Hello, all. Don't see how anyone would be able to recognize today's LP-under-the-cassettes, so I'll just spill the beans straight off. It's this thing: www.discogs.com...

Tony Coulter:

Thanks to my Portland compadre Dane for the loan of this Jonathan X tape.
  12:11pm
Dane:

Hey just got here
Avatar 12:12pm
Tony Coulter:

Dane! I guess I summoned you by mentioning your name!
  12:12pm
ike:

Hi! Today’s random letters are: CVHDFJSGJF
Avatar 12:13pm
Tony Coulter:

Hola, Ike! I will try to put those letters to good use.
Avatar 12:14pm
Tony Coulter:

As you may have deduced by now, Jonathan X is African American, which very much colors his lyrics.

Dane:

Venus needs men that drive semi trucks.

Rich in Washington:

Thank you, Tony! Preparing for it is one of my excuses for my relative unavailability lately.
I am simultaneously psych'd and terrified.
  12:22pm
Dean:

Musique Plastique moved across the corridor. Picked up four LPs for almost nothing. Fun store.
Avatar 12:23pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Dean! Yes, great store -- I'll be heading there today after the show.
  12:24pm
Dean:

Well, don't expect to find the Bee Gees' Trafalgar for a buck. I grabbed it!

They moved across Alberta? Bigger space?
Avatar 12:25pm

No, same building, but different room.
  12:25pm
Dean:

They moved from the NE end of the corridor in the building to the SW end.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm

Ah. Haven't been there in a while. I kind of liked it, just haven't gone back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm

oh. Literally across the corridor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm
Rich in Washington:

This is pretty cool, Tony! Not a lot of stuff like this in the cassette scene, let alone 80s underground.
Avatar 12:29pm
Tony Coulter:

Yeah, there wasn't too much funk in the cassette underground scene.
Avatar 12:33pm
Tony Coulter:

(funk as in these bass lines)

Yikes!
Lucky I didn't step out of my office just now. I had it up really loud.

I only heard "Sexless Machine," but I like it. Pretty out there.
  12:39pm
Mark R.:

Rich, what sort of things might we expect to hear on your show, and when does it start?
Avatar 12:39pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Mark!
  12:41pm
Mark R.:

Hey Tony!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm
Rich in Washington:

Hmmm. So far, random records and tapes and CDs from the fringes of my collection. A lot of moldy, Pacific NW thrift store finds. I'm kind of excited about it. I think it will be a bit less artsy fartsy than my KBOO radio show and a bit more about recorded oddities.
  12:46pm
Mark R.:

Sounds cool. Never got to hear your KBOO show--what city was that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm
Rich in Washington:

But who knows? I'm doing it even more by the seat of my pants than most shows I've done. I hope people don't hate it!
I feel like I'm in good company on the Sheena stream. It seems to be strange record heaven.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm
Rich in Washington:

I wonder if it's that guy's real name?
Avatar 12:47pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: You mean: Barf Art / Bar Fart?
  12:48pm
Mark R.:

If your show is "polarizing," that means for every person who hates, it, there's someone else who loves it. Just play what you like, as if you're among friends, which you are (mostly).
Avatar 12:48pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Mark: KBOO is in Portland, OR. It's an official sister station of FMU.
  12:49pm
Mark R.:

Yes, that name sounds made up, Tony! Oh cool, "official," eh? That means we can travel there without a passport!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm
Rich in Washington:

Thanks! I appreciate the encouraging words!
  12:50pm
Mark R.:

And Tony, you're in Portland, but you were once on FMU out of Jersey City, is that correct?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm
Rich in Washington:

Barfart. And then his label name! He must have name taunting trauma issues!
Avatar 12:51pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Mark: Yes, I did the show at the station for years, from 1990 to 2009. Then I moved out west.
  12:52pm
Dean:

One of my favorite real names belongs to a Renaissance Hungarian composer, Bálint Bakfark.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm
Rich in Washington:

@Mark R: Oh. I didn't see your comment @12:46. I am on KBOO on 2nd and 4th Thursday nights. You can listen online outside the Portland area at kboo.fm/listen or m.kboo.fm
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm
Rich in Washington:

I used to crack up that there's an instrument called a Sackbutt.
  12:55pm
Mark R.:

I didn't move to NJ til 2012, and was ignorant and naive of the wonders of FMU before that. Cool Rich, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm
Rich in Washington:

What would we do without WFMU? My virtual dial's been glued here since I can't remember when.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm
Rich in Washington:

I daresay Freeform Portland comes close to WFMU's musical spirit. KBOO, while I love it and remain loyal, is a bit split in its devotion to music, vs its hybrid of news and public affairs programming with music in the late afternoon/evening/overnight shift. A bit like KPFA.
  1:00pm
Mark R.:

Well it sounds like an NPR station, yes? FMU's lack of affiliation with anybody, even a university since whenever Upsala College went bankrupt, is truly unique.
Avatar 1:01pm
Tony Coulter:

It's more like a WBAI type station.
Avatar 1:04pm
Tony Coulter:

Meaning, not as slick and corporate as NPR.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
steveo:

This weekend I discovered WPKN while driving near Bridgeport, CT (I'm surprised I never noticed it before). It is also an independent non-profit formerly associated with a university. Heard some far out/good stuff on it too. They spell it "free-form" on their About Us page.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm
Ike:

I think Dave the Spazz is orig. from WPKN, yes?
Avatar 1:11pm
Tony Coulter:

Not sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm
steveo:

yeah! and he blogged about it! blog.wfmu.org...
  1:13pm
Mark R.:

Cool. I grew up in the radio wasteland of Detroit, wish we'd had the internet in those days!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm
Rich in Washington:

@Tony: I thought you wrote 'a WBIA type situation' and I about spittake'd my coffee!
Let's hope not!
Avatar 1:19pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: You mean the way they imploded? Nah, wasn't trying to hint at that!
  1:19pm
Dean:

Oh, man, WPKN is such a cool station. I used to stay with a friend in Fairfield in late May, when WPKN has an annual Zappa marathon. I'm no huge Zappa fan, but that one morning per year was always a delight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm
Ike:

Maryland and D.C. were also near-total radio wastelands before the days of streaming (a 10-watter from College Park and some bluegrass shows on WAMU pre-bluegrass-purge notwithstanding) and probably still are, which accounts for why FMU has so many fans who stream there. I've always wondered what qualities caused NJ, NY, MA, and much of CA to have so much better radio than, say, DC, MD, Las Vegas, etc., or if it was just mostly institutional accidents of fate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm
Rich in Washington:

KBOO used to do an all night Zappa/Mothers marathon on the Friday before Mother's Day. All the P Town Zappa collectors would come out of the woodwork and spin for an hour or so. It was amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm
Webhamster Henry:

KBOO was part of the KRAB nebula of community stations set up by Lorenzo Milam. KXRY "X-Ray" in Portland is also fun, Greasy Kid Stuff was there in its last incarnation.
My old friend Alec Cumming does shows on WPKN, they are fun!
Avatar 1:27pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Ike: Mark Farre (who did a great FMU show during the '90s) started out on a Washington, D.C., station that I think was once pretty good: WGTB, the Georgetown University station.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm
Rich in Washington:

Yes, the KRAB Nebula indeed. Also, one of the founding fathers was also Ernest Hood, now famous for his weird little LP called Neighborhoods. The FCC filing and other paperwork were all filled out and signed in Ernie's living room.
Avatar 1:29pm
Tony Coulter:

Wow! Didn't know that. Love that Ernest Hood LP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm
Rich in Washington:

Ernie's son is KBOO's head engineer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm
Rich in Washington:

This is spooky. Almost reminds me of early Cabaret Voltaire.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm
Michael 98145:

i was a KRAB subscriber from the donut shop days. met Mr Milam a few times. there is an archive in the Jack Straw studio in the University district.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm
Michael 98145:

... probably why i loves this station
Avatar 1:37pm
Tony Coulter:

Heya, Michael 98145!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm
Ike:

WGTB, as an FM station, was before my time. The Catholics at Georgetown didn't like its "strong left-wing sentiments, especially ads for the Washington Free Clinic", and sold it to the Univ. of DC for $1 in 1979 to get rid of it. Then UDC sold it to C-SPAN. So yes, now you can hear the *scintillating* sounds of C-SPAN Radio on what should be a good college station's frequency! The "real" WGTB exists online, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm
Michael 98145:

first time i've ever heard any of this
Avatar 1:40pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Ike: I mostly know of WGTB as a station where bands like the Muffins and Happy the Man often played live. Never heard the station back then, though -- only later on, via the tape-trader network
Avatar 1:46pm
Tony Coulter:

Oh, this Cal cassette is the one w/ the bowtied kiddie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm
steveo:

wacky-parsed as "bowtied kittie" and I'm like, that cat doesn't have a bowtie! (don't worry, I got it now)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm

Avatar 1:49pm
Tony Coulter:

Joy is not a big component of today's tapes.
Avatar 1:51pm
Tony Coulter:

One of our neighbor's cats, who's frequently in our house, wears a sporty blue bowtie.
Avatar 1:52pm
Tony Coulter:

Tho it often looks pretty disheveled.
Avatar 1:53pm
Tony Coulter:

(the bowtie, I mean -- not the cat.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm
steveo:

i was thinking of "business cat" but that's a regular necktie, unfortunately (knowyourmeme.com... )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm
Ike:

I'm surprised any cat will put up with that. Maybe it's a Portland thing?

Oh, right, Business Cat. I love Business Cat. Best meme ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm
steveo:

I like Cal. Probably because of the bowtie.
Avatar 1:59pm
Tony Coulter:

I suppose wearing a bowtie is no more annoying for a cat than wearing a collar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm

Avatar 2:14pm

Avatar 2:15pm
Tony Coulter:

Talking of meows, the Banana Head cassette (on now) is the one with the cat on the cover.
Avatar 2:16pm
crateslinger:

you mean the young jazz cat in the bowtie?
Avatar 2:16pm
Tony Coulter:

Nah, that cat is Cal.
Avatar 2:30pm
Tony Coulter:

It's funny how this 2009 cassette is so intentionally lo-fi -- unlike '80s cassettes, where the lo-fi-ness was mostly an unavoidable offshoot of having super-basic, cheap equipment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm
Rich in Washington:

I remember there being a lot of tonal loss and - you guessed it - TAPE HISS - from bouncing multitracks to stereo in order to accomodate more tracks. Every time you did it, it sounded more lo-fi. But we never said "kids are gonna dig this sound in the 2000s!".
Avatar 2:37pm
Tony Coulter:

I guess in general the whole lo-fi thing began just as better home-recording equipment finally became affordable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm
Rich in Washington:

I sure want another 4 track cassette machine but they're going for ridiculous prices now.
Avatar 2:37pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: This tape definitely added in tape hiss and noise.
Avatar 2:38pm
crateslinger:

I have an old fostex four track around here somewhere....
Avatar 2:39pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: Well, not so much hiss, I guess, but extraneous noise. I do get and appreciate the lo-fi aesthetic, tho.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm
steveo:

every cat is a criminal, all the sinners saints
Avatar 2:39pm
crateslinger:

Isn't it mostly the vocals that are crumbled on this? Guitar sounds like it's in the room with me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm
Rich in Washington:

Mine was a Fostex! I foolishly gave it to my sons, thinking I would never use it again and they more or less destroyed it.
Avatar 2:43pm
Tony Coulter:

@ crateslinger: True -- I was thinking of the added crackly noise most hearable at the beginning of some of the Banana Head tracks.
Avatar 2:48pm
crateslinger:

Yeah it was there. This conversation reminds me of the new Jonathan Richman song about how the old world sucks and why does everybody want to go back there.
Avatar 2:55pm

@Rich - that sucks but don't feel bad. You did a good dad thing.
