Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Ken From Hyde Park:

Good morning, Raga Radio fans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Little Danny:

Good morning Scott 'n' all. Lovely raga to tune in by
Avatar 9:27am Linda Lee:

what a beautiful piece of music. perfect for this morning.
Avatar 9:27am Linda Lee:

is this technically a raga?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Scott McDowell:

Very much so. It's often the first raga that students learn.
Avatar 9:31am Chris from DC:

This version is brilliant, too. I listen to this one a lot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Little Danny:

I've forgotten what the instrument variant is called, but Ustad is playing a kind of sitar with humongous resonators
Avatar 9:39am Chris from DC:

Avatar 9:41am mb:

Good morning free formers
Avatar 9:43am Linda Lee:

thank you Scott!
can anyone give me the rules for raga simplified?
Avatar 9:44am Linda Lee:

what's the main thing that differentiates it from other forms?
Avatar 9:47am Linda Lee:

i'm enjoying the musical shift too!
Avatar 9:48am βrian:

One fine day, I'll catch Grachan Moncur III.
Avatar 9:49am Linda Lee:

what a perfect set so far!
Avatar 9:53am βrian:

One has to appreciate the ba'alliteration.
Avatar 9:55am Sem:

Ba'ah humbug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Little Danny:

@linda: I'm sure someone with some actual musical theory can explain it better, but from my understanding, each raga provides a structure that allows musicians to improvise within. Also, there are scales and intervals that characterize each raga. It's a lifelong study for musicians. Huge question you asked!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am annie:

thanks for the well-timed FB alert!
Avatar 9:57am Linda Lee:

@Little Danny ~ yes, it was :-D

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am steveo:

Coincidentally, I just looked at a 2018 best albums article in the new yorker and this album (doug paisley) was on it. I was a bit surprised at how fmu-friendly that list was. ( www.newyorker.com... )

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Little Danny:

Petrusich is a standout anomaly for the New Yorker, which has had some absolutely incomprehensible music writers in recent memory
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Little Danny:

Avatar 10:28am Linda Lee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Scott McDowell:

Now that you've admitted to error, I'm wondering whether each song is the right song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am sphere:

there is no right song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Scott McDowell:

the right intention
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Little Danny:

@melinda: I hate to cast specific aspersions, but Hsu and Frere-Jones come to mind
  10:39am Listener Gregory:

I thought that in freeform there is no wrong song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am sphere:

pardon me didnt mean to be so serious. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am melinda:

@Danny interesting, I've never followed New Yorker music writing closely but the one "what the hell are you talking about?" moment I remember was a piece by Frere-Jones.
