	♥ 9:16pm Franco Twinkie: I saw The Doors opening for Frank Zappa at the Hollywood Bowl in 1972. I't was their last show. Jim was already dead, but Ray said "I know you're out their Jimbo!" We really cracked up. Half the audience looked like Jim Morrison.

Then punk happened, which was fun and exiting, but all of a sudden certain people were taking a Pol Pot back to year zero attitude, and trying to pretend all this music never happened. It was weird times for sure.

	9:52pm Dean: I kinda have this feeling that the punk-was-a-reaction-to-prog (fusion, etc.) was made up by, naturally, stupid media people. I remember mid- to late-'70s hanging with people into the Dolls, Iggy, Ramones, and Yes, Pink Floyd, Le Orme, Guru Guru...

	9:58pm Dean: @chresti: Really? I was at the Masque quite a bit. I don't recall anything of the sort. One of the qualities of the LA punk scene, to my mind, was its inclusiveness (which might simply have been a function of its I-dont'-give-a-shit-ness).

	10:02pm TDK60: I was a longhair but also later got into punk/ noowave/ postpunk/ etc. But I still liked older stuff.

	♥ 10:02pm Franco Twinkie: Dean, It all depends on what group you happened to be in the orbit of. Some were smart and funny, others self important talentless creeps.
	10:05pm Dean: Much like America, Franco. Right, coelacanth, I felt no significant pressure to get in line, but for me that was because I didn't sense a strong prescription to do so. My group was Flipside, for whom I worked during the early days. Al, X-8, Pooch, etc., those guys were great.
	♥ 10:05pm coelacanth∅: i was in a punk band and i thought the 2 guitarists, who had both grown their hair very long after meeting already long-haired me 2 years earlier, were pathetically conformist to get crew cuts as they did.
	10:08pm TDK60: I remember when '80s Calif. hardcore punk bands like Black Flag or M.D.C. grew their hair just to mess with a perceived punk conformity in hair/dress.
	♥ 10:09pm Franco Twinkie: Dean, the Jerry reference was to Jerry Lewis. It started with Geza X using Jerry Lewis as a standard of self debasement. If you could act like Jerry in public, you passed the test.
	10:10pm Dean: That's marvelous, Franco. So many references on the Masque walls to Jerry. I'm assuming we passed the test, because the first time we played there Brendan introduced as "the ultimate in embarrassment rock."
	10:11pm TDK60: But it was also musical. The Minutemen took shit for not sounding "punk." They replied: it is our punk.

	♥ 10:16pm coelacanth∅: TDK right, and long before that (in the context of punk) ramones had long hair, and their music sounded like raw beach boys music. only their irreverent image and silly lyrics made them "punk".
	10:17pm Dean: My experience of the punk scene in LA focuses (almost exclusively) on those couple of years in the late '70s, so I can understand why The Minutemen might have been criticized for riding the wave. Punk was a scene, not so much a genre (hence The Screamers, who are not easy to assign to a category at all, or The Quick, who happened to emerge at the same time). For me, punk was those two or three short years, nothing more.
	10:19pm Dean: I say "almost exclusively" because, goddamn, Claw Hammer were amazing and would have fit perfectly into LA punk.
	♥ 10:21pm coelacanth∅: in nj, at least, there was a wealth of punk bands - and a scene- for a few years into the 80s, even after all the famous punk bands had turned to shit, died or disbanded.

	♥ 10:23pm Franco Twinkie: For me, the best year in punk was 1977 because a lot of people were still trying to figure out what it was, musically and other wise. Backwards pants? Why not! Raw liver taped to your head? Front of the line mister!

	♥ 10:29pm coelacanth∅: i only tuned in to punk around the winter of 1978, and i might consider that my favorite year for "punk &/or new wave" music; though some great punk music goes back several years before that.
	10:34pm Dean: Spring '76 for me. Heard about the Pistols, went to London later that year. I was hooked.
	♥ 10:38pm Franco Twinkie: When I saw The Patti Smith Group in early '76 it was a wake up call that something was up. But I had no idea that I was just seeing the storm front moving in.

Sparks opened, and after their set, Patti was barely a couple songs into hers when a member of our party, having a bad night with his girlfriend, prevailed upon us in his ill temper to LEAVE! Walked out...and into decades of regret. Saw her again briefly at Boston First Night a few years ago. Meh.

