Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am Ken From Hyde Park:

I think Bryce has played this Rattle track before. It was slowed down by 64x, though.

@Ken: He played it right. The turntable is on 45. Whoops!

Scott Williams played this Chris Corsano & Bill Orcutt song last week. Excellent.

Avatar 9:42am Davee:

Hello Joe. Cannot wait for 10:30 . . . .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am The Oscar:

I feel like Thanksgiving is an underrepresented holiday musically in general. You're pretty much stuck with "Simple Gifts" and Stan Freberg.
Avatar 9:50am Joe McG:

@The Oscar: My favorite is Loudon Wainwright's "Thanksgiving," which is the saddest holiday song ever written.
Avatar 9:52am βrian:

Just saw Loudon about a month ago, and he sang that song. Dear me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Beast of Boonton:

No Alice's Restaurant please
Avatar 9:53am Joe McG:

@Brian: It's a doozie.
Avatar 9:53am βrian:

@Sem: our garlic is in, too, snuggled beneath a warm bed of straw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am The Oscar:

@Joe Ooh, good call. Though for my money there is no better Thanksgiving entertainment than Blood Freak, the world's only Christian anti-drug were-turkey '70s biker gore film.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Granny Spicy Tuna:

@pantz i got two cats draped over the furniture, and there's a nice beach for dogs to run around on just 5 minutes down the path

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Beast of Boonton:

'March of the wooden soldiers' is a must see on Thanksgiving
Avatar 9:56am Brian in UK:

Rain stopped play again.
The Clientele would fit in nicely hereabouts.
Avatar 9:56am Davee:

a second vote for Alice's Restaurant
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am steveo:

it's almost a movement!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Vincent Nifigance:

@Davee so, one then?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Vincent Nifigance:

For those of us who have never experienced it, is Thanksgiving just Christmas in it's casual pants?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am steveo:

(for the record I am remaining neutral on the AR vote)
Avatar 9:59am Brian in UK:

Don't forget the pickle!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Lizardner Dave Somethingorother:

Thank you for this, Joe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Itzall Ablurr:

Vincent N., Thanksgiving is all the fighting and none of the gifts.
  10:01am Brendan:

Good morning Joe . I was digging the Wurlitzery bounce when that tune abruptly ended.Pete sounds good anytime though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Vincent Nifigance:

@Itzall Ablurr: So it's like 'The Purge: Family Dinner'?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Vincent Nifigance:

Sort of inverse, people locked in there houses, killing their family?
Avatar 10:04am Brian in UK:

Any reports on Ray Davies' recent solo music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Itzall Ablurr:

I don't get the reference, my interest in pop culture stopped in 2016. Killing? Man I hope not. Arguing? Sure. Fisticuffs? Maybe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Beast of Boonton:

There was a big sign and a chain across the dump sayin', "this dump is closed on Thanksgiving
  10:06am spaceman one:

That newly released Kinks track is truly amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am pantz:

It all depends on how much box wine is involved. My rule is when I hear politics, I leave the table for a "break".
Avatar 10:07am northguineahills:

This song relates to me! (been to the Fountain of Youth in St Augustine, didn't work).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Granny Spicy Tuna:

i'm gonna cry
Avatar 10:08am Davee:

Here is a tissue....
  10:08am Listener Alexandra:

As I live and type, I never thought I'd ever hear you play the Alan Parsons Project, Joe. And a good morning to you too!
  10:09am Will:

First record I ever bought was the single "Love Letters" by Ketty Lester.
Avatar 10:09am northguineahills:

Yaye, SheilaB really brought out the Alan Parsons in WFMU!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Granny Spicy Tuna:

It's Alan Parsons week at WFMU, sniff, thanks for the tissue, Davee

  10:12am Brendan:

Its cool he called the band the project.
Avatar 10:13am northguineahills:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am steveo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am steveo:

Progrssive Spirit in the Sky?
Avatar 10:17am northguineahills:

@Brendan: There's an Austin Powers joke in there....
  10:17am blee:

Obscured is Pinky's best album in my bloated opinion.
Avatar 10:18am Joe McG:

@Brian: You're so right! I never noticed!
Avatar 10:18am Davee:

Norma Greenbaum copied Pink Floyd?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Granny Spicy Tuna:

This sounds rather choogling to me
Avatar 10:19am Joe McG:

@Davee: Norm came first!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Krys O.:

Finally able to chime in here. Excellent show, Joe. I enjoyed it tremendously on my two mile trek from the dentist to the doctor.
Avatar 10:21am Davee:

@Joe. I thought Norman's came out in 75 or so.....hmmm, time flies.
  10:23am David in London:

Ah the fun of the days of the ‘party line’, sharing a telephone line with your neighbours. Ye gods.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Krys O.:

Excellent segues from Ketty to Alan to Sandy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am steveo:

  10:24am blee:

I'm going to have to dig up
some Norman G.
  10:24am KP in DC:

I remember when you had that author on and she played Bruce and the Allman Brothers. Suddenly Jersey City was overrun with torches and pitchforks. Funny thing was MJM was running a piece on her and thought she was wonderful

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am steveo:

meditating on death can be a good way to remind us to live
  10:29am Morphe:

It did not seem haphazzard nor overly planned...
Sounds like my youth 12-17 years old '73'-78... Hung out with an older crowd with even older siblings - UK, SF sound and everything in between -- then came punk and Evan Funk Davies at NYU and then FMU... It is one big
Non-Vicious circle - one of the Celtic eternity circles...
Thanks Joe
  10:32am Brendan:

Time ... to play B sides
Avatar 10:33am Joe McG:

I like that idea, The Oscar! Reality check!
  10:33am KP in DC:

When I saw the Zombies lead singer Colin Blunstone did a couple of Alan Parsons Project songs. That was bad enough.
Avatar 10:34am northguineahills:

@The Oscar: Awesome airtight alliteration!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Itzall Ablurr:

Heaven 17 artwork operative phrase: 80s hotel/coporate interiors palette, pink, yellow and teal. Even the very word "teal" grates. I'm sure they would have added a mirror element if possible.
Avatar 10:36am Marc Francis:

Damn. That was a CHOOOOOOOOON!
Avatar 10:36am Joe McG:

@Itzall: Totally! Like those awful 80s paintings by that guy who was so big in the early 80s, I forget his name. Long legged women in sunglasses and red lipstick with Italian sports cars.
  10:37am kev:

your a good thing Joe

  10:38am melinda:

I always liked this FYC, nice blast from the past!
  10:41am David in London:

By coincidence I’m going to see Heaven 17 next week , so I will happily take up the issue of their poor sleeve design and graphics on behalf of Surface Noise...
Avatar 10:42am Dominick:

Oh my! I thought I had the only copy of this ditty!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am steveo:

Avatar 10:45am Roberto:

Wow, the studio version of this kicks ass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Mark Hurst:

Loving this set, Joe
Avatar 10:45am Joe McG:

@steveo: I'd settle for one Beyonce.
Avatar 10:45am Marc Francis:

Hahahahaaa. I played this on Friday at the 6th anniversary of the bar I DJ at!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Mike Sin:

Man, how long was "Cheers" on the air? Well, now I know the singer of the theme song was "Gary Portnoy" and that the song actually has more than one verse!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Joe, i think the artist in question is Nagel, who plays sax on this song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am VT Knit Girl:

lovin the mix this morning!
  10:46am David in London:

@joe - They’re doing one of those ‘albums in its entirety’ shows and I just couldn’t resist it. It’s on Friday next week, so I will report back here in a fortnight with a verdict. And an answer as to the teal and other design horrors...
Avatar 10:46am Roberto:

Cheers, NBC, 1982-1993.
  10:46am frenchee:

SOPRANO SAX = aaaaaaaack atttttttacccckkk
Avatar 10:47am Joe McG:

Glad you're enjoying the show, VT Knit Girl! @David: Yes, please do, I'd love to hear about it. @frenchee: I am WITH you!
  10:47am Kat in Chicago:

“And your husband wants to be a girl”? Whoa. I never heard the full version of Cheers before. That was interesting.
  10:47am queems:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am pantz:

Portnoy sure had a lot of complaints.

I'll show myself out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am VT Knit Girl:

Micheal at his finest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am steveo:

oh, oh, "fiancé". that song has a lot of lyrics -- who knew?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am The Oscar:

Scale back the synths and bring up the guitars, and the Cheers theme would make a pretty fantastic power pop single.
  10:49am frenchee:

LOL good one @pantz Joe, the only musician whose sop-sax playing I can tolerate is Charlie Parker. And he's dead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Mark Hurst:

@pantz, we'd roth-er not hear puns
  10:50am frenchee:

Y'all are killin' me. Dont. Stop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am The Oscar:

I've held for a while that the soprano sax is to my generation as the accordion is to my parents'.
  10:51am Morphe:

The Japanese Oum Kasoum[sp???]

