Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

This week:

Elder Kimzilla needs the essence of young Emily to stay young and keep the spring in her step. So, during tonight’s show Emily will become Kimzilla’s Blood Girl or “Miss-sociate” and transfer her young energetic plasma into Kimzilla’s veins. Listen before your very ears as Kimzilla feels the positive effects of the transfer and can recite Jane Eyre and do handstands with no hands!
*Disclaimer, everything you hear tonight is suspect.

Hi Kim, Emily and fellow lifers! one my most favorite shows is Silicon Valley! I am listening but I am going to try to think of another Silicon Valley inspired story, lol!

yeah, i just want to age gracefully and then take a dirt nap
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm

Yeah I don't need to hear much more. As a biologist, I do believe there are factors in youthful blood that could be beneficial to some older people however the risks (as depicted in the Silicon Valley episode described) out way the potential benefits for most healthy older recipients. I would suggest they identify, isolate and purify the beneficial factors instead.

@Vanessa Bikes- I can't wait to hear your thoughts on clinical trials, and the concern with the placebo effect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
Vanessa bikes:

there are always new diseases that get spread by blood banks, HIV is a history lesson. You get blood transfusion because you need it now because you hope it might make you feel more vitality.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm
melinda:

@queems I knew what you meant. I'm not doing well for 47 but I'm working on it. Usually when people say someone is aging gracefully it's a way of saying they're not their previously youthful self but they don't look like an old hag either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm
dale:

31 queems? wow - make the next 31 (and more) worth it. i wasted a lot just working for a quote career unquote.

I dispute the term patient, it sounds like customers for most.
Avatar 7:27pm

@Vanessa Bikes, I was wondering about that. How much the plasma is tested for things other than just being young plasma.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm

@dale yeah, that's what i'm trying to figure out. already falling into that hole but it's not too late to turn it around

Sounds like the good doctor has come up with a viable way to transfuse the savings of the elderly into his lab coat pocket. By the way, isn't Ambrosia a fruit salad with little marshmallows which is adored by older folks????

@ChrisVB medical vampirism! Good term.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm
melinda:

I used to eat ambrosia at Luby's cafeteria.
  7:43pm
Listener Robert:

Seems like an idea so obvious, why'd it take this long to be tried? Start with unfractionated plasma, see which conditions are affected, then start fractionating to find which fractions are effective for what. In the meantime you're getting a cash flow established and interest to help the work along.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm
ultradamno:

I look forward to the incessant ads for this that will inevitably support all 24 hour news channels
  7:44pm
JakeGould:

Scammy nonsense. The benefits are temporary. But if this guy and others like him can fleece money from rich people? Fine with me!
  7:44pm
Kiriyama:

I wonder how this would affect blood related autoimmune diseases such as IgA or vasculitis.
  7:45pm
Listener Robert:

JG, how do you know the benefits are temporary, when you don't even know what benefits there are?
Avatar 7:46pm
duckiekiller:

Avatar 7:47pm
Richard S:

It's definitely interesting and promising. I'd say we keep an open mind about it (but not so open that our brains fall out).
  7:47pm
Listener Robert:

A priori Kiriyama, I wouldn't expect much effect in immune modulation, because you can only get so much in the way of cytokines from one person to another via a plasma donation.
Avatar 7:48pm

@ Richard hahaha

Avatar 7:49pm

Is Emily really giving Kimzilla a transfusion?!

Can someone please bring me up to date on what we are talking about? Is it called Ambrosia?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Remember to recite the disclaimer: "Don't try this at home!"
  7:52pm
Listener Robert:

Yeah, well, the people at Hastings are professional red flag raisers.

The problem described therein is one had by every clinician-investigator. Someone submitting a study to an IRB that I serve on had the same question. It's routine.
  7:52pm
P-90:

Important to note here that there are none of the scanty claimed benefits or profuse speculative benefits from this that haven’t been proven to be attainable by existing, better-understood methods. Just sayin’, from a medical perspective...

I will just stick to donating blood to those who need it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm

Some people would rather spend thousands of dollars and sit on their asses than to exercise regularly and change their diet.
  7:54pm
Andrea in Jersey City:

Thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm
Vanessa bikes:

Kim, I work with blood product that are tested the same and we use "universal precautions", meaning we assume any blood product is contaminated no matter the prior testing. tests have false negatives all the time.
  7:56pm
JakeGould:

Everything that Emily is saying is on point.

But also think about this: If most of the people being targeted by this are old, the scam is just in that. The reality is a person in their 60s feeling “happy” about this just speaks to a placebo effect and the fact that if/when these people die, who is the ultimately beneficiary?
  7:56pm
Jeremy B:

I agree with a lot of what Emily is saying... and I think what rubs the public the wrong way is that they have established a business model before they've published studies that proves it's safe and effective
Avatar 7:57pm
Richard S:

@I am the Upsetter: I donate platelets about once a month.
  7:57pm
Kiriyama:

Listener Robert, I actually wrote a cogent response but Android ate it. it needs a Lithium Ion transfer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm
Vanessa bikes:

okay all the time is an exaggeration. but false negatives happen, why risk it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm
queems:

i'm not allowed to donate blood because i take anticoagulants but i wonder if that also affects plasma
  7:58pm
Listener Robert:

You better be compensated for donating plasma, because plasmapheresis takes time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm
melinda:

@Jeremy yeah that seems to be the problem.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

I achieved the 5-gallon donation level and was informed that I had some hepatitis detected (about 20 years ago). So no more donating from me. Must have been a false positive since I don't have hepatitis symptoms.

Bottom line: they are pushing to market their “product” first, and speculating that wonderful benefits will be found as they grow their customer base over time and research the effects. That is just backwards, period.
