This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Blind Tourist makes for a hell of an intro for this show. How do, all!
Avatar 7:01pm Flash Strap:

Thanks, I did that for an article about plant music a year or so ago and it seemed to complement the show tonight. they're speakers

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm doctorjazz:

LOVE this Threadgill (though I've always thought the intonation was a bit off... On purpose?). Great later when it picks up steam.

Avatar 7:05pm Flash Strap:

this is still pretty much the only Henry Threadgill album I really know – somebody in these comments is a huge Threadgill lover but I can't recall who, is it you Doc?

Avatar 7:07pm Flash Strap:

i honestly don't really know, chresti. i know I like music that people make "for" plants, like Plantasia, but I never really learned more about what tones plants respond to
Avatar 7:08pm Flash Strap:

What are some good ones to pick up, Hyde? I have no Air
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm Michael 98145:

@chresti, anything that leafs you speechless ?

@melinda-yeah! my stars are piling up in a cabinet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm melinda:

I still have little scraps of paper from other radio stations and before I discovered the click-star system here. I did start writing down some names and titles of music that is mellow and soothing, since it a genre I seem to need a lot of, and I can't tell from my favorites which ones those might be.
Avatar 7:38pm Flash Strap:

i really like his weird little stuttering note clusters, very interesting technique

i agree, melinda, very unlikely in a way but I think rather charming and dreamy

Avatar 7:45pm geezerette:

Hyde, that's great! Congratulations on having moved!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm melinda:

When I see Henry Threadgill I think Kenneth Threadgill, a country singer and bar owner of the early Austin music scene and namesake of a local favorite restaurant, so I expect quite different sounds to come out. I'll have to investigate Henry further.
Avatar 7:46pm hyde:

@geez thanks! will be better when it's all unpacked

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm melinda:

@passiflora interesting connection. I think I've heard of the Atheist Experience but didn't know it was Austin-based. I remember when Madalyn Murray O'Hair ran the American Atheist Center there, we stopped by once with my dad after seeing a movie down the street.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm passiflora:

Avatar 8:32pm Little Danny:

Oh man this is gorgeous. There's more atmospheric Latin pop balladry out there, I just don't know it yet
Avatar 8:33pm Flash Strap:

That Meridian Bros record is crazy good, highest possible recommendation to pick it up and spend some time with it, extremely rewarding
Avatar 8:34pm Flash Strap:

@LD: Duo Ouro Negro is a huge well of beautiful Portuguese language Angolan pop. one of the best international groups of the era, imo
Avatar 8:35pm βrian:

@Flash Strap:
Are you *ever* going to update this playlist theme to an accessible one? It's really awful! If you value readability think about contrast, at least! Doesn't WFMU have *any* kind of common-sense UI guidelines?? Oy!

(Well, given the main WFMU page, maybe not. But still … )

Rant over, but I'd love to be able to read your playlist without having to manually disable CSS!
Avatar 8:35pm Flash Strap:

this whole Picci LP is gold, though i don't know anything else from the label
Avatar 8:36pm hyde:

@Flash it sounds great!

yesterday was the first day I became aware of this Ultimate Spinach LP, had never heard it before
Avatar 8:43pm Flash Strap:

still have not really listened to the rest of it, can't get over this song's perfect dreadful psych
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm chresti:

adjusting the contrast might help
Avatar 8:45pm hyde:

this is pretty much the only thing i ever played from this LP. there's a couple other ok tunes, but this is kinda the album
Avatar 8:45pm Flash Strap:

@Hyde: that's the basic idea i have of it as well
Avatar 8:47pm Little Danny:

@hyde me too. I seem to remember that their Behold & See LP is kinda a one-track affair, too. Brilliant segue by the way
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm chresti:

I find it easy on the eye and refreshing!
Gypsy psych spinach
Avatar 8:48pm Flash Strap:

I was thinking of trying to find that record too – it has at least one killer track? that'd be enough for me
Avatar 8:49pm βrian:

Yup, for sure. But making your playlist available to all is a policy decsion. It has nothing to do with code. I just think it's something that's been blithely overlooked.

It's only frustrating because access to the conversation is limited.
Avatar 8:51pm Little Danny:

You might start by clarifying accessibility a bit, but like I said, take that shit to email bro. I have no problem seeing or interacting with Flash's playlists and comments btw
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm chresti:

tipping the screen changes the contrast too!
Avatar 8:52pm coelacanth∅:

i've got the same general attitude about ultimate spinach. 2 albums i have and a few shining songs and some sort of trying really hard to be far out skipables.
Avatar 9:02pm Flash Strap:

curious what you think: does Melvoin or Denjean have the better Lay lady lay moog-style?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm melinda:

I would have to listen to them both again to decide. Maybe Denjean. I'm just happy that there is more than one.
  9:04pm zonk ludlow:

I'd give the nod to Denjean. Both are mighty fine though.
Avatar 9:05pm coelacanth∅:

(not here for the earlier one)
Avatar 9:05pm Flash Strap:

i agree, i give it to Denjean too
Avatar 9:06pm Flash Strap:

would love to know who programmed / played the moog on that Denny LP
Avatar 9:07pm Flash Strap:

Altho, Beaver&Krause consulted on the Melvoin album, so that version has their involvement going for it
Avatar 9:08pm david_:

I liked the Melvoin one better actually
Avatar 9:09pm Flash Strap:

Hi david! glad we're not all ganging up on Melvoin in favor of Denjean. they are both pretty good
Avatar 9:15pm Flash Strap:

This killer watts lp is mostly pretty subpar imo but I like this abstract cut
  9:17pm Dean:

I'll guess the arranger on that Denny album played the Moog, Clark Gassman. He played it a year later no another record: https://www.discogs.com/Ralph-Carmichael-Clark-Gassman-The-Electric-Symphony-The-Moog-Synthesizer/release/879772
  9:17pm Dean:

^on another
Avatar 9:18pm Flash Strap:

Hi Dean! that makes sense
Avatar 9:18pm Franco Twinkie:

Coel, in 1971 I bought the first VU album for a dollar at Newberry's, a local discount store. When I got it home the sealed album had a 007 soundtrack inside. The following week, my mom took me back to Newberry's to exchange the album. They didn't have any more of the banana record, so I got the first Ultimate Spinach record. I took it home and put it on the turntable. After a few songs my sister and I started laughing so hard we had tears in our eyes. Not long after that I threw it onto the roof of our house.
Avatar 9:18pm Flash Strap:

i don't know if Denny was even present for that record, very likely not
Avatar 9:20pm Flash Strap:

Walter Sear handling the moog on this Sid Bass. they did a couple things together, i believe

Since 1969, Rachmaninoff has enjoyed a 180 degree revival. Where once his music was treated, as by Les Baxter, as gussied up pop, it's now respected for its virtuosity and post-Romantic sophistication way beyond mere melody.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm chresti:

so is my dad-a real slippery one
Avatar 9:36pm Franco Twinkie:

Flash, Last week when you played TONTO, I googled the album, and when I saw Malcolm Cecil's picture I went WAAA!!! I use to see him at the gym in Pasadena on an irregular basis.
Avatar 9:36pm Little Danny:

Avatar 9:38pm Flash Strap:

Baxter was really serious, to the point of snobbish, about compostion and art music, a scholar of stravinsky in particular, and it always struck me funny how poppy and simple he went with that record. i love it though

Good eeeevening. Any discussion here tonight about Morricone interview that had to be withdrawn by German Playboy after he griped much of it -- including semi-inflammatory remarks --- was bogus? And the journalist has pretty much acknowledged that. Weird.

I think that's the record store Marc Maron used to mention on his podcast.

presumably you don't mean highland park,nj.
Avatar 9:44pm Flash Strap:

very immersive sound space on this record. you can close your eyes and see all around you inside this track
  9:44pm Doug Schulkind:

Wow, Dan is still doing Gimme Gimme? He was one of WFMU’s earliest and longtime dealers at our record fair.
Avatar 9:45pm Flash Strap:

Hi B/P! i haven't heard anything about that, sounds weird!
Avatar 9:45pm Flash Strap:

I gotta go to that fair this year, enough is enough
Avatar 9:45pm Franco Twinkie:

Yes, Melinda. Mark goes there a lot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm melinda:

@b/p I read about that! He had him saying Quentin Tarantino was a cretin, among other things. Not being a huge fan of QT I thought that was kinda funny.
Avatar 9:47pm Flash Strap:

i like most of his flicks but I agree it is funny and fair to say he is a cretin
Avatar 9:48pm coelacanth∅:

i wonder if that story has any relation to Fabio playing a whole Morricone set today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm melinda:

@Flash right? I was disappointed when I read on and Morricone denied it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm melinda:

@coel sorry I missed that.
  9:49pm Dean:

Nothing in particular in '69. My point was that around that time Rachmaninoff was pop fodder, seemingly doomed to irrelevance as a "real" classical composer. Since then, and based on my fairly regular attention to reviews of an endless stream of new recordings of his work, that focus has shifted. What was once a guilty pleasure -- the second piano concerto, for instance -- is no longer a source of shame, pace Uncle Michael!
Avatar 9:50pm coelacanth∅:

Morricone may've had second thoughts about dissing someone in the industry he works within
Avatar 9:51pm Flash Strap:

that may have as much to do with the overall trend for doing pop and novelty version of "classical" as anything to do with Rachmaninoff in particular
Avatar 9:51pm still b/p:

Up to you, melinda, to grant an interview, make the definitive declaration on QT, and then reinforce: "I'm melinda, and I approved this message!"
  9:52pm Franco Twinkie:

Dan moved out here awhile ago. First he had this little place on York Blvd, then he moved to a bigger place on Figueroa. After you visit Dan, you can walk up the street to Triple Beam for pizza.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm melinda:

@b/p haha

Avatar 9:56pm hyde:

Avatar 9:57pm still b/p:

There's a baker/confectioner in Nice....If you make it there, I need a little something in particular.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm chresti:

Thanks Flash! Fantastic!
  9:58pm Dean:

I don't think so. I think Rachmaninoff is sui generis in this regard. What I would need to support my suspicion is contemporaneous (c. 1969) commentary about recordings of his music by classical critics and aficionados. I don't have that at hand. But my gut feeling -- take it for what it's worth -- is that the pop-ification of Rach at the time was poo-poo'd by many who leveled blame at Rach for not being immune to pop. That's different for, say, Bach or Debussy, whose works were also pop-ified, but the results of which didn't cast a shadow on their "real" music.
Avatar 9:58pm Flash Strap:

Thanks all! much much love – see you in Danny's Cool Blue House, and then again in 2 weeks
Avatar 9:58pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Evan!
and do have an incredible journey, won't you?!
Avatar 9:59pm Flash Strap:

my gut tells me you're quite right dean
Avatar 10:00pm Flash Strap:

esp. the comparison to debussy
Avatar 10:00pm Flash Strap:

i'll try, C.! thank you friend
  10:02pm Dean:

Right. Debussy survives appropriation (Tomita?). So, to my mind, does Bach, among others.
