This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

kava as in "kava kava"? (if so) it was very fashionable in the "health food" industry in the 90s. people were buying "standardized" capsules for anxiety for mucho dinero.
apparently it really works, but you need a lot of it in that form; and my brain & instinct tells me it'd be more effective in a more natural state than a standardized extract.

been reading. wikipedia says poi is not synonymous for taro but a preparation made primarily from taro, and the cooking time is hours.
i think my gf and i cooked it for 20 minutes max. maybe that's why it was so starchy. also we didn't try it in any sweet preparations at all.

I used to try those capsules, @coelacanth∅, either going into or coming out of work at a small mall bookstore. they didn't seem to work for me. later, I visited my friend in south florida, who was in rehab. they hung out at this dark, tropical cafe that served it in wooden bowls
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm

passiflora i knew 2 rattly people who used it. one i worked with at the store so he got it wholesale, and his friend -so, same...if i remember correctly they each took at least 10 caps/day. (which at wholesale was probably close to $10./day, and maybe not too good for the liver)
but they both swore it worked; and it seemed to.

i have always thought the isolation of the "active ingredient" in herbs/foods was bullshit. it makes sense to me that there'd be cofactors present in the plant that work together with the supposed active ingredient - that get left behind in these preparations.
there may be exceptions of course, but i'd sooner try the kava drink.

But everything aside from taro is secondary to the inside, which is soft and creamy. Some versions seem to have a slight Chinese curry tone.

hmm. i've never made dumplings and won't get it right the first time. it's a bit of a commitment to learn to make good dumplings and i don't think i'm ready!

They're also called 'wu gok' if that helps you track them down. I bet a vegetarian dim sum place would have a nice veg version.

i had a tibetan friend who made amazing vegetarian dumplings, but she's left the country. i'll look around. i wont find 'em near where i live though.

@coelacanth∅ I love to cook, but I wouldn't try dim sum if my life depended on it. Though this recipe makes it sound easy www.afoodieworld.com...

Good reinforcement for my self-imposed shrimp embargo in there too looks like.

yeah i saw that. i'm not a big shrimp fan anyway, and they're not great for ya.
that recipe does seem doable though. the taro is in the flour for the shell -not what i was expecting!

okay, i bookmarked it. the other thing is -will i go through the trouble to learn something new in the kitchen if it's just for me? (as you have a self-imposed shrimp embargo i have a self-imposed relationship embargo)

Ha, nice. Relationships can be worse for you than shrimp, it's true. If it helps motivate you, the texture is amazing. They're not good cold though. Do you have a guinea pig embargo?

beautiful show, thanks for that

Yeah, you might be better off with perogies for such purposes. Taro turns to glue when it cools off. And the fringe wouldn't make it to the park :)
