Avatar 12:00pm fred:

Good afternoon Mayuko and listenerds
Avatar 12:01pm Sem:

Hello and good afternoon, Mayuko, fred.

Happy belated birthday, sir.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm chresti:

Hello Mayuko and playful dizzy friends!
  12:02pm rbrt:

what is up
  12:03pm rbrt:

i love this dB
Avatar 12:04pm fred:

re: what you said about name pronunciation last week, I talked about just that with listener Jeroen a couple of weeks ago. Mine is an easy one, as far as European languages go, some drop the first 'r' and/or add a letter, but it basically sounds the same. Jeroen's trickier, but I then brought a local Jérôme into that conversation, and now they're planning to do a show together next month
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm chresti:

Happy Birthday
  12:05pm rbrt:

who's birthday?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm chresti:

Not sure, it has to be someone's birthday...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Mayuko; Mayukolings
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Dropof Goldensun:

Greetings Mayuko and Listenerds!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Dropof Goldensun:

I see we lost our "not so black" black background.
Avatar 12:13pm Mayuko:

Hellos, my radio family fred and Sem!

Yeah! Happy birthday!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm chresti:

That's great, @fred
Avatar 12:13pm Mayuko:

Hi chresti, rbrt, coel & Dropof! Glad to have you all here!!
  12:13pm rbrt:

Happy Birthday!
Avatar 12:14pm fred:

I liked that Machida Machizo from Shifukudan track. And a nice change of pace after that, from the 80s I guess?
  12:15pm rw:

Saturday morning Vertigo! Glad it's someone's birthday today. It's a nice one!
Avatar 12:19pm Mayuko:

@fred Good, so I was not exactly mispronouncing your name the whole time. that would have been too bad.
  12:19pm rbrt:

This Rvng Intl label has been putting out some cool stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hello, Mayuko and vertigophers. Going to hike into town to stop at the library. Nice to have the phone app for trips like that.
Avatar 12:20pm Mayuko:

@rw yeah! whoever that is if s/he is in NYC it's very nice weather, great day for the bday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm coelacanth∅:

yes Happy Birthday!
...my third birthday wish in 13-14 hours to the wfmu comment board -only the other 2 times i knew who i was wishing it to!
  12:24pm rbrt:

veggie orchestra! , I wonder if they are actually playing dried vegtables
Avatar 12:24pm Mayuko:

@fred yah, Machida Machizo had been around since 80's doing punk rock. So he and Mokugyo are actually from pretty much the same time period. Though Machizo is still active and goes by the name Machida Koh now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Dropof Goldensun:

Happy Birthday to whoever you are!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm coelacanth∅:

not dried vegetables; fresh vegetables.
  12:26pm rbrt:

@chresti that sounds awesome
Avatar 12:26pm Mayuko:

Hi Ken! Happy Saturday hiking to you! Glad my show can accompany you.
Avatar 12:28pm Mayuko:

Yah, I heard it's fresh vegetables. I believe their show is always followed by a cooking show and then veggie tasting hour. I would love to go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm chresti:

  12:29pm rbrt:

@Mayuko are you serious lol?
Avatar 12:29pm Mayuko:

and I hope it's always fresh vegetables from local farmers and the farmers would be there at the show too with a little veggie market.
Avatar 12:30pm Mayuko:

I actually don't really know anything about Vegetable Orchestra. This is all wishful thinking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Yeah, it's hard to beet Vegetable Orchestra!
  12:33pm rbrt:

"....organic instruments and sound generators which usually only last for one concert or one day in the studio..."
  12:34pm rbrt:

you just compost everything after recording
Avatar 12:34pm Mayuko:

What! No eating?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Dave in Vermont:

they make soup after concerts
Avatar 12:35pm Mayuko:

You can't just beet up vegetables like that and not eating em!
  12:35pm rbrt:

I mean I guess you could eat them
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Dave in Vermont:

they go shopping and carve the veggies day of
  12:36pm rbrt:

I really want to see this lol
Avatar 12:36pm Mayuko:

@Dave in V oh! that's good to know. & thanks for tuning in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm coelacanth∅:

as teenagers we always carried vegetables or fruit to make pipes of. apples, carrots, potato -so if the cops came we'd quickly eat it and there'd be no evidence.
Avatar 12:36pm fred:

I once saw Stefania Pedretti (from Ovo) do a show as ?Alos where she sliced vegetables on a board set up with contact mics, played bass while they were cooking, and finally inviting someone from the audience to share the meal with her
Avatar 12:37pm Mayuko:

@coelacanth∅ wow that's so funny!!
  12:37pm rw:

Ha! The video says they make soup from the carvings and the smell of the soup is part of the performance. The beaten up veggies don't look so appetizing. Seems like a fun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm chresti:

I wonder if beeting vegetables affects the flavor
  12:38pm rw:

CC, how's the apple-weed?
  12:39pm rbrt:

answers all my questions thank you lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Dropof Goldensun:

coelacanth∅, ah yes, the apple pipe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm coelacanth∅:

rw the apple was best for making a nice cool smoke inhalation; but i usually carved a carrot just because the shape lent itself to a pipe better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm chresti:

@coel, the vegetable pipe would also have psychoactive properties
  12:41pm rbrt:

hey @fred they are playing in france
07.06.2019 Brest (FR)
Avatar 12:42pm fred:

@rbrt: A long time ago, I saw a dance show by Liat Dror and Nir Ben Gal where they made bread as part of it, cooked it in ovens in the back of the stage, then shared it as we walked out. The smell was definitely a part of the show
  12:43pm rbrt:

if there is bread I'm in
Avatar 12:45pm fred:

@rbrt: Brest is out of my range: I don't go to places I can't walk home from
Avatar 12:45pm Mayuko:

@fred They should start food music festival together with Neubauten Blixa Bargeld as the headliner, his live cooking show with no music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm chresti:

This Swans vocals reminds me of T Rex a little
Avatar 12:47pm Mayuko:

I obviously can't really check now but this should be it
Blixa Bargeld is cooking risotto
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm chresti:

Risotto requires much stirring
Avatar 12:50pm northguineahills:

Here for a wee bit....
Avatar 12:51pm fred:

There's a vegetable based set in the Japanese New Music Festival shows. I don't remember the name though
  12:51pm rw:

Blixa's hair looks way too cool for the kitchen.
  12:52pm rbrt:

I'm going to put a black suit on to cook for now on
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm coelacanth∅:

there aren't very many (non-animal part) foods that i have never once enjoyed but risotto is one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm chresti:

haha rbrt and rw!

I love mushroom risotto-lot of cheese involved
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm chresti:

It's wise to wear black when cooking with squid ink
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Dropof Goldensun:

The rice flute is very difficult to make let alone play.
  12:58pm rw:

I'm guessing In V, as in vegetable and in T. Riley's In C
Avatar 12:58pm Sem:

Not to mention the multiple saliva samples in the Vegetable Orchestra soup...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm coelacanth∅:

Dropof haha!
Avatar 1:00pm fred:

Mayuko, that food festival would have to end with you doing an ice cream based set
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm coelacanth∅:

chresti, i don't know...cheesy mush. not for me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm chresti:

It's more creamy-rice texture, than mush
  1:07pm rbrt:

break free!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm chresti:

The type of rice used, (Arborio), doesn't get mushy
Avatar 1:08pm northguineahills:

As a kid in Japan, my mother taught English to daughters of Buddhist priest. He showed me his temple, and let me ride motorcycles, break scrap glass w/ slingshots w/ beans, and I'd play tag w/ him and my bros on their new three story house on the iron girders while it was under construction (never told my mother about the last one, she would have had a stroke). Unfortunately, I never learned what strain of Buddhism he practice, but he was the most awesome adult I knew as a kid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Dropof Goldensun:

I like cheese in my risotto. Also some wild mushrooms and black truffle oil.
  1:09pm Rickwaukee:

What remains of rural America give lip service to freedom - but it's not really practiced or appreciated - especially not in Others
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Mark Hurst:

Really appreciate your commentary, Mayuko, thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm chresti:

Dropof: YUM
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm chresti:

ngh: Wow
  1:11pm rw:

What Mark Hurst said! I got a little lost for a minute but I think I did get the general gist.
Avatar 1:11pm northguineahills:

(oh, and I got pulled over by the police on the motorcycle for driving on a major street, but just told me leave the motorcycle w/ the priest, as he was a respected member of the community).
  1:13pm rw:

This set is about rebellion!
  1:14pm Rickwaukee:

I say, this really ... ahem, rocks.
Avatar 1:15pm fred:

I wonder if this oppressive rule-based environment is related to how so many Japanese bands can revive stale genres, finding a way to make something new while staying within the established boundaries. Another side to the extreme noise coin maybe
Avatar 1:18pm fred:

That voice...
  1:19pm rw:

fred, to that idea, I'm reminded of the punk rock kids I see around town occasionally. Decked out to the nines in the iconography of rebellion in absolute conformity to the aesthetic.