	11:23pm still b/p: I left the Boston area in '77 for smaller cities -- and more musically limited media markets -- in midwest and then Texas for school and then work, and missed most of punk shortly after it had started rising. Home again just for summer of 78, I did catch a couple acts and put some Pistols on a mix tape. A couple high school students thought I was younger than what I reported and said they "couldn't believe" my actual age recently. And, yes, it pushed a li'l button of ego, though how good are teenagers at accurate adult age estimates anyway?

	11:26pm Dean: My personal "If only..." story: After one of my bands played the Masque on Santa Monica Blvd., I got a call from either Marc or Stan from Wall of Voodoo. He asked us to open for them at Hong Kong Cafe (or maybe Madame Wong's?). We said yes, but broke up that week. Oh, well.
	♥ 11:27pm coelacanth∅: i had a radical friend who used to rant to the annoyance of many while we listened to old Dylan and doors and Phil Ochs and 'airplane (etc) then in the beginning of 10th grade he moved to branchberg - a very racist, anti-progressive nj town. a few months later he came back to visit - a full-on punk! turned me on to the clash and stiff little fingers and buzzcocks and i don't remember who else but he left the clash album with me.

	11:30pm northguineahills: I have Dylan on the queue in the car. punk, outside of pre-pere ubu bands in Ohio, art punk, I didn't really get into it. That said, in the late 90s-2000s, through my soccer team's bands, I got into hardcore (Thurston and John Zorn also helped).

	11:57pm Dean: Yes, nostalgia is strong. But I did appreciate the vibe, independent of the music, in a way that informs my experience of history. It was a special time. I didn't know The Eyes, but I saw them a couple times at the Masque. They were spectacular, in my opinion far superior to the bands they spawned, X and Go-Go's. (We called our band M, because X is such a cheesy name for a band. To my mind, X portended the decline of LA punk.)

	10:05pm Dean: Much like America, Franco. Right, coelacanth, I felt no significant pressure to get in line, but for me that was because I didn't sense a strong prescription to do so. My group was Flipside, for whom I worked during the early days. Al, X-8, Pooch, etc., those guys were great.

	♥ 10:16pm coelacanth∅: TDK right, and long before that (in the context of punk) ramones had long hair, and their music sounded like raw beach boys music. only their irreverent image and silly lyrics made them "punk".
	10:17pm Dean: My experience of the punk scene in LA focuses (almost exclusively) on those couple of years in the late '70s, so I can understand why The Minutemen might have been criticized for riding the wave. Punk was a scene, not so much a genre (hence The Screamers, who are not easy to assign to a category at all, or The Quick, who happened to emerge at the same time). For me, punk was those two or three short years, nothing more.
	10:19pm Dean: I say "almost exclusively" because, goddamn, Claw Hammer were amazing and would have fit perfectly into LA punk.

	11:23pm still b/p: I left the Boston area in '77 for smaller cities -- and more musically limited media markets -- in midwest and then Texas for school and then work, and missed most of punk shortly after it had started rising. Home again just for summer of 78, I did catch a couple acts and put some Pistols on a mix tape. A couple high school students thought I was younger than what I reported and said they "couldn't believe" my actual age recently. And, yes, it pushed a li'l button of ego, though how good are teenagers at accurate adult age estimates anyway?

	♥ 11:27pm coelacanth∅: i had a radical friend who used to rant to the annoyance of many while we listened to old Dylan and doors and Phil Ochs and 'airplane (etc) then in the beginning of 10th grade he moved to branchberg - a very racist, anti-progressive nj town. a few months later he came back to visit - a full-on punk! turned me on to the clash and stiff little fingers and buzzcocks and i don't remember who else but he left the clash album with me.

	11:57pm Dean: Yes, nostalgia is strong. But I did appreciate the vibe, independent of the music, in a way that informs my experience of history. It was a special time. I didn't know The Eyes, but I saw them a couple times at the Masque. They were spectacular, in my opinion far superior to the bands they spawned, X and Go-Go's. (We called our band M, because X is such a cheesy name for a band. To my mind, X portended the decline of LA punk.)
