This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Avatar 7:19pm Flash Strap:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm chresti:

Discogs describes this album as African and Rumba style
Avatar 7:21pm Flash Strap:

the cuban influence is strong here, for sure, but in a very unique way
Avatar 7:22pm TDK60:

.. apparently a lot of the lyrics are political, about national liberation and such. [?]
Avatar 7:29pm northguineahills:

Fouta Djallon is the north Guinea hills. Not what I named myself after, but out of pure coincidence, I found it while Google Earthing years ago....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm chresti:

Thanks Flash, for this field trip, I've only heard a couple Ras Michael related tracks.

..first heard Ras Michael on a great reggae show outta Pittsburgh (WYEP) in the '80s, R.M. the rootsiest stuff. I have the 'Give Thankx' J. Cliff album; check out opener 'Bongo Man' -grounation sound.

amazing guitar on the whole Freedom Sounds album. Earl 'Chinna' Smith
Avatar 7:42pm TDK60:

aha! didn't know it was Ras M.'s orig!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...some evenings you just listen to one FMU show after another & start feeling this mix of awe & gratitude & stuff...
Avatar 7:44pm Flash Strap:

@TDK: i think it might be more a traditional composition, not sure, but the version on Grounation is by Count Ossie – the connection is that Ras M is hugely influenced by Count Ossie, and partly because of this he plays the drums on Jimmy Cliff's cover. I was unclear before
Avatar 7:45pm Little Danny:

Thanks Evan! Brand new modem and we're flying high here in the twilight land. Hella relieved
Avatar 7:45pm TDK60:

Thanks Flash, I can see clearly now.
Avatar 7:46pm Flash Strap:

@TDK haha yes
Avatar 7:47pm Flash Strap:

So glad to hear it man, the Blue Flame Burns Tonight!

@Rev: yes let the gratitude flow through you, become the love of the music, praise the station
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I can't remember ever not being the love of Music.
Praise Jah Dobbs.
Avatar 7:50pm Flash Strap:

much like Ossie's trailblazing approach to nyabinghi – with Cedric Im Brooks' wild sax striking a searing contrast – Ras Michael usually has fiery psychedelic guitar in the mix. i admire this so
Avatar 7:51pm Flash Strap:

Willie Lindo on guitar for dadawah btw
Avatar 7:51pm Little Danny:

Wonderful and new to me like so much JA music. And gorgeous guitar here!
Avatar 7:52pm Flash Strap:

reminds me of the primal psych sound of Djin's guitar on Penetration, An Aquarian Symphony
Avatar 7:53pm Little Danny:

now frantically googling
Avatar 7:55pm Flash Strap:

the soul sound here, damn
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm chresti:

KCRW's Reggae Beat with Hank Holmes and Roger Steffens,, starting in 1980. The first half was Roger interviewing/talking (about Marley, mostly) and HH played Ska, Rock Steady, Roots, early Dancehall , during the other half ( taped a couple years of Hank's portion of the show)
Avatar 7:59pm Flash Strap:

very cool production from Jazzboe here
Avatar 8:00pm Flash Strap:

@chresti: i wonder if that's archived anywhere
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

this song really digs in. Earl Chinna Smith back on the guitar i believe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm chresti:

i used to accumulate Jamaican 7" discs ... lots
Avatar 8:28pm Franco Twinkie:

Good evening Flash, I usually don't consult outside council in such matters, but I feel you would offer sage advise in this matter: Would you butter a yam before you skin it and pop it oven, or save the buttering for when it is done and put it on the steamy soft center?
Avatar 8:28pm Little Danny:

"Tower of Sound." Love that.
Avatar 8:29pm Little Danny:

Thanks Evan! I'm glad too.