Gotta go.. Thanks Joe
  10:52am Brendan:

@steveo, Runt’s ‘All The Children Sing’ (https://youtu.be/8wPsZa_N7jY) is nice low-tech early era video and a great tune.
Avatar 10:52am Brian in UK:

Had your Phil of that sort of thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am steveo:

thanks, Brendan; bookmarked for later
  10:53am melinda:

@Oscar haha
Avatar 10:54am northguineahills:

Unless I'm mistaken, Mayuko is no longer child, so I'm not sure if the suffix -chan is appropriate (but it still is a term of endearment, and I still call friends in their 30s "kids", I'm not one to speak). *nihon-go semantics off*
Avatar 10:55am Brian in UK:

This is not one of Beatrix Potters' bunnies.
Avatar 10:57am Joe McG:

@ngh: I meant it endearingly, but you're correct
  10:58am Nate K:

Love this Alexander Rabbit track.
Avatar 10:59am Joe McG:

@Nate: All 6:43 of it!
  10:59am Brendan:

This really escalated
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am The Oscar:

Well that was fucking awesome.
  11:02am Brendan:

Joe the A side was a Thanksgiving low hanger fruit, but I’m glad you played Malaguena

  11:06am Nate K:

Re: Cheers, I disagree. Coach was fantastic, but Woody was a worthy replacement.
  11:06am melinda:

I forgot about Coach. That was a long time ago.
  11:08am Nate K:

Woody and Coach were pen pals; they mailed each other pens.
  11:09am Bob:

What did Norm do for a living?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am pantz:

Avatar 11:10am Roberto:

I very much enjoyed the arc with that French guy (Henri) who continually threatened to steal Woody's rich girlfriend.
Avatar 11:10am Roberto:

I saw Coach in a restaurant in LA shortly before he passed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am steveo:

I flew coach to Los Angeles.
Avatar 11:12am Roberto:

I've ridden coach to LA entirely too many times. And I have long legs.
  11:15am Nate K:

Was Norm a house painter later on?
  11:15am Nate K:

The Woody/Kelly arc is a classic, I think.
Avatar 11:17am Roberto:

Yes, norm took up house panting and also interior decorating.
Avatar 11:19am northguineahills:

I barely remember Cheers, but used to watch Coach as a kid....
Avatar 11:20am Joe McG:

To me, the whole point of the show was the frustrating, ridiculous romance of Sam and Diane, so once that ran its course, I thought the show was over.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Greg from ZONE 5:

Morning, Joe! Sorry I'm late.
Avatar 11:21am Joe McG:

@Greg: Docked a point!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Uncle Michael:

The piano solo is gonna make me well up. It always does.
  11:23am Nate K:

Joe, I think the supporting cast of Cheers really came to the fore post Sam and Diana, and it became a true ensemble show. Then you have your Liliths, Eddie Lebecs, and Robin Colcords...so many great characters even beyond the core.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Hughie Considine:

Aw, great tune, Joe. I wonder if anyone has ever done a vocalese version of "Jessica."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Krys O.:

This brings up many childhood memories.

Came here to say something about the piano solo... what UM said!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am tim from champaign:

"It's a dog eat dog world and I've got Milkbones in my pants."
  11:25am Dean:

My buddies and I made a Super 8mm movie in junior high, Heart Attack and Car Crash. "Jessica" was the soundtrack.
Avatar 11:26am Joe McG:

@Nate: I don't like all those characters much, I have to admit, esp. Frazier and Lilith.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am tim from champaign:

That's my favorite Norm "how's it going?" response
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Uncle Michael:

This is an edited version, I think. The album cut is over seven minutes long. The piano solo is a release after a big build in the album track.
  11:27am David in London:

I stood next to George Wendt at a Pere Ubu gig once. It was a rather surreal experience to keep glancing to my right and seeing Norm.
  11:27am melinda:

I liked Frasier and Lilith.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Uncle Michael:

Can't be...my bad. Joe's playing the LP.
Avatar 11:27am Joe McG:

@Uncle Michael: No, I'm playing the LP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Beast of Boonton:

Dicky Betts is recovering after brain surgery in September
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Uncle Michael:

See above!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Beast of Boonton:

He had a freak accident playing with his dog
Avatar 11:28am Joe McG:

Whoops! @Beast: Did not know that, thanks for the news. Hope he's well!
Avatar 11:28am Brian in UK:

Another relentless/timeless track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am The Oscar:

@David I'm imagining George Wendt and David Thomas switching places, and I'm not sure which one is more awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Uncle Michael:

Yeah, Dickey took a fall by his pool and struck his head, if I recall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Hughie Considine:

"I Stood Next to George Wendt at a Pere Ubu Gig" is the new Sun Kil Moon single.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Webhamster Henry:

I've never seen Cheers, Friends, or Wings.
  11:31am COLINfromvictoriabritishcolumbiacanada:

wow, I hate this singing style
  11:31am Vincent Nifigance:

TIL Wings.
  11:32am KP in DC:

You didn’t have to listen to me when I mentioned that ABB fiasco but Dickie Betts is my brand of Allmans
  11:32am David in London:

@Oscar and Hughie - yes indeed. I found out later that he is apparently quite the fan of out there music. Knowing that, I’ve always though he needed his own hardcore band, a la Tad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Uncle Michael:

Avatar 11:35am Joe McG:

Be careful when you're horsing around with your dogs, folks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am The Oscar:

I'm actually not positive I've ever seen a complete episode of Cheers, but it's so permeated into pop culture that I feel like I know all the characters and their general arcs. I wouldn't be averse to diving in, but it feels daunting. I'm already trying to make my way through Dark Shadows as it is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Hughie Considine:

In 14 months I only smiled once/and i didn't do it consciously..."
Avatar 11:37am Sem:

Been some time since I last heard this one, Joe. Thanks!
Avatar 11:37am Wild Neil||Peace All:

My boss the owner is not following company procedures. Do we write him up for it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Hughie Considine:

@David, somehow Wendt's love for Pere Ubu and the like seems related to Sherman Helmsley's well established affection for prog.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am steveo:

i saw the make way for ducklings statues in the public garden...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Krys O.:

George Wendt was in David Thomas' play Mirror Man.
Avatar 11:40am Brian in UK:

First time I heard this Dylan song was on Roger McGuinn's Cardiff Rose album. He also covered Joni's Dreamland. Around the time of Rolling Thunder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Krys O.:

George took over a role from my friend Daved Hild of the Girls in version 2 of Mirror Man. en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar 11:42am Joe McG:

@Brian: I think that's the "original" version. The other Dylan version came out on "Biograph," I think.
Avatar 11:43am Jay Goges:

loved that last Dylan tune. It fit the Monday vibes well.
  11:45am David in London:

@Hughie - ha ha! And next will probably come some revelation about Angela Lansbury actually being a huge fan of Throbbing Gristle.
  11:46am Mark in Toronto:

I think it's "Its a dog eat dog world, and I'm wearing Milkbone underwear"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Greg from ZONE 5:

Interesting, trippy turn for Jojo…
  11:47am frenchee:

This Jonathan R is very cool
I could listen to him just hum tho
Avatar 11:47am βrian:

I prefer to think of it as a "doggy-dog" world.
Avatar 11:48am Brian in UK:

Great entertainment as ever.
  11:48am Nate K:

@David, if I recall correctly Elton John was/is a TG fan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am steveo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Itzall Ablurr:

Thank you for another great program, Mr. Joe! Hope to catch up in the archives, Monday got busy. Happy T-Day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Hughie Considine:

@David, exactly -- but I'm told Angela was more into the Psychic TV stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Davis:

  11:51am David in London:

@Nate K - Elton’s cover of ‘Zyklon B Zombie’ must be quite something...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Davis:

that drifter song was ace
Avatar 11:52am Joe McG:

Glad you folks enjoyed the show today. Thanks for listening and commenting, and for those of you over on this side of the pond, enjoy your Thanksgiving! I'll be back next Monday with more songs for you!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am pantz:

  11:54am Morphe:

Enjoying this show today! Thanks Joe !!!!
New Jonathan Richman track is very very good
  11:58am Blix:

In the strange thread of artists' other musical interests, DMC of Run DMC is a huge Sarah McLachlan fan and would annoy everyone in his entourage by always having her music playing before and on the way to shows.
