Thanks for breaking out this Pharoah record, reminds me I need to add it back into my regular listening rotation. Something about the bells (especially on "Prince of Peace") make a good sonic fit over the holiday season.

YettI Bob: thanks for the invaluable information. All I got from current town is Tom Petty, Bo Diddley, and some ska and emo-core bands to work w/ (and I'm just using musicians form at least 20+ years ago).

Sam Rivers, relocated from NYC to Orlando, I got to see him many times as an undergrad, as he was one of the few jazz greats that would play around. He brought Mathew Shipp and William Parker w/ him on one tour (first time I saw all of the aforementioned), and it brought me out of my indie ghetto when I was 19)

i clearly have biases to overcome, because i thought "oooh, this is nice", saw it was brubeck, and thought twice about commenting to that effect. so, in the name of overcoming biases: ooh, this brubeck thing is nice.

Must roll on. Superb selections today DJ Scott McDowell. Thank-you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am

@dk - I hear you and have felt similarly. I'm not one for straight jazz but at some point I realized that Dave Brubeck is actually pretty interesting and enjoyable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am

me too, northguineahills. what's great is that after literally decades of obsessive listening, i've still got preconceptions like that and the FMU DJs KEEP kicking them down.

clay plays some serious gems
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am
tim from champaign:

@ngh - which bands? Last year I did an experiment with myself to check out 90s major label albums that I had ignored back then (ie Butthole Surfers, Meat Puppets, etc) Some were better than I expected and some really stunk.

@tim: your aforementioned were respected, but not on my listening list until the last few years, the only one I can think of now is Hole, was I disassociated the personality of the lead singer.