Hope this all will be archived, yes ...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm melinda:

This is fun.
Avatar 8:32pm TDK60:

a cool summer thing in NYC is a monthly reggae sound system partee, at Coney Island on the boardwalk. Many DJs take turns spinning 7"s thru a huge blasting system.
Avatar 8:32pm quinn:

that song had such a cool sound and then the wacky doot doot doos had me laughing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Michael 98145:

now, THAT i would love
Avatar 8:33pm Flash Strap:

@Franco: ya got me pal. i say after
Avatar 8:33pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 8:33pm Little Danny:

Thanks Chresti!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm melinda:

@Franco I would butter the inside
Avatar 8:33pm coelacanth∅:

man i hope i get to one of those this summer TDK
Avatar 8:34pm Flash Strap:

quinn in the Room! yeah that whole album vacillates between cool and goofy like that, it's incredible
Avatar 8:34pm coelacanth∅:

Franco, i wouldn't skin it at all but especially BEFORE popping it in the oven. huge mess!
Avatar 8:35pm Flash Strap:

this Cabildos – Italian label and bandleader, rec. in Miami with I think some Cuban personnel
Avatar 8:36pm Franco Twinkie:

Thanks Flash and Melinda. Buttering first seems like putting your sock over your shoes....wait a minute! she does that.
Avatar 8:36pm TDK60:

coel: called "Reggae on the Boardwalk." usually first Sun. of the month I think; you can just hang, go swimming, fly a kite, etc. free, donations liked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm chresti:

Is it crowded?
Avatar 8:38pm Flash Strap:

that sounds so good, TDK. I'm trying to get my ass up to NYC soon, for the record fair
Avatar 8:39pm Flash Strap:

Cuasares, a really cool Argentinian band
Avatar 8:40pm TDK60:

..usually maybe 200- 300 folks, mostly Jamaicans. Plenty of room on the boardwalk and beach.
Avatar 8:41pm TDK60:

I saw a short video of it, maybe on YouTube, that gives you a taste.
Avatar 8:43pm Flash Strap:

Juaneco's brand of cumbia he called "cumbia selvática" or jungle cumbia
Avatar 8:44pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks TDK -i don't know why i never knew about that
...i did go to a jamaican festival in prospect park once, many years ago (1990s) -that was fun
Avatar 8:46pm Flash Strap:

all-time great psychedelic cumbia by Manzanita y Su Conjunto here
Avatar 8:47pm Flash Strap:

need to get more of his stuff, see if it's all this good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm melinda:

What would you call this type of music? I really like it.
Avatar 8:52pm TDK60:

..and just recalled, about a half mile down the boardwalk other folks often have a salsa rekkid partee going too.
Avatar 8:53pm Flash Strap:

these last few tracks have been, broadly speaking, french library music. but as far as narrowing it down more, hard to say
Avatar 8:55pm Flash Strap:

the MP 2000 label is pretty sterling in terms of quality and coolness
Avatar 8:57pm Flash Strap:

love this Michel legrand record, what a charmer
Avatar 8:58pm Flash Strap:

dig those wild dubby echoes in the mix
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm melinda:

Me too! I must have heard it somewhere before. Sounds like 1960s swinging party scene film music.
Avatar 8:58pm Little Danny:

Wholly new to me
Avatar 8:59pm Little Danny:

@melinda: totally
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar 8:59pm TDK60:

great sounds for my next bachelor pad partee, have lots of groovy folks over...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm melinda:

This too sounds like 1960s swinging party scene music!
Avatar 9:00pm Flash Strap:

hey UM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Michael 98145:

i remember when dope smell was a feature of every reggae show. now it is a feature of every bus ride.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm doctorjazz:

Fine sounds, Flash, time to head into the wild blue yonder, thanks!
Avatar 9:02pm Little Danny:

I feel like the Luciani is somewhere on the horizon in this set
Avatar 9:02pm TDK60:

Michael: folks puff out there, just gotta keep eyes out for the cops and rangers drivin' by on their dune buggies. But I think they don't care much...
Avatar 9:03pm Flash Strap:

adios Doc, miss ya already
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm Uncle Michael:

Evan, that library music acquisition wound up being 133,753 tracks.
Avatar 9:03pm Flash Strap:

@LD: you know it buster
Avatar 9:04pm Little Danny:

UM: are you talking about the library record lots on eBay recently?
Avatar 9:04pm Flash Strap:

Damn Uncle
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Michael 98145:

wow. just wow...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Uncle Michael:

No, it was a digital acquisition. A big archive. Took about a month to shift it into my grip.
Avatar 9:07pm Little Danny:

UM: ah, okay, thought you were talmbout these: www.ebay.com...
Avatar 9:08pm Flash Strap:

god i love this record, super cool cover too
Avatar 9:08pm Flash Strap:

@LD: whoa
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm Uncle Michael:

Holy hell, Danny. That's in Kansas City. I could drive over and pick it up. Shipping charges my sweet fanny.
Avatar 9:10pm Flash Strap:

do it UM, for all the boys back home
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Uncle Michael:

I'm going to make an offer on that collection....I think. There were other lots from that seller?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm Uncle Michael:

I'm sorry you showed me that!
Avatar 9:13pm TDK60:

DJ Flash you know about this A.R. Luciani? The organ sounds fresh.
Avatar 9:13pm Little Danny:

At least one other lot, UM. Some really great titles in there, it's honestly a steal. A Dutch friend of mine who is a heavy library collector was agonizing (unsuccessfully) over how to procure it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm Uncle Michael:

I made a (lowball) offer.
Avatar 9:15pm Flash Strap:

@TDK: I know it's fresh as hell, yeah! i've heard a few of his records but that's my favorite by far
Avatar 9:15pm hyde:

just catching up with the playlist. big wow on that ebay lot!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm Uncle Michael:

I hope it becomes mine, hyde.

Avatar 9:27pm Flash Strap:

really is - pretty great LP all around too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Uncle Michael:

Umm...the lowball offer was accepted. They're mine.
Avatar 9:28pm hyde:

haha, that's great!
Avatar 9:28pm Flash Strap:

between Gil Evan's version of his own composition, this one, and Robert Wyatt's sublime bizarro take on it, Las Vegas Tango is a blessed piece of work
Avatar 9:28pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 9:29pm hyde:

lots of Hinky Dinky library music coming soon
Avatar 9:30pm coelacanth∅:

nice UM! Congratulations! You're The Winner!!
  9:30pm Dean:

Psst, guys! I been making some serious coin lately running an operation online, conning who knows who (some guy in the Midwest is a repeat customer) with offers to sell "digital" files of "tracks." I know it's fraud, but it's so fun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm Uncle Michael:

I hope I stay happy about winning.
Avatar 9:31pm Little Danny:

Oh man that's so great UM. I'd suggest taking some extra cash with you, I've a feeling they'd be willing to unload whatever's left of the collection (aside from yer lot) for cheap
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm melinda:

Congrats UM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm Uncle Michael:

Psst, Dean...the only people that got paid for those tracks was my ISP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm Uncle Michael:

That's good advice, Danny...I'll be prepared for contingencies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm passiflora:

of course I missed that part, was on a call! :italian-flowers:

one of 'em, for sure!
Avatar 9:43pm burke:

Hi Burke! yeah this record gets overlooked I think, it's easily in the convo with like Eberhard Schoener but you don't see it mentioned as much
Avatar 9:46pm burke:

Hi Flash Strap! Happy to be listening in real time, for a change.
Avatar 9:47pm Flash Strap:

i'm very happy too, always nice to see your face in the chats

  9:54pm Dean:

Serious? You mean cellular data overage? I was joking about the relatively low bandwidth of good ol' reliable T1s. You joking, too?
Avatar 9:55pm Flash Strap:

extremely refreshing finale on this Brainticket track, btw - ears peeled if you wanna experience that relief
