@ Rich: the French band Achwghâ Ney Wodei ‎released a cassette that was sealed inside a ceramic figurine -- you have to break the figurine to get at it. I also have cassette that's sewn inside a yarmulke -- I've never opened it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm

a friend distributed his cd in a lunchbag, accompanied by lots of other goodies. if he made cassettes, which i don't know, that would've been the most ungainly packaging i know of. as it is i had to take the cd out to file it with my others, and put the bag with the other stuff in it in a box of basically unrelated stuff.
  12:12pm
Dean:

@ljfw: I've never stayed at a hotel in PDX, though I've considered it. My entire family, four of us, will stay in NE with my sister-in-law's family at their home, which is a pleasure, but a tight fit.

i used to take as much time as needed to preserve packaging when i opened records. a bit obsessive i suppose.
but yeah i'd love to have that car! ...but i'd also HAVE to listen to the tape!
  12:21pm
Dean:

Oddly, I'm mildly obsessive about removing labels from records, e.g., price tags. It's odd, because I appreciate the evidence of provenance a price tag supplies. But I also like a clean cover, and I'm particularly fond of figuring out harmless ways to remove adhesive residue. If I had it all to do over again, I'd get a Ph.D. in adhesives.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm
Rich in Washington:

Was is Merzbow who released either a cassette or CD that was permanently installed in a car's deck, so you had to buy the car? Or am I thinking of someone else. Right now, it's defying my google fu.
  12:23pm
Dean:

Throbbing Gristle released 24 hours of live shows on cassettes in a little briefcase.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm
Rich in Washington:

I have this weird thing about so-called 'hype stickers' on records. I don't like shrinkwrap, so I throw the stickers away with the wrap. I hate them. It's like someone saying 'fuck the designer! Let's hear from the marketing department!'.
Avatar 12:23pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: Yep, that was Merzbow

@ Dean: I'm obsessive about removing price tags. God only knows how many hours of my life I've wasted doing that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm
Rich in Washington:

I've always wanted to own TG's 24 Hours ever since reading about it in Trousers Press Guide To Records as a teenager.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm
Rich in Washington:

I've even thought of going so far as to make a fake one with the digital files and scans I have, simply for my own fetishistic enjoyment.
Avatar 12:25pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: Yep -- I too hate hype stickers. The ones I've seen are usually about the "long-awaited" reissue of something only three people had ever heard.
  12:26pm
Dean:

Well, here's where we differ. I love hype stickers. I more or less meticulously clip them from the shrinkwrap and keep them with the jewel case or cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
Rich in Washington:

I find Ronsonol, Zippo Lighter Fuel or straight up Naptha (the active ingredient of both) works wonders at removing decals. It evaporates away and leaves little evidence to the slipcover.
  12:30pm
Dean:

I first learned about the TG 24 hours box at the Cabaret Voltaire/Young Marble Giants/Monitor show in LA in October 1980. Somebody was showing off a copy of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm
Rich in Washington:

There are a few records where the hype sticker is desirable for some reason and I'll carefully peel them off and affix them to the poly bag I use to replace the shrinkwrap.
I also recently noticed that a lot of records I bought as a teen and young adult are still in their shrinkwrap and have hype stickers still, and even price stickers from my favorite Tower Records store.
As a kid, I knew that any record that had the handwritten 'RECOMMENDED!' by some mystery clerk was a must-buy.

Some hype stickers are informative -- but most are just annoying attempts to browbeat you into buying the thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm
coelacanth∅:

agreed Rich @12.23 it's disrespectful of the thought and possible creativity that went into the album design. and yes spent lots of time carefully removing stickers - occasionally ruining the cover at least as bad as the sticker did! more than once (long ago) i retouched the album cover with colored pencils or pens after the sticker pulled part of it away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm
coelacanth∅:

i've bought more used records than new ones, and assholes at stores ("second coming records" comes to mind) smacked 2" diameter stickers, with super adhesive and 4 perforations across them on all their albums. often 2-3 stickers. never on a shrinkwrap. often in the most obnoxious location they could find on the cover art (like over a person's face)

Hello Tony and hissers! Loving the talk about stickers and price tags! I am with Dean in the love 'em camp for hype stickers; I have a bunch of '80s ones in a notebook somewhere. Avatar 1:12pm

I think they used super glue for those stickers -- plus they were segmented, so just when you thought you were on a roll as far as peeling it off, part of the label would break off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm
coelacanth∅:

i actually did save some hype stickers too (which means i still have them, somewhere) but only after carefully removing them.

