@Joe. Thanks for gettin’ me up easy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am The Oscar:

Mornin' all! Bummed to interrupt my long weekend/last-week-of-Filmstruck binge with work, but Bobbie makes it better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am Vincent Nifigance:

I have an advance copy of the new Mercury Rev cover of this album with guest singers. Not sure if that is of interest to anyone, but it's a thing that has happened.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am linderstorm:

Morning, Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am steveo:

whoa hey what day is it? where am i? oh....hi Joe, good to hear you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am karlward:

I am wondering aloud what McGasko's "Lust for Life" is. By that, I mean what's his super high energy jam? Like if McGasko were on the run from the cops, what's the lead single from that soundtrack?
  9:10am D in St Pete:

Happy Thanksgiving hangover all you jive turkeys

Hoping to grab that new Bobbie Gentry 8 CD box on Cyber Monday...

@karlward: Right now it's "Pretty Feelings" by Music City! @everybody: If there are amazing deals out there to be had, pass them along. :)
  9:37am Irene:

Brilliant opening set, Joe!
Avatar 9:39am Joe McG:

Hi, Irene! I think I just lulled everyone back to sleep with that last track, but I'll wake them back up eventually! :)

Avatar 9:44am Joe McG:

@Monk: Ha ha ha! Hey, Aaron!
Avatar 9:45am Wild Neil||Peace All:

I borrowed a Ry Cooder CD from the library, but did not like it much. I tried. Is there one or two really amazing Ry Cooder albums? I think he plays on Captain Beefheart's Safe as Milk. I also heard he walked out of Woodstock when he saw Captain Beefheart fall off the stage. Not sure if that's true. Anybody?
Swag For Life Member 9:45am mauri:

Heyahey Joe. Sounding good.
Avatar 9:46am Joe McG:

Heya, mauri! How's things on the other side of the planet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am queems:

hey joe & all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am b!!!:

This is a lovely set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Vincent Nifigance:

@Wild Neil||Peace All: I heard Cooder left the Magic Band after someone pulled a crossbow on Don. I think fans regard 'Into the Purple Valley' and 'Bop Til You Drop' as Cooder's best, though the latter is supposed to be his 'commercial album. I prefer his soundtrack work, particularly Paris Texas, and Crossroads.
Avatar 9:50am dale:

love this. sounds like ralph lundsten
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Itzall Ablurr:

Good morning, Joe and everyone. Love this one from Kosmischer Läufer!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am officina:

Great set Joe !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am TheLoneliestMonk:

@JoeMac: we're trying to NOT fall asleep at work today, Brudda!
Avatar 10:00am βrian:

There's a music library where I work, but I gather that's different.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am TheLoneliestMonk:

i'm contemplating carving up one of my guitars to simulate ry's sound. someone finally made a lap steel type pickup that you drop into a regular guitar.
then you gotta put a gold tone in the neck slot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am TheLoneliestMonk:

@VN, WildNeil: he has also done some soundtrack work for werner herzog as well.
e.g. grizzly man
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Vincent Nifigance:

@TheLonliestMonk O think that was Jim O'Rourke and Richard Thompson. Great though.
  10:07am Brendan:

This hiatus surely must be a prelude to Freebird
Avatar 10:09am Joe McG:

@Brendan: Ha ha ha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am TheLoneliestMonk:

@VN rightchooare!
Avatar 10:16am Brian in UK:

Hey Joe from a rapidly light-fading UK.
Avatar 10:18am Brian in UK:

Gene Clark singing 'See the Sky About to Rain' on Byrds (reunion album) is a good case of someone making anothers' song their own.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am TheLoneliestMonk:

Avatar 10:19am Joe McG:

Hey Brian! I think that Byrds reunion LP is a bit underrated. There are some nice things on there.
  10:20am David in London:

Hey Joe, lovely set today.
Avatar 10:21am Joe McG:

Thanks, David! UK strong on the board today!
Avatar 10:22am Brian in UK:

Looks like Grasshopper from the Revs listens to Ubuweb (see second tweet)

Love the early Lucinda. Lots of compassion.
Avatar 10:24am Roberto:

I remember hearing an unfinished version of Something About What Happens on KCRW in '89 or so.
  10:27am Morphe:

Cleaning body, soul, house, clothes all day ... listening but no
time to read...
Thanks Joe.. gotta go Joe.. I'll catch the ending in the archives

Thanks for the tunes...
  10:35am melinda:

