Hey Fleep - thanks for adopting the stream!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm

Yes, I believe the song simply refers to an "Egyptian woman" - the ı without the dot in Turkish is something between an i and u, I believe.

GRITS! I think I know that song.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 3:33pm
Cmurtha:

it's kinda like the i in cousin euh. And yes you are correct. I told steve this I translated some of the lyrics on Clay's show. Though truth be told the object of Ottoman love poetry is usually a young man or boy, (won't get into the history or logic of this) but as Turkish has no gender the Egyptian can be a woman/man. Which is why the song üskadar'a gider iken is about a [male] scribe.

Loving the scholarly Miserlou discussion, and soundtrack.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 3:53pm
Cmurtha:

I always just say its "Ottoman" it angers everyone equally and is almost always more accurate to where things actually come from, since nationalism/nation states are very, very modern inventions. So, like is X Greek, Turkish, or Arab etc.? Its Ottoman.

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:00pm
Cmurtha:

@north I think Hilal Inalcik found that Osman =/= Uthman as most people think/as is still held at large. I think he found some scant evidence that it was maybe an Oghuz name the predated the turks entering the M.E so perhaps as Tengri intended?

I have not listened to it in ages, and I know in the last years both Leslie Peirce (my old mentor) and like a month or so ago Jane Hathaway (Current mentor) talked on it. I gotta give Jane's talk at least a listen but WFMU has monopolized a lot of my listening time

@Cmurtha: I was listening to Jane this morning. There is also an episode just talking about Ottoman poetry about women. The Oghuz theory is the one I usually read bandied about....

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:05pm

What a coincidence. How is her talk? I've not read the new Book on Eunuchs so I can't comment on it. Though, because of her I made sure to go an walk to Eyup to see Beşir Ağa's grave.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:06pm
Yvang:

@TDK60: sure it is!
Avatar 🚂 4:07pm
northguineahills:

@Cmurtha: she actually was talking about her book on eunuchs. Her talk was nice. But as you know, the whole podcast leans a little on the dry academic side (which I like).
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:10pm
Cmurtha:

@north She's really wry in person. So, I feel like depending on how it was set up she could probably subvert things while sticking to their format. Like I said I will check it out when I'm not busy doing my own research/listening to WFMU. Who was doing the talk on women in Ottoman Poetry? Kalpakli? Or someone else?

@Cmurtha: also recommended, the History Bulgarian History podcast, it does a more chronological history based narrative of Anatolia, especially the Ottoman era...
Avatar 🚂 4:44pm
northguineahills:

also of interest in the Ottoman History podcast is the episodes of post-Ottoman--pre-nationalism self-identity/identity politics of the post-Ottoman territories,
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:45pm
Cmurtha:

@north I will have to check it out, my Balkans knowledge is far less strong than my M.E knowledge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm
David D:

That sounds very interesting, actually, NGH. Is it a chronological overview of the empire?
Avatar 🚂 4:54pm
northguineahills:

@David: Yes, it's breadth of anything relating to the Bulgarian people/culture includes everything (including the rest of Europe), but especially the Ottoman Empire. Heck, even the Saffavid Persians.

my focus on my BA in History was on the Balkans (for no other reason then I knew nothing about them, I'm a generic English/Scottish American).