Mary i don't know! we (teenagers) listened to that album a billion times and not infrequently i had to carefully slip the blue shrinkwrap off again because someone wanted to see the album art. i vaguely remember it starting to tear. i might've given up, but it's stored away and i don't know.
Avatar 1:27pm

Sounding good! Hmm, I wonder if I still have any of the 90s CD hype stickers that I carefully peeled off the shrink wrap (when possible — sometimes they’d tear) before unwrapping the CD and then tried to save inside the CD booklets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm

i had no problem with stickers on jewel cases. why care? but occasionally there'd be one on a "digipak" (is that right?) and that would piss me off. i know at least of a Nick Cave cd and a ooioo cd that the covers are compromised by stickers or glue.
  1:31pm

(This thread reminds me of a long comment board on one of Bob Brainen's shows during the past year or so. He invited listeners/commenters to help him inventory all albums with die-cut covers.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm

in through the out door had brown paper and the water-sensative inside. i have one that i never wet, but humidity caused it to start being colored anyway.
...there's another though.
i know "some girls" had a "temporary" cover saying "pardon our appearance while we renovate" or something like that. maybe that's what i'm thinking of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm
coelacanth∅:

Dean what do you mean by "die cut" cover? (like through the past, darkly?)
  1:42pm
Dean:

That's one simple example, coelacanth∅, as are the two Traffic albums or E Pluribus Funk, but Some Girls is a better example, because it includes cuts from the interior of the cover, not just the border.

The Some Girls cover was changed due to legal challenges by celebrities depicted on it.

Mary i happen to be in the house where most of my records are stored so i had to look. i found my original copy of wish you were here (& another one i don't remember obtaining) and no shrink wrap any more - unless i stored it elsewhere, which i might've. i did pull the record out, knowing the my former self could've folded the shrinkwrap up and stuck it inside; and i see that i saved the round sticker (i.pinimg.com...) from the shrinkwrap...glued it to the middle of the record!

That last comment of mine wasn't an instruction. It was a suggestion for a great album title.

@coelacanth∅: I know what you're saying but I can't think of who. I do know Feederz stole the idea from Guy DeBord, who I think did it to a book, but I am pretty sure another, unrelated artist also did it with an LP.

Olle Borg is apparently a well-know visual artist in Sweden. Here's a peak at some of his stuff: spgallery.se...

I think there was also a band who released a 7 inch with the inside of the jacket, record included, all glued together. Again, I cannot recall who at the moment.

NON's first release was a 7" EP with an eccentric spindle hole in addition to the usual one in the middle.

Yes, Dean! That's it!

Each copy of this Olle Borg LP comes with a hand-made cover by Borg (tho mine is just a promo copy, with a plain white cover)

Ever buy any of Eugene Chadbourne's cassette releases or early CDR releases? They're usually literally made from stuff lying around casa de Chadbourne.

The first Meat Puppets 7" came with an original ink drawing (by one of the band?) on ordinary three-hole-punched ruled paper. I cherish my copy.

Buddy of mine has one of those Chadbourne CDRs.

I've done that with old records; drill off center holes. A bit called a forstner drill bit works best. It makes a neater hole and won't crack the record.

Hey, Chris! Yeah, this Olle Borg is great! I'm now on the hunt for this thing he's on: www.discogs.com...

And again: I *will* be archiving today's show, just to break with tradition.

The same buddy did an "alternate hole" remix of Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street." Mary Wing has played it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CCB59CTZmM

I'm just not set up to store weird/overly large boxes, etc, for records, CDs or cassettes. At least with the latter, I can just put them in storage since I rarely access tapes unless I'm ripping them.
But some of those Caroliner Rainbow releases are a pain in the ass to store. My wife thought one of them was a used box of office paper and nearly threw it out. It was also smashed flat by the time I'd bought it.

@ Rich: At least one of my Caroliner packages has medical waste in it.