I really liked the Jay Bolotin song too.
  10:36am MplsCoco:

Oh Joe!! So wonderful! ❤️ Thank you! And my new favorite album title: Jesus was a Capricorn!
Avatar 10:38am Joe McG:

@MplsCoco: Great title, I agree (speaking as a Capricorn)! ;)
  10:38am MplsCoco:

Good to know Joe! ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Vincent Nifigance:

@TheLonliestMonk: This is my last payday before Christmas, when my family get no presents, I'm blaming you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Greg from ZONE 5:

Morning, Joe and all!
Avatar 10:41am Joe McG:

Hey Greg! Everybody, Greg did his very first WFMU show late last Friday. Go check it out!
  10:41am Brendan:

Avatar 10:48am Joe McG:

@Greg: Sound your funky horn, Greg! Feel free to post a link here. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Ken From Hyde Park:

When the plane carrying Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper went down, Bobby Vee filled in for the show for which they were scheduled.
  10:50am Brendan:

Musicians were great on those old shows when they actually gave them full guest time and they talked to the host and other guests before or after performing. There were some unlikely pairings that made it less stuffy and forced.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am pantz:

What an incredible Husker Du cover!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Goyim in the AM:

This incredible single invented emo, which is something you shouldn't hold against it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Greg from ZONE 5:

OK, but nobody is allowed to listen until noon. Actually, wait, no you have to stick around for Belock. And Jim and Scott…OK, listen when nobody is on the air:
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am karlward:

Joe I never figured you for a early Husker Du Bob Mould type. If I ever thought about this in advance, I'd be sure that you'd land on the Grant Hart side.
  10:53am KP in DC:

Last verse, same as the first
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am steveo:

note to oddsmakers: if there's someone yelling on Joe's show, it's probably Bob Mould :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

Happy Monday, Joe! Love this Husker cover. Brings back the memory of having Flip Your Wig on endless repeat for the better part of a year. Ha! Great show, as ever. Hope you had a great holiday!
Avatar 10:55am Joe McG:

@karlward: I'm full of surprises! @steveo: I'm so predictable!
  10:55am KP in DC:

I was thinking Jean Shepherd!
  10:56am Brendan:

‘Mr Husker Du that was great , but could we do it once more with feeling?’ , (said absolutely no record producer f***ing ever.)
Avatar 10:58am Joe McG:

Thanks, S&M&S! I hope you had a great holiday, too! @Brendan: Ha ha ha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am jmr3:

Ahh - I love the sound of Thorogood's guitar on his first two records, before he went all cornball beer commercial MTV. Might not be authentic, but it sure worked for 14 year old me in 1979 and it still sounds right to me now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am nortonjutland:

great show Joe.... from start to finish
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am TheLoneliestMonk:

the thorogood rounder stuff was alright.
worst thing that ever happened to him was airplay on mTV!
Avatar 11:03am Roberto:

People DO trash George! I knew someone whose friend allegedly went out with him briefly and she said he was laaaame :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am pantz:

Thanks for the swag, Joe! It was waiting for me when I got back home from the holidays with family. Can't wait to listen to your premium.
Avatar 11:05am βrian:

Françoise, Françoise, Françoise !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am The Oscar:

Do Talking Heads have Small Faces?
  11:07am Brendan:

Its a lamb eat lamb world.
  11:07am melinda:

That will be a good Techtonic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am tim from champaign:

My friend and I were goofing on guessing what were the favorite songs of contemporary politicians. We came up with that Joe Biden and Bill Clinton get hammered together, put on sunglasses and then sing Thorogood's Bad To The Bone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Granny Spicy Tuna:

While you were playing George T, Sheena's Jungle Room was playing Plasmatics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Asheville Jon:

holy cow, just checked out the Sheena's Jungle Room Stream, and FEAR 'beef baloney' live is the first song I hear??? holy cow, Joe, you have extremely stiff competition!
  11:09am melinda:

I tuned in to Sheena's Jungle Room recently thinking I might not be in the mood for its genre but I totally got into it, looking forward to more.
  11:11am Garden Variety Lurker:

You probably know better than me Joe. But while there are just 3 big majors in the recording industry, I wonder if their dominance is something that could be questioned given all the other avenues available for recorded music. Just a thought.
  11:11am David in London:

@Tim, ha ha. Then they followed up with a version of ‘Jump’, with Clinton as David Lee Roth and Biden doing some Van Halen air guitar shredding...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am jmd:

Art Brut?!
Avatar 11:13am TDK60:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am The Oscar:

Looking forward to this block-- can't think of many examples off the top of my head...
  11:14am listener monica:

i read "Laurel Canyon" - cass was quite the lady.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am steveo:

this song has its own website, which i will study in detail later :) www.creequealley.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am tim from champaign:

@David in London - hahaha! That's good!
Avatar 11:16am agillyo:

Penelope Bagieu put out a biographical graphic novel about Mama Cass a year or two ago; cool perspective on this story, I highly recommend!
  11:17am Listener Robert:

When that song was new, I heard the lyric as, "And no-one's getting fat steppin' on a cat."
  11:17am Dean:

I guess "Action Time Vision" isn't really a story. Too bad.
  11:18am Brendan:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Greg from ZONE 5:

I keep forgetting about Sheena's Jungle Room! The words "mid-century sleaze culture" really get my heart rate up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am mb:

Morning DJ Joe McG. Dipping in late here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Itzall Ablurr:

"All you stri-ations 'cross the naaaation"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Krys O.:

I can spot that SDQ in one measure!
  11:20am KP in DC:

Big Paul Revere & Raiders fan (have seen Mark Lindsay twice) but don’t remember this one. Except having heard it here recently
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am tim from champaign:

Cool segment, Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am tim from champaign:

This Sir Douglas song is like a Cajun Velvet's jam.
Avatar 11:22am Joe McG:

@tim: Isn't it funny that bands wrote these songs about themselves?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am jmr3:

Let's just acknowledge that you could play Springsteen (at least two songs) and the Dead here, but we all know those songs, so you don't have to.
Avatar 11:24am Roberto:

"Rock and Roll Band" by Boston. You know you want to!
  11:24am Rick A.:

How about The Maddox Brothers and Rose "Thirty-Five Dollars and a Dream"? It's a beautiful tribute to the westward migration.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Hughie Considine:

What a rich vein. Truly inspired set, @Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am The Oscar:

Not quite the same thing, but I've always imagined the video for "Today" by Smashing Pumpkins as their origin story. Billy Corgan is a rogue ice cream man, and just picked the rest of the band up off the road. It honestly makes me like them a lot more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am tim from champaign:

@Joe - Yeah, bands enhancing their own mystique through their own song is pretty cool!
Swag For Life Member 11:25am tadpoles:

Thanks for digging these up Joe, nice segment. All I can think of is "The Ballad of John & Yoko".
Avatar 11:25am Joe McG:

@Roberto: I'm playing Boston next week. (I'm not kidding!) @Rick: Nice suggestion!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am karlward:

I'm pretty sure this origin story leaves out the part where Van Morrison and Bjork sprung fully formed from the head of the Celtic god Ialonus.
Avatar 11:26am Joe McG:

@tadpoles: I think I'll hit that one. Never played it before. @karl: Ha ha ha
  11:26am David in London:

We are the Metermen by The Meters would sneak some New Orleans fonk into the mix...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Hughie Considine:

I'm thinking of Boston and Grand Funk, but not wishing for them.
  11:28am Brendan:

Ballads about band formation, recording and musical trajectories? Interesting concept. As long as you skip Smoke on the Water and Shooting Star.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am karlward:

"We Are the Speednuts" by The Speednuts. Lyrics: "We are the Speednuts / Speednuts, Speednuts / We are the Speednuts / And this is our self-proclaiming song." I have a bootleg of that somewhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am jmr3:

The Minutemen's History Lesson pt 2 would be OK, though, corndogs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Jeff Golick:

Great set, @Joe. Hi. Mekons sing their own saga, too.
Avatar 11:28am Joe McG:

@jmr3: I think they curse in it.
Avatar 11:29am TDK60:

There's a fun cut by The Animals -Story of Bo Diddley- on their meeting him on UK tour, but that category is more artist-meets-another.
Avatar 11:29am Joe McG:

@TDK: You're about to hear it anyway!
Avatar 11:30am Brian in UK:

Morrison and Jagger were listening to the same records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Mister Dobalina:

This track is pretty awesome.
  11:31am Garden Variety Lurker:

I was giggling thinking about how you could play Beastie Boys "Paul Revere" after Paul Revere and the Raiders.
Avatar 11:31am TDK60:

  11:31am Mr Tee:

Let's not forget Ballad of Mott or even Saturday Gigs from MTH. Also corndog though it may be, Come Hear the Band by April Wine fits the bill. And this one doesn't rely on a clanking fire bell.
  11:32am P-90:

Thinking it’s maybe a shame the Banana Splits never did one of these “origin story” songs. You know, about how the boys met up, found their style and developed their act, got the deal with the Kroffts... the “behind the scenes” narrative: personal ups and downs, internal rivalries and tensions, etc.
Avatar 11:32am Joe McG:

You guys have guessed all of my songs! Stay tuned, Mr. Tee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am jmr3:

@ Joe McG - Indeed, I think they add a present participle starting with f when they call themselves corndogs, don't they? You're thinking on your feet on air.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am steveo:

reminds me of Richard Thompson's "Guitar Heroes"
  11:34am melinda:

@Greg the jungle room is fun, there were old movie trailers sprinkled among the music when I listened to the stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am The Oscar:

Jello Biafra's "Buy My Snake Oil" almost fits, but it's less about his past and more about his hypothetical future.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am tim from champaign:

Are there any story songs about FMU DJs? The Legend of Todd-O-Phonic? The Ballad of X-Ray and Jonesy?
Avatar 11:36am still b/p:

Never heard this. Animals cool schoolin'.

Those blues Geordies!

Eric Burdon. Funny and self deprecating.
  11:39am Mr Tee:

nice! I love this feature and have been meaning to chime in before. Now that you've already played something unsuitable to the FMUmasses (George T), maybe you can double down with something never before heard on the station I'd wager: Gabriel-era Genesis! When you're just doing plain stories, or more specifically, demigod origin myth story-songs, Fountain of Salamacis will cover that theme like a wet toga!

David and Ziggy split up over musical simlarities.
  11:40am Brendan:

Songs or album titles by bands that announce the band's name. Hey Hey it's the Monkee's, We are Devo. Or fictitious bands, Sgt. Peppers, Bennie and Jets, Sultans of Swing etc.. discuss
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am tim from champaign:

Would Lou Reed's "Coney Island Baby" work here?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Granny Spicy Tuna:

SF Bay Area is a hub for bands with extensive and indulgent mythologies. An especially special one was the 70's-retro-pop-art-cheeseball band Enrique, with their origin song, "The Band in the Plastic Bubble."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am rsj:

i don't anticipate a rap turn here but there is no shortage of those
Avatar 11:44am Joe McG:

@Mr. Tee: Ha ha ha! Maybe someday.
  11:44am Dean:

One DJ used "Silent Sorrow in Empty Boats" as bed music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am steveo:

possibly the first time I've heard the BoJ&Y on the radio (?)
Avatar 11:47am Joe McG:

@rsj: Oh, I hadn't thought of that! That would have been good.
  11:47am Bill W:

I'm guessing this set ends with "The Ballad of Joe McGasko."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Greg from ZONE 5:

@tim: Some Marathon's back Ted Leo came by and re-wrote The Jam's "That's Entertainment" to be all about FMU.
Avatar 11:47am Joe McG:

@Bill W: I'll have to write one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Webhamster Henry:

Has Macca ever covered this?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am listener Rey:

These are all great. Cover of the Rolling Stone kinda fits too

Rock, John, ROCK!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am The Oscar:

A friend and I once recorded "Ballad of John and Yoko" as part of an intentionally awful Beatles tribute band called Butcher Cover. I really need to dig out those tapes.

Avatar 11:48am Brian in UK:

@steveo Uncle Michael played it last Friday, I believe. Lennon is a wry bugger.

There may not be much difference between Richard Nixon and Chairman Mao - if you strip them naked!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Granny Spicy Tuna:

I have a weakness for bad covers, intentional or by divine intervention. July 4th Toilet did a cover of the entire White Album. It is the winner of them all.
Avatar 11:51am Brian in UK:

Excellent as ever, Joe. Peaceful week everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Webhamster Henry:

Any time for Vine Street?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Krys O.:

Ah, bands being self-referential is not so rare.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am steveo:

@brian --nice, Uncle Michael. yeah i thought about and i had probably heard it as a kid on a "breakfast with the beatles" show or something. I've certainly played Hey Jude enough on my own:)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Listener Scott:

Ballad of Billy the Kid by Billy Joel arguably qualifies for its last few verses. But you really don't have to go there Joe.
  11:53am David in London:

Chilli Willi, outstanding Joe. Snakefinger in the house.

  11:57am Mark in Toronto:

The Story of Rock and Roll by the Turtles perhaps fits in.

steveo, that was fiction, man. Davy was actually in the Merchant Marines, not the navy. True story!
