely." Remember, at level 6 we lose the cat altogether. Losing the music completely could be interpreted many ways I'm sure. I'm glad you're saving it because I think it does require some thought.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Dropof Goldensun:

@rbrt Remembering what we saw as a baby would be so amazing!
  1:29pm rbrt:

see now I would give this Alan davies song a level 4 because I like it, but it would be a level one because it's not so abstract?
  1:30pm rw:

Oh, I was talking about the last mic break. I'd give it a solid LWC-4.5
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm Dropof Goldensun:

Wait! Are we allowed to use decimal places? hahaha
Avatar 1:31pm Mayuko:

@melinda whoa! what is hypnogogic light session?!?!?!
Avatar 1:32pm Mayuko:

Hey Sem, welcome on board!!
  1:33pm Joe:

Whoops, autofill snuck in my full name last time. Sala seems like a 2 or 3 to me.
Avatar 1:35pm fred:

Mayuko, I saw Terrine again this week, and I think you'd like what she's doing these days. Part noise, part techno, with quick switches from quite danceable to definitely not (sorry for the many links, and her set yesterday had more of a beat at times)
Avatar 1:40pm Mayuko:

@Dropof YES EXACTLY! I think the cat might be lost altogether indeed at level 6 like you said!
Avatar 1:43pm Mayuko:

@rw OK that's funny but also I better be comprehensive at least when I am talking to people. I should always get that rating from listenerds here every week.
"This week Mayuko somewhat made sense. LWC level 3"
  1:43pm rw:

I just looked up hypnogogic light session. I think I've done something similar. James Turrell has made dome shaped structures lit with pulsing colored light that creates hallucinatory images in your mind. I've heard of people having seizures in them but if you're not worried about that I'd recommend the experience if you ever have a chance. I'm not good at rating stuff but I'd say LWC-4 or so.
Avatar 1:44pm fred:

I remember Donna Summer (the WFMU one) had pretty nice tracks disassembling well-known tunes. Does that count?
Avatar 1:44pm Mayuko:

@rbrt re Alan davies Yeah maybe you're right! It's not abstract as much as its sound texture feels. Maybe I should put it down to at least level 3.
  1:46pm rbrt:

I will never listen to music again wihtout applying level cats lol
  1:47pm rw:

And, I probably shouldn't say this publicly but I don't really think of those Turrell works as particularly interesting artworks. I do like his simpler works but when they get too gimmicky they lose their appeal to me. As a cool experience those immersive pulsing light works are pretty great though.
Avatar 1:47pm Mayuko:

@Joe Ok yeah I agree, rated 2.
Avatar 1:48pm Mayuko:

@fred I'll check out Terrine! How would you rate them in LWC level?
  1:48pm Barnaby:

Hi Mayuko, quickly say hi. Listening a lot but less commenting
Avatar 1:51pm fred:

@Mayuko: I don't have a grasp of the scale, but having people dance to noise (even for a short time) probably calls for a weird cat
  1:54pm Rickwaukee:

@Mayuko, I wish you a wonderful trip. I am continually amazed how short a time you've been in the USA - but it must seem like a lifetime since you've been home. Thanks for another fine show of great Felines. Will miss you.
Avatar 1:55pm Mayuko:

@rw Think I'd be afraid of anything hypnogogic, though I never had seizures, feel like my senses are already screwed a bit and don't wanna mess with it much. Same reason I don't want to take drugs, even like marijuana that's very popular around here.
Avatar 1:55pm Mayuko:

Hi Barnaby! Glad to know you're listening!!!
Avatar 1:56pm Mayuko:

@fred yeah that sounds a bit tough. I think I have to think how I rate/understand techno in this LWC cat spectrum in the first place.
  1:57pm rbrt:

yeah I don't think I need any mind altering devices or subtances lol
Avatar 1:58pm Mayuko:

Aw thank you Rickwaukee! I will miss you all and this hours of listening to music together!! Can't wait to come back to NYC already.
  1:58pm rbrt:

Also, I said I'd post a link to our newsletter and totally carried away. Here it is
Avatar 2:00pm fred:

@Mayuko: you said it's been a while, but didn't you go to Iwate a couple of years ago?
Avatar 2:00pm Mayuko:

@fred that show was a couple of years ago already though! It was a bit before I left Japan that I had been to Iwate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Dropof Goldensun:

Great show today Mayuko! I hope everyone has at least a LWC Level 4 or 5 week!
  2:07pm Rickwaukee:

Everything in moderation - including schizophrenia kitties
  2:09pm rw:

Thank you Mayuko! Have a great time in Japan! I'm a little jealous. Have a super Saturday everyone whatever your LWC level!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Dropof Goldensun:

@Mayuko The other great thing about your LWC scale is that it IS open to interpretation. Everyone's perception varies from individual to individual AND our own perception can vary depending on our mood, surroundings, etc.
Avatar 2:11pm fred:

Thanks Mayuko, I'm sure you'll bring back great stuff from Okinawa, can't wait to hear it
  2:11pm rbrt:

lol I'm all about the levels
  2:14pm rbrt:

Have a good trip Mayuko!
  2:14pm rbrt:

please find the funhouse in Tokyo, thanks :)))
  2:15pm Joe:

Thanks for the music and have a great trip!
Avatar 2:17pm Mayuko:

@Dropof yes! there is room for different interpretation, and I like that the conversation can be specific how we see/hear it differently. specificity is constructive!
Avatar 2:17pm Mayuko:

Thanks again everyone for listening! Can't wait to come back! Have beautiful 2 weeks!!!