And that voice too...
Avatar 1:19pm Mayuko:

@ngh buddhist monks in Japan are not necessarily known to be pious and square, so not surprising! haha.
  1:20pm rbrt:

haunted blues
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm chresti:

I like the Japanese band, Goat's song, "Solid Eye"
Avatar 1:22pm Mayuko:

@Rickwaukee It's kinda funny for me to actually come here and see what's behind of all that american fantasy my parents had dreamt of in the post-war era.
Avatar 1:22pm Mayuko:

Thank you for your kind words & listening, Mark!!!!!
Avatar 1:23pm Mayuko:

@rw That's ok, I lost myself for a minute too often while doing mic break.
  1:24pm Rickwaukee:

@Mayuko yeah, do as we say, not as we do, unfortunately
Avatar 1:26pm fred:

I think Keiji Haino is divisive in a good way: you quickly know whether you hate or love his music. I haven't seen him in a couple of years, that's wrong
  1:27pm rbrt:

well that was awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Uncle Michael:

Good afternoon.
Avatar 1:28pm Mayuko:

@chresti Koshiro Hino's Goat? I love them too!
Avatar 1:29pm Mayuko:

Good afternoon, Uncle Michael!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm coelacanth∅:

Dropof (@1.08) all that would be good in pasta, or on a potato!
but no thank you to the texture of risotto.
(not to go back in "time" but i was cooking. listening but not watching the computer)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Uncle Michael:

Bad risotto is bad. Good risotto is good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm coelacanth∅:

maybe i've never had "good risotto".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Uncle Michael:

it's possible...I've sure had bad risotto
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm coelacanth∅:

4 of the maybe 6 times i've tried it my sister's husband had made it. it's supposedly one of his specialties; but maybe he just thinks that.
  1:36pm mzz:

gotta go. later. i liked the banner painting.
Avatar 1:36pm david w:

In the middle of a food truck burrito, saying hello to all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm coelacanth∅:

david -is it hot?!
  1:39pm rw:

Avatar 1:39pm david w:

Avatar 1:40pm fred:

@David: I haven't listened to your show in a while, not a good thing but live shows come first
Avatar 1:41pm Mayuko:

fred @1:15 what you said reminded me of the time when I was in high school we all had to wear uniform. Kids would always come up with a new rebellious way to wear it - like wearing it with extremely, EXTREMELY long socks for example - so they were being very creative in a way.

But one thing they never would do is actually trying to change the rule/system to NOT to wear the uniform in the first place. The rebellion rarely gets to that level. I feel like that's how things go there most of the time, not only in music/art.
Avatar 1:42pm Mayuko:

Hey have a nice weekend, mzz!!
Avatar 1:43pm Mayuko:

Hi David w!! Thank you for tuning in!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm coelacanth∅:

(sounds painful but delicious!)

-yeah i feel like i haven't heard the ridgewood in a while myself.
i shouldn't have to work, damnit!
Avatar 1:43pm david w:

@Fred, I know where your heart is, and honor that.
Avatar 1:45pm Mayuko:

This comment board today is making me awfully hungry.
  1:47pm rw:

M, you started it with that Vegetable track.
Avatar 1:47pm david w:

Capsaicin! (special shout to coel).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm Uncle Michael:

Not inspired by the conversation, risotto was already on my Sunday menu...with oven roasted chicken thighs with lemons.
  1:48pm rw:

UM, you're insane. Is that how everyone in Topeka eats?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm coelacanth∅:

i'm chowing down now too. rice w/vegetables and tahini & cashews...soup. -so good!
and yes rw is correct!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Dave Sewelson:

I am very hungry but i have to do show after you Mayuko....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm coelacanth∅:

oh yes abundant cayenne! (more than i'd planned to put in)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm Uncle Michael:

Just those of us that notice how bad the restaurants here are...are have the skills to adapt.
  1:50pm rbrt:

I love how this song is just a slow strum repeated over and over
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm chresti:

I trust Uncle Michael's risotto
  1:51pm rw:

The restaurants in KC seem exceptional. Not so in Topeka?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm coelacanth∅:

chresti, i don't know why, but so do i!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Uncle Michael:

Careful, chresti...I'm trying a new recipe. Though, *I* trust Serious Eats.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm coelacanth∅:

Dave you better eat something!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Uncle Michael:

not so in Topeka.
Avatar 1:52pm Mayuko:

It's all V Orchestra's fault!!!

david i'm really digging this habanero (sp?) hot sauce from trader joes. not just hot but really nice flavor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Uncle Michael:

Good thing Dave S. doesn't play the licorice stick.
  1:54pm rbrt:

i'm sorry I kind of started it with my obsession with the veggie instruments
Avatar 1:56pm david w:

Thanks, coel. I'm forever on the hunt for authentic habanero flavor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm coelacanth∅:

yeah, Daniel Carter! i hope i don't miss too much of it. (i'm supposedly working after i finish eating)

On a whim, back on Saturday night I went looking for "Godspeed You! Black Emperor". The copy on YouTube had been taken down but I found a copy on the Internet Archive and watched it. It was really good. Stylistically like a Fredrick Weisman documentary. I did note that the only woman to speak in that film was the mother of the boy the film followed through the first half hour or so. I've been musing on feelings of autonomy & freedom since.
