In since the git-go but been driving—can confirm splendiferous day up in Nyack/Piermont! Wish we could CTRL-C and paste this day across October!!
  9:09am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks for the Rush delivery, Jeff! We’re headed home, on I-84 West through Connecticut, after a sweet visit with the fredhperson.

@Stanley! You cool cat...

@ljfw: Ten and two, listener james - hands on that wheel. Great to have you shotgun.

@Doug: don't get fresh with me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Jeff Golick:

This remarkable Anthony Davis recording arrives via the incomparable blog, Inconstant Sol: inconstantsol.blogspot.com...
Avatar 9:18am glenn:

Rush??? blecccchhhhhh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Jeff Golick:

I thought a Canadian can't hold that opinion, @glenn.

Hi, @glenn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Jeff Golick:

you know how 70% of the U.S. hates Trump? We're the same with Rush.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Jeff Golick:

Ha. Just wait until 2112.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Andrew Waterloo:

Rush is only truly loved by 17 year old boys and men who aren't embarrassed by jazz funk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Jeff Golick:

Heya, @Andrew Waterloo. No joke, I was just this week trying to think of good premium CD themes, and one of them was...jazz funk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Andrew Waterloo:

I'm sure you could redeem the genre Jeff. But, I'm sure Bolo will still fly into an uncontrolled rage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Jeff Golick:

That bear knows what's up.
Avatar 9:30am duke:

Good morning all and sundry
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Jeff Golick:

@duke! Here comes the sun(dry)...
  9:31am JtotheK:

Hi Jeff, hi everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Jeff Golick:

(I can't pun like Doug does; why do I even try?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Jeff Golick:

Greetings, @JtotheK!
Avatar 9:32am glenn:

sundried tomatoes.
  9:34am Listener Gregory:

Hi, Jeff. Is it ok to ask, "Whatever happened to Anthony Davis?" He was so hot in the last century and got a bunch of classical commissions too. Then I stopped hearing about him and it's been maybe 20 years. Is it me or him?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Jeff Golick:

Hi, @Listener Gregory! It's a fair question. I believe he turned to academia for much of those 20 years. In 2011, the d:O blog had this post re Anthony Davis and some of his (then-)new music: destination-out.com...
  9:41am Listener Gregory:

Academia! Feh!
Avatar 9:41am Sem:

Good morning, Jeff, and hello to the OUT crowd across this wide wide world, and casual listeners who have stumbled their way through the stream to this oasis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Jeff Golick:

@Sem: good morning to you!
Avatar 9:43am northguineahills:

Got here somehow....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Jeff Golick:

@LG: this Davis recording from 2014 is worthwhile: www.discogs.com...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Jeff Golick:

@northguineahills! You made it.

@Scraps! welcome welcome!
  9:53am Doug Schulkind:

I had a copy of 2112 signed by all the members of Rush. In high school, my best friend won a contest on the radio that won him a complete set of all their LPs, a limo to a concert in Baltimore, and a backstage pass. He brought my copy of 2112 and got it signed.
Avatar 9:57am glenn:

i like otis rush. and tom rush.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Andrew Waterloo:

It's hard enough that I like Rush, but even harder when I have to admit that I'd rather listen to Power Windows than 2112
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Andrew Waterloo:

I'm off to test my WFMU record bag at a record show
  10:01am Listener Gregory:

I went to the blog Jeff linked to, but I don't see where you can download the concert. Can someone less elderly help me?
  10:02am Doug Schulkind:

As an 18-year-old snotnose freshman, I used to call the campus radio station and request Rush, while imploring the DJ to tell the audience pay particular attention to the drum solo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Jeff Golick:

Bye, @Andrew! Happy shopping.
  10:05am Listener Gregory:

Thanks, Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Jeff Golick:

@Doug:....and that man became a DJ.

You're not the one driving, right?
Avatar 10:05am glenn:

and i like that rush are proud canadians, and really good musicians. i just hate all their music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am doctorjazz:

Hi all, this is indeed lovely. Just got here and already 2 albums in deck to buy, sheesh!
Going to take the show on the Ozzie walk in a bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am doctorjazz:

I want to go to the restaurant that had this single on their jukebox.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Jeff Golick:

Me, too, @doctorjazz. Me, too. Hi there! Lovely day for a dog walk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Jeff Golick:

"Spirit Complex" is: Elliot Kavee, Francis Wong, George Lewis, Kash Killion, & Vijay Iyer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am doctorjazz:

Yeah, hopefully get out to bike after that .. My wife hasn't been well for a while, often need to to more for her and around the house...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am doctorjazz:

Quite a band!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am doctorjazz:

you had a discussion about "elders* that are still around .. George Lewis would qualify

Part of this sounds like a David Murray ballad at the end.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Jeff Golick:

Oh, yeah. George Lewis would be a great feature. So much varied stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Jeff Golick:

(@doc: sorry to hear that your wife isn't feeling well.)
  10:35am Doug Schulkind:

Not the one driving!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am doctorjazz:

Thanks .. She's had a rough month .. Concussion, then pneumonia, and she can't seem to shake it...
Avatar 10:39am northguineahills:

Loved that Anthony Davis Sextet!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Jeff Golick:

So glad, @ngh; I was instantly taken with it, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Jeff Golick:

@doc: ugh. That sucks.
Avatar 10:45am northguineahills:

ohh, new William Parker!

hope she mends quickly, doctorjazz!
  10:46am Listener Gregory:

That was a great set, but the tone seems more introspective than is consistent with our excellent weather in the NYC area.
  10:48am Dean:

William Parker is half a year older than George Lewis. Neither is *that* old (he remarks, noting their marginal relative seniority over himself...).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Jeff Golick:

@Dean! Hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Jeff Golick:

@LG: 'tis true. Maybe will get closer to the weather mood this set.
  10:54am JtotheK:

Wow, this is great! Also great ‘Purple Haze’ is by Johnny Jones and the King Casuals on Brunswick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Bouncy! Mixes well with The Flying Lizards.
Avatar 10:58am Brian in UK:

Hello Jeff and folks.
That's my kinda gal with a Stihl chainsaw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Jeff Golick:

@Granny Spicy Tuna! I hear that!

@Brian in UK: she means business. Hi, hi.
  11:00am Melvin:

Someone ask for me?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Jeff Golick:

The Belles are lookin' for you, man.
  11:14am Doug Schulkind:

Endless Sommer. Please?
  11:19am Listener Gregory:

The endless sunshine has had its effect, and I must go out to absorb it. Will check out the end of show later. Thanks, Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Jeff Golick:

I'll try, Doug, but Mike Love will likely have a problem with it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Jeff Golick:

Thanks for being here, @LG, and enjoy the sunshine!
  11:21am Dean:

Been listening lately to Steve Lacy's and related catalogs, e.g., Pandelis Karayorgis's live Whammies records with Han Bennink. So good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Jeff Golick:

Yes, those Whammies discs are great!
Avatar 11:24am Sem:

Been listening right along, chiming in to say thanks for this Fairport piece in particular, but also for the whole show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Stanley:

Hi Sem. Me too!
Avatar 11:30am duke:

I really like Fairport's version of Percy's Song.
  11:31am Dean:

Brandon Ross? Love his stuff with Threadgill.
Avatar 11:33am Sem:

Hello, Stanley. Februry travel plans are firming up. Seems like a fortnight in Portugal---pretty likely the Azores, and then ~ a week there in Oxfordshire.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @Sem. So glad you've been here. (You, too, @Stanley!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Jeff Golick:

@duke: Hiya. You and me both.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am doctorjazz:

Hey Dean, you still looking for the Miles Plugged Nickel set? I knew I had it somewhere, found it. Can send it if you want it, send me an email if you do.
  11:36am Doug Schulkind:

This sounds so damn good.
  11:39am Dean:

What a coincidence, doctorjazz! I was at Down Home Records yesterday, where I spied several used Miles box sets on the shelves behind the counter. Inquired about Plugged Nickel, but no. Yes, please! I'm not registered, so I can't contact you via WFMU. I'm okay with giving my email here:

deancrowan at yahoo

Quite a memory you have! Thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Jeff Golick:

One wonders how the crowd at Newport '69 hung with this jam.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am doctorjazz:

I'll rip and send them later, out to bike Watchung Reservation in a few. If anyone else is interested, let me know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Jeff Golick:

Stockhausen in the haus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Holy wow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Jeff Golick:

You said it, @GST.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am doctorjazz:

This is great (wife's not too happy, though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Avatar 11:54am Sem:

Man, that was somthing else again. Wonderful.
Avatar 12:03pm duke:

Thanks Jeff. Great Miles set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @duke! @Sem, yeah!

Here's the sign-up link for the Give the Drummer Radio [GTDR] daily email: tinyletter.com...
  11:16am Listener Gregory:

Caught the end of the show a few days later. Would just like to offer the information that if I knew that "He was a big freak" was going to be written on my headstone, I would die happy.
