This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hello Passiflora!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm passiflora:

was carrying on the 'stereo' theme, then the title changed XD
Avatar 5:47pm Flash Strap:

ha sorry just a placeholder while I thought of a stupider title
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm passiflora:

that's what I get for being early! anyway, looking forward
Avatar 5:52pm Flash Strap:

an invaluable window into the creative process
Avatar 6:52pm Flash Strap:

about to start, how's everybody doin'?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Have twang will explore !
Avatar 7:03pm Flash Strap:

Hi Rev Rab! It really cracks me up that Duane Eddy's closest thing to a proper surf record is water skiing themed
  7:03pm iArthurA:

Doin' fantastic! Stoked for some jams and settled into the last three hours at a bookshop in NYC
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

A lot of the great Gittar Instumentals were by land-locked folk...
Avatar 7:04pm Flash Strap:

Hi Arthur, great to have you on board
Avatar 7:05pm hyde:

hiya. a little burnt out tonight. likely will fade out halfway through with the tunes on and will wake up in my clothes.
Avatar 7:07pm Flash Strap:

Hi Hyde! get the rest you need brother
Avatar 7:07pm Flash Strap:

nothing but vinyl tonight btw
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@hyde: ..a common occurrence w/ LoungeMusic, isn't it?...
Avatar 7:10pm Flash Strap:

love the guitar on that Leni Okehu track
Avatar 7:10pm hyde:

@RevRab perhaps!
Avatar 7:13pm Flash Strap:

just an unusually raw sound for Hawaiiana at that time i think
Avatar 7:13pm Flash Strap:

really cool guitar on this Lord Cody too
Avatar 7:13pm hyde:

it's vinyl all right!
Avatar 7:14pm Flash Strap:

proof's in the poppin
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Of course - I always go on about Surf's importance to the development of Eelektric Gittar as it became
- in that space between Elvis in the Army & Beatles in USA when nothing supposedly happened...
Avatar 7:17pm Flash Strap:

absolutely rev - i also think it's the bridge between one generation's exotica and the next's psych, which is usually portrayed as a total sea change
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yup. A big takeaway for me from this whole Program!
Avatar 7:19pm Flash Strap:

guitar here almost taking on a psychedelic cumbia quality, imo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Not the 'goof' calypso is 'supposed' to be...
Avatar 7:22pm Flash Strap:

Eloise Lewis is just too cool to be real
Avatar 7:24pm Little Danny:

Hey everybody hey
Avatar 7:26pm Flash Strap:

Hey LD!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Michael 98145:

never have surfed, but happy to be here
Avatar 7:28pm Flash Strap:

yikes terrible transition, apologies
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm Michael 98145:

this is a -classic- lounge piano number :)
Avatar 7:30pm Flash Strap:

Hi Michael!
Avatar 7:31pm Flash Strap:

  7:33pm quinn:

Pretty moody here in the room tonight
Avatar 7:34pm Flash Strap:

Hi Quinn! a moody mist or a cloud of dust
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Deffo hints of BeachBoys 'In My Room'...
Avatar 7:37pm Flash Strap:

there is simply nothing 'surf' about this wedges record

but i dig the contradiction, i think it's groovy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...WestSideStory...
Avatar 7:37pm hyde:

this is super cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm Michael 98145:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm doctorjazz:

Hello !This is very cool! (The Wedges )
Avatar 7:39pm Little Danny:

OMG I love budget labels
Avatar 7:39pm Flash Strap:

Hi Doc!

I'm glad we can all dig the Wedges here, not everyone is so generous as you can see: me4christ64.wixsite.com...
Avatar 7:40pm Little Danny:

Vibes cue docjazz
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Figure they didn't know TheBeatles were arriving in months
...& then the Fabs would sound like this on 'When I'm 64' in three years...
Avatar 7:41pm Little Danny:

Haha, surf dudes are absolutely humorless
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm Michael 98145:

{ heh. some folks need to get over themselves }
Avatar 7:41pm northguineahills:

cool, a Hawai'ian stereograph!
Avatar 7:43pm Flash Strap:

Hi NGH!
Avatar 7:43pm Little Danny:

To be fair, it *isn't* surf music. But the cash-in packaging is part of the charm. And the music is terrific and mad.
Avatar 7:44pm Flash Strap:

I only read that review (?) because it was the ONLY thing I could find on the Wedges. I won't pretend i wasn't disappointed it wasn't some pure true surf, but i totally agree with you LD
Avatar 7:46pm Flash Strap:

would love to know the wedges lineup tho
Avatar 7:51pm quinn:

oh, i liiiike this
Avatar 7:52pm Flash Strap:

I picked this up in France but only started really listening to it the other day and it's been blowing my mind, one of my favorite Bastien albums, actually
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm doctorjazz:

Hey ,LD!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm melinda:

hola explorers!
Avatar 8:03pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Flash and Explorers
Avatar 8:04pm coelacanth∅:

(not happy about missing Pierre Bastien)
Avatar 8:07pm Flash Strap:

Hi Melinda! Hi Coelacanth! - might be a little more Bastien at the end of the show, if things go as I imagine
Avatar 8:11pm Flash Strap:

3 Suns are so nice man
Avatar 8:12pm Little Danny:

They sure are
Avatar 8:13pm hyde:

agreed
Avatar 8:13pm Flash Strap:

up next, we're gonna have a little flute-o-the-nose
Avatar 8:15pm coelacanth∅:

this is the weirdest version of flight of the bumblebee i've ever heard
Avatar 8:16pm Little Danny:

Awesome, never heard this Kirk before
Avatar 8:17pm Flash Strap:

@C: seriously is!
Avatar 8:17pm coelacanth∅:

(weird enough that they didn't call it that. hmm)
Avatar 8:17pm Flash Strap:

This is a great Kirk LP!
Avatar 8:18pm Flash Strap:

I guess it's a butterfly being bugged by a bumblebee, is the idea
Avatar 8:18pm northguineahills:

What Evan said...
Avatar 8:19pm Little Danny:

Incredible performance here. People forget how influential his overblown style was at the time
Avatar 8:20pm coelacanth∅:

people get caught up with the novelty but he really had some Brilliant musical concepts
Avatar 8:22pm coelacanth∅:

Evan i'll listen to that butterfly track again (i was going to anyway) ...what you say makes sense though
  8:22pm JtotheK:

Great Kirk record. I dig the Aretha and Stevie covers... hi Flash, hi everyone.
Avatar 8:29pm Flash Strap:

Sorry, my computer was fritzing out for a while there
Avatar 8:30pm Flash Strap:

i'm back now, thankfully i had a nice long song to deal with it
Avatar 8:30pm coelacanth∅:

hey JK
Avatar 8:32pm Flash Strap:

Hi JK! great to see you
Avatar 8:32pm Flash Strap:

i love this LP
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm doctorjazz:

Missed Kirk, awww..
Like this Herbie Mann... I've got a long standing negative impression of Mann, always seemed like easy listening , FMU DJ's are disabusing me of that impression.
Avatar 8:34pm Flash Strap:

he's got a LOT of material to persuade you of the notion - one i held myself for forever - but when he's good he's great, and he was more good than not for a long time
Avatar 8:37pm coelacanth∅:

i had to look. thought maybe this one wouldn't be called "hall of the mountain king"!
Avatar 8:37pm Flash Strap:

not sure about this LP, who's on what, etc. very untidy liner notes
Avatar 8:37pm Flash Strap:

@C: haha yeah exactly
Avatar 8:38pm coelacanth:

great version!
Avatar 8:40pm coelacanth:

-and agree with drjazz about Mann. someone on fmu played an excellent Herbie Mann track a few weeks ago, made me reconsider.
Avatar 8:41pm Flash Strap:

he's got so many great records
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm passiflora:

the cracklies are making me tingly
  8:44pm slawooy:

Where can I send you a traditional Serbian version of ‘Uska Dara’? I dig it at this tempo but there is a whole new world concealed in the version I’d like to send you a link to
Avatar 8:44pm Flash Strap:

Man I cleaned these records before the show too. These are the true crackles, alas, for better and worse, in sickness and health
Avatar 8:44pm Flash Strap:

Hi Slawooy - do you have my email?
Avatar 8:44pm Flash Strap:

i'd love to hear that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm doctorjazz:

The crackles give it character (easy for me to say, hate it when I get them on a new purchase). Flash, how do you clean your vinyl ?
Avatar 8:51pm Flash Strap:

let me turn that question around on you Doc, feelin exposed here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm doctorjazz:

(I'm a lazy bum... I have an old VPI 16.5 vacuum cleaner , but hardly ever use it.. .)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm doctorjazz:

Ready to go home, but gotta wait for Lateef.
Avatar 8:56pm Flash Strap:

I use soft clean towels, alcohol and distilled water mostly, is that cleaner pretty cool? I've always wished I had something like that but i always just use my record collection budget to buy more records
Avatar 8:56pm Flash Strap:

Roy Brooks Jr on drums here
Avatar 8:58pm Flash Strap:

if you can spare the extra 4 minutes doc, i got some more kirk to close the set after this
Avatar 8:58pm coelacanth∅:

i still have my discwasher brush from c.1979, before they sold out to rca (?) who turned it into crap. i make the fluid with a (discwasher) bottle (10 oz.?) full of distilled water and a couple drops of photoflo.
if they're terrible, like caught in a flood terrible, i might use soap and water. then still discwasher before every play.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm chresti:

Hello! I was listening on the phone while sitting in traffic, leaving downtown LA.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm doctorjazz:

www.stereophile.com...

Some recipes here... Distilled water ,isopropyl alcohol, and some sort of surfactant is the basic idea. Photoflo seems to be a popular one.
Avatar 9:01pm Flash Strap:

good hygiene, that
Avatar 9:02pm Flash Strap:

Hi Chresti! miss ya when you're not here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm doctorjazz:

More Kirk... I'm never going getting out of here. Better take you to the car.
Thanks Flash!
Avatar 9:04pm Little Danny:

Don't go nowhere no how, Doc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm chresti:

Jury duty is preventing me from listening to my favorite shows...for a few weeks, unfortunately.
Avatar 9:05pm Little Danny:

How's the trial going chresti?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm doctorjazz:

Can't sleep in the office (well, I could ,but I'd really rather not ..). I'll listen in the car get back on the boards when I get home
Avatar 9:08pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar 9:24pm northguineahills:

Ugghh, FL unemployment is so Byzantine, I still don't know what to do. I might actually have to call a human. (GOP states make it as hard as possible, fuckers).
Avatar 9:28pm Flash Strap:

fuck, NGH. I hate that. what a stupid society
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm chresti:

Hi Little Danny- it's grueling and mind bendingly boring...
Avatar 9:32pm northguineahills:

NY, was easy 6 years ago, fill the online form, and after two weeks, go to a common sense class, and that was it... Out in 8 mins, thanks Evan! Digging!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm chresti:

It's much like being in a car for 7 hours
Avatar 9:33pm Flash Strap:

Sorry to hear that chresti! So... not a juicy murder trial then?
Avatar 9:52pm Little Danny:

(Apologies if you've discussed this elsewhere)
Avatar 9:53pm Little Danny:

I have deep affection for exotica of such high lush drama
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm chresti:

nah It's crazy, not juicy

Thanks Flash! Beautiful!
Avatar 9:55pm Flash Strap:

much like the other Alfred Newman And Ken Darby Hawaii record, Ports Of Paradise, which we talked about once before i believe, this is oddly a deep affair
Avatar 9:56pm Flash Strap:

i have 2 versions of this, and this pressing has the far better sound quality. the other has somewhat better art. they both have booklets
Avatar 9:57pm Little Danny:

Much like their other collab, indeed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm chresti:

Wow glad I could hear this...
Avatar 9:59pm Flash Strap:

actually this one has better art: img.discogs.com...

than this one: img.discogs.com...
