Oh I thought it was Mop Top--I stand corrected. I really used to love The The.

You're never gonna get any objection from me on this one. Who was playing that demented one-note piano? Was it John Cale, I wonder?
Avatar 4:55pm
northguineahills:

I was a late comer to the Stooges (in my 20s), I first heard SY's version of "I want to be your Dog", but when I heard the original, the jingle bells made it perfect!

I read that wrong at first, I thought you said post-medication.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm
Stanley:

Heh heh, markreichard. You could say that the meditation took over from the medication.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm

Hi Dave - it will all find its way into the archive if all goes according to the usual cunning plan...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm
fred:

@markreichard@4:59: Sure, but the magic of radio is hearing something without planning it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm
Stanley:

I missed Black Uhuru's Red. Talking of which (alert: Tales of when I was younger man), that and Catch a Fire were the two cassettes that survived my 15 month trip around Africa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm
David D:

Stanley: Wow, where did the journey (and the cassettes) take you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm
David D:

I just checked and there are in fact no fill-ins scheduled for any WFMU stream for the next seven days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm
Stanley:

3 months in Egypt, 6 months in Sudan, 3 months Uganda/Kenya and 3 in Greece (resting). I crossed the Sahara overland 3 times (1982-83 - I was 22-23 years old)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm
David D:

Sounds amazing, Stanley - I guess you got to know the Nile well.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:22pm
Michael 98145:

@Stanley, whoa !!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm
Sem:

Catch a Fire. How great an idea. Loved that one, my introduction to Marley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm
Stanley:

Mainly on trucks but a few trains and a Nile steamer. Spent a fair of time in Egypt, picking up some Arabic then headed South, turned West at Khatoum and headed out to Darfur then the rains came which made further travel South impossible so retraced my route back to Egypt then a ship to Greece for some rest and replenished the purse by orange picking then, back down again this time to Southern Sudan, Uganda and Kenya. Ended up on an island in the Indian Ocean where my money ran out so had to get my father to wire me the fare to get home.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:29pm
chresti:

Stanley, sounds fantastic !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm
David D:

Orange picking then on to Kenya - I'm speechless.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm
David D:

This is John Dikeman bringing it on sax, by the way. (Twenty One 4tet)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm
Stanley:

David - that's how it was done in them days. You really didn't need much money, just a insane confidence that everything will be all right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm
Sem:

It's a travel book, Stanley, in a classic style "...headed out to Darfur then the rains came which made further travel South impossible so retraced my route back to Egypt then a ship to Greece for some rest and replenished the purse by orange picking..."
My reaction? TELL ME MORE.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm
Stanley:

Sem: I'll have to pad it out with all the crazy detail and foolishness. If I ever get the time, I might write my memoirs.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:43pm
Michael 98145:

@Stanley, you must!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm
David D:

Stanley: I'd love a copy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm
Stanley:

Thanks, Michael but I don't know if anyone would really be interested to read it. However, I am still in contact with two guys I met on the road and I might float the idea of a collaborative effort to help us all remember what happened.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:48pm
Michael 98145:

many of those places are probably impossible to visit this century.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm
Stanley:

You are right, Michael, so I suppose it was kind of special. But now that we are in/heading into our sixties, the ol' grey matter ain't what it used to be. I'll never forget that I was ill a lot of the time. This was before the days of bottled water, which every tourist seems to clutch wherever they go nowadays.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:56pm
chresti:

That's what I was thinking@ michael. We have a (female) friend who traveled/stayed in Afghanistan, sometimes alone, in the eighties.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm
Sem:

Been a lovely time, David. See you again next time, I hope. Ciao for now, Stanley, and all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm
David D:

Thanks, Sem, enjoy the Maritime evening!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:57pm
chresti:

See ya, Sem
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm
Stanley:

Time for me to turn in, too. By the way, I'm doing my best to keep away from the news of the bullshit that's going down here, in the UK. There is nothing I, personally, can do about it and if I follow it, I just fry my brain.
And thanks for letting me indulge in my memories.
Here's to Black Uhuru.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm
David D:

Thanks for sharing those memories, Stanley - have a good night...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 6:00pm

I have to do the same with the current buffoon in office, in order not to freak out @Stanley
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm
Stanley:

Good night David and thanks for your wonderful shows.
Good night all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm

In any case, there are much worse earworms to have. I get all sorts of strange ones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm
