Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I still have no idea why they wear pearl buttons
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

The practice of wearing clothes decorated with mother-of-pearl buttons[1] is first associated with Henry Croft (1861-1930), an orphan street sweeper who collected money for charity. At the time, London costermongers (street traders) were in the habit of wearing trousers decorated at the seams with pearl buttons that had been found by market traders. In the late 1870s, Croft adapted this to create a pearly suit to draw attention to himself and aid his fund-raising activities.[2][3] In 1911 an organised pearly society was formed in Finchley, north London.[1]

Croft's funeral in January 1930 was attended by 400 followers[1] and received national media coverage.[4] In 1934 a memorial, referring to him as "The original Pearly King", was unveiled in St Pancras Cemetery, and in a speech to mark the occasion he was said to have raised £5,000 for those suffering in London's hospitals.[5]

Some of the solo Syd stuff is difficult to listen to. His pain and confusion comes across in the songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm

His solo stuff almost feels like exploitation at times :-(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm

and yet I was quite obsessed with "the Madcap Laughs" for a time. Just found it an amazing and powerful experience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Both is true I guess...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm
Rich in Washington:

There was a great doc about Syd that had the present Floyd members practically breaking down recounting his visit in the 70s. They had at the time thought Syd had intentionally flaked the band off, but now/then realized that he was desperately mentally ill.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is one of the sweetest chapters in a children's book ever. It's so pure. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm
Rich in Washington:

I think there were people eager to exploit Syd, since he'd been a huge star with Floyd, and also his friends who really wanted to help him climb out of it, I think. Esp. Gilmour and Mason.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

There was that Rolling Stone interview - last year I believe - where Nick Mason says how young they all were and they couldn't cope with his illness :-(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm
Rich in Washington:

Yeah, I didn't get the reference until much later. Became a fan of the Wind in the Willows series via that wonderful animated version from the 70s/80s(?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm

Yes! Gosh! I remember that :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm
Rich in Washington:

I wonder if any of the Stones ever had a similar epiphany about Brian Jones?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm

Someone also said that Waters and Gilmour alway saw to that Syd got his royalties. No mean feat, considering what a shell game labels play with artists...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm
