Did you know there is an WFMU connection to Nazareth? The late station manager Bruce Longstreet worked for them. Can't recall in what capacity though.
Avatar 9:09am agillyo:

@the Oscar think I remember seeing in a doc that the song was written shortly before 4 AM in a state of delirium, hence the title. In any case, it’s what I needed to hear this morning!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am The Oscar:

@dale You have me beat-- I only really know the SCTV version of "Gone Gone Gone."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Krys O.:

There was a Chilliwack album in the mid-80s. We listened to it at the Crazy Eddie store I worked at.
Avatar 9:15am dale:

i'll have to look that up oscar.
Avatar 9:16am Sem:

Missed Chilliwack? Dang.
Hello, Joe, McGaskoes, and Surface Noise enthusiasts.
That just about covers everybody.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Krys O.:

I was 13 in 1976 with all of that awkwardness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Ken From Hyde Park:

I've long since lost my Crazy Eddie T-shirt, but I still have a Crazy Eddie wallet downstairs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am The Oscar:

@dale IIRC, it's pretty much just Moranis, Levy, and Candy as a gawky high school band covering it in its entirety. Each of their characterizations is PERFECT.
Avatar 9:17am Sem:

20,000 miles, that's way more than 7 miles high.
Avatar 9:17am dale:

just looked up Chilliwack Fly by Night on YouTube and up next they had listed 25 or 6 to 4. This can only mean that Joe McG is an algorithm :)
  9:21am MplsCoco:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am The Oscar:

I think Sem's right-- all the band names are cities!
Avatar 9:22am Joe McG:

Avatar 9:27am dale:

pp - you have your computer set up to allow it to listen?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Itzall Ablurr:

  9:31am dale:

I hope it's not listening. I did watch the Chicago video a month ago, so that may be more likely :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Itzall Ablurr:

I, umm... loved Boston. They hit at just the right time for a teenage dude and at first seemed like a weird, out of nowhere mashup of Kiss, Styx, Journey et. al. but kind of clawed their way in to being just BOSTON. Hey, it was the 70s!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Ken From Hyde Park:

City names and cool album covers, that's the theme!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Itzall Ablurr:

Hoping to hear something from Berlin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am The Oscar:

I had a college professor who was a longtime DJ at WFNX in Boston, and he recalled how everyone in town was baffled when this huge arena rock band appeared out of nowhere. It wasn't until later that they realized it was essentially a studio project that suddenly blew up.
Avatar 9:35am Joe McG:

@trouble: Paris is the band featuring your fave, Bob Welch! ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Listener Scott:

Great theme, but please no Asia Joe
Avatar 9:36am Joe McG:

Hey Joe, just come down from the loftspace. Laying mineral wool for extra insulation. Gloves, mask and knee pads. Everyone is wearing them this season.
Avatar 9:41am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Listener Scott:

I believe Sleater-Kinney qualifies, btw

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Ike:

Kansas doesn't count because they're not called Kansas City. Right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am steveo:

i love this song. it seems so bleak though, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Itzall Ablurr:

steveo, of course! That's why it's good, in my opinion.
Avatar 9:55am βrian:

On the ride in to work, our bus kept scraping its top against the cloud ceiling. Not exactly an expansive feelingl
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Ken From Hyde Park:

This is pretty impressive if you just got the idea when Clay Pigeon played "Galveston" just over an hour ago. Procuring all these albums in such a short amount of time, I mean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Itzall Ablurr:

it looks like Calexico is in California and abuts a city in Mexico called Mexicali. Nice.
Avatar 10:06am Wild Neil||Peace All:

I've been to Truth or Consequences. It is near Elephant Butte lake.
Why would there be strange panties in my laundry? My wife found these and I have no explanation. I do not have a mistress. My wife and I go to the YMCA sometimes and use the locker rooms there. My niece visited this summer, but they are not hers.
I guess Queen is not a valid option for band names that are locations?
Real NM town names: Weed and Claunch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Ken From Hyde Park:

Good thing they dropped "Transit Authority" from their name, hereby qualifying them to be on the playlist today.
Avatar 10:06am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Avatar 10:08am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Brian-LOL! Literally, I laughed out loud! Good thing I wasn't drinking milk.
  10:08am Daybreak, the Human:

I very much appreciated being able to hear from people who love there cities and town while I graded for an hour. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE THOUGHT AND EFFORT!

Sorry to shout, but it’s easy to wing things which is what I and many of us do most of the time. But sometimes, we can make ourselves and everyone else a little special by putting ourselves out there through our thought and effort!

Thanks again Joe!
Avatar 10:09am Joe McG:

Thanks, Daybreak, nice sentiments! Give the kiddies good grades.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am pantz:

There's a small park south of Cincinnati called Big Bone Lick. I chuckle every time I pass it on the hwy, but my sense of humor never left middle school.
Avatar 10:09am βrian:

Apparently, there was a band name Gotham. Does that qualify?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am The Oscar:

@Brian Too bad they wouldn't be eligible for today's show, unless there's a Strange Panties, Minnesota.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Greg from ZONE 5:

Morning, Joe and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am steveo:

maybe the panties came from elephant butte!

Seriously though, what are strange panties doing in my laundry. What does Occam's Razor say about this?
Avatar 10:11am βrian:

... and there are any number of Thompsonvilles out there.
Avatar 10:11am northguineahills:

I'm a geographer, and never heard of the town of Richard Thompson....
  10:12am David in London:

@Joe McG - A couple of weeks ago I said I would report back about the Heaven 17 gig I was shortly due to attend. Happily they were excellent, more full-on than I had anticipated, and Glen Gregory’s voice is still bold and strong. They even threw in a couple of early Human League numbers, such as Being Boiled, which HL don’t do themselves anymore. So all in all, far from being over the hill as yet...
Avatar 10:12am Wild Neil||Peace All:

There is a Jim Thorpe, PA I think.

BiUK: i finally saw Culture Club a couple of years ago, in Oakland CA. It fulfilled all of my adolescent dreams, except i didn't get to party with them…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Krys O.:

YES!!!! Had this on a Kate Bush mix tape from a co-worker in the 80s.

I like that there is a group called Huddersfield Transit Authority, and that they covered Runaway.
Avatar 10:49am Brian in UK:

@GST they probably were all in bed by midnight.
Avatar 10:49am Joe McG:

@melinda: Me, too! I wonder if they were making fun of Chicago.
Avatar 10:50am Joe McG:

@Brian in UK: Where is Huddersfield?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Colleen:

@Granny Spicy....I tried to fulfill that same adolescent dream this summer and failed! They were sold out! Which made me sadly happy that they were still "That cool"
Avatar 10:51am Roberto:

I don't think I was aware of this Kate Bush single. Thanks for the enlightenment, Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Colleen; don't give up the dream. Even to this cynical weirdo, the show transported me to an MTV wonderland of delight!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Hughie Considine:

Interesting cover! What it lacks in Garfunkularity it makes up with strings...kinda

I had a few beers with Richards Butler at the Telephone Bar on 2nd Ave in NYC during his Love Spit Love phase. Completely charming, low-key, not at all rock star-ish.

Wow, those are dopey lyrics. It sounds so much better when Kate Bush obscures the meaning with her singing style.
Avatar 11:06am the Canterbury wood-elf:

Sorry to be a Brit pronunciation pedant, Joe, but "Charing" rhymes with the first bit of "larynx", rather than "sparring". Loved that second set by the way...

That is why I have never got Kate Bush.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am The Oscar:

Could be a reference to the British tradition of ghost stories at Christmas? Also, I'm pretty delighted that there exists a Christmas song with the line "Inside Oscar's mind."

Oblique Dorian Grey reference. Makes as much sense as any thing else.

@john, i guess the Butlers are among the rare rock brothers who could stand each other.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Hughie Considine:

@John l: bed music is a loop of Kevin Ayers made by DJ Joe.
  11:11am Brendan:

Kate pays tribute to her hero, Oscar Wilde, who died in Paris the same month as the single was released, eighty years earlier.
Avatar 11:11am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Kate Bush was hot. I think she traded on that. I think she was trained to sing Opera too. My 15 year old son finds Chrome "unlistenabl". Oh well, I guess I stretched his musical Overton Window a bit with that run through of the CD in the car. Heh! He's all "Led Zeppelin this" and "10CC that". Although he did ask for Mr. Bungle for Christmas (California!). He heard about it from some dude on the internet.

@the canterrbury wood-elf: what is the proper pronunciation of "pedant" ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am tim from champaign:

I love how the music that Ira the K plays when he DJs or in this case recommends sounds like his band. Not in an egotistical way but more like he's giving the listeners a glimpse of how his ear works. Whether it's a boogaloo jam or 60s folk pop, it all makes sense.
Avatar 11:15am northguineahills:

@WN: Don't worry, when I was 15, I didn't listen to music that wasn't top 40. It take a year later to have that revelation.

Avatar 11:25am Sem:

Neither, I think, Brian. It is a corner (of the paper) in which you find more than one pendant, yes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Phillippe Bastille:

@pantz @Krys We use the "Yes, I can hear you, Clem Fandango" in my family when someone has forgotten to do something and another family member reminds them. Always afraid I'm going to use it on a conference call when one of the attendees asks "can you hear me?"
Avatar 11:26am βrian:

With pendants, it all depends.

Thanks @Brian. @johnk And the Everlys, and the Gallaghers. It's a really deep phenomenon. Then of course you have the rare brother duos who are total equals, like the Maels. And the D'Addario brothers of the Lemon Twigs, who seem poised to bring brother rock forward.
