This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hello Flash and co-explorers
Avatar 6:56pm Flash Strap:

Hi Chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm listener james from westwood:

Evening, all!!
Avatar 7:02pm Flash Strap:

Lancelot Layne is so crucial
Avatar 7:02pm Flash Strap:

Hi Listener James!
Avatar 7:04pm Flash Strap:

Kamboulay is just barely getting started: this is one of the ultimate history lessons in song, this is what Calypso was made to do, but rarely does on such a grand scale
Avatar 7:07pm hyde:

hi! gonna be low profile tonight, but i'm here ;)
Avatar 7:07pm Flash Strap:

Hi Hyde! keep it cool, low key, very wise
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...needs a SchoolhouseRock cartoon...
Avatar 7:09pm Flash Strap:

hi RevRab!
Avatar 7:13pm Flash Strap:

Lancelot kills me everytime, one of the greatest and most unfairly overlooked/underrecorded of the later Calypsonians. very reminsicent of Chalkdust's style as the "Calypso Professor", but stylistically much more radical. Unusually good among his peers at synthesizing soca, disco, etc., and Rapso (which he "invented" more or less) as well
Avatar 7:14pm Flash Strap:

Damn even Crispus Attucks gets a shoutout
Avatar 7:14pm Little Danny:

Hey Flash, hey all
Avatar 7:15pm Flash Strap:

Hey LD!

Hi Evan and all you Explorers out there!
Avatar 7:23pm Flash Strap:

Hi Doc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm doctorjazz:

This is great!
Avatar 7:25pm Flash Strap:

really cool production on this Nat King Cole, virtually all his Capitol recordings are just so perfect in that regard
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm doctorjazz:

A bit of Passover Spirit (sing this at the Seder... Can't compete with Nat Cole, though)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm doctorjazz:

Love Cole with the trio...
Avatar 7:27pm Flash Strap:

me either Doc
Avatar 7:29pm Flash Strap:

is this the best Trinity track? sometimes I think this is untoppable
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm chresti:

Jolly good time!
Avatar 7:32pm Flash Strap:

This track can be found on the King Tubby comp, Freedom Sounds in Dub, highly recommended, some of his coolest, most unique stuff is there (and virtually nowhere else). just now getting into it of late
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm doctorjazz:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm chresti:

Lee Perry production?
Avatar 7:35pm Flash Strap:

definitely Lee Perry
Avatar 7:35pm Flash Strap:

there;s a few version of this Congos track, this one is from the lee Perry Arkology box set
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm chresti:

Those voices knock me sideways @Congos
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

very sprightly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm doctorjazz:

It's in the cart (the King Tubby).
Love this bed music...have this Paul Shapiro CD, saw him this past New Year Day at The City Winery, NYC, great show! (Part of my Microscopic Septet gruopiedom)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm chresti:

Enjoying the bed music, also!
Avatar 7:48pm Flash Strap:

@chresti: That Paul Shapiro is oddly enough my favorite Tzadik release, truly wonderful music
Avatar 7:49pm Flash Strap:

Hi there Granny!
Avatar 7:51pm Flash Strap:

This La Mont Zeno Theatre LP is so intense
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

What was I watching - made the comparison of how Germany handles its' Nazi history compared to what the U.S. does w/ Slavery...It's nowhere to be seen...
Avatar 7:55pm northguineahills:

You went full Assyrian, Flash! even 2 millennia before Hassan-I Sabbah, where Hashashins (assassins) got their name from, and where the Muslims showed the Crusaders of the herb until it became noticed in Europe.
Avatar 7:55pm northguineahills:

Damn, missed Trinity and the Congos!
Avatar 7:56pm Flash Strap:

Hi NGH - no fear, lots of dub & toasting to come
Avatar 7:57pm northguineahills:

(full Assyrian, references the image).
Avatar 7:58pm Flash Strap:

according to some, that's supposed to be an early representation of cannabis, but in truth I think it's just cedar
Avatar 7:59pm Flash Strap:

still, yeah, I can't resist the Assyrians
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

not the best recording quality but I've always loved this Sun Ra live album, incredibly mystic shit going on here
Avatar 8:04pm Flash Strap:

great little solo coming up too
Avatar 8:06pm coelacanth∅:

hey Flash & Explorers
Avatar 8:08pm Flash Strap:

hey coelacanth!
  8:10pm melinda:

Hi chums
Avatar 8:10pm Flash Strap:

ah hello, Melinda!
Avatar 8:14pm Flash Strap:

Mingus, my god, the guy's pretty good
Avatar 8:17pm northguineahills:

If Doug was here, I'd intend a pun, "are you Assyrias?"
Avatar 8:17pm Flash Strap:

hey that's a Doug-worthy pun
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm doctorjazz:

This Shepp Horace Parlan duet is great (they did another great album, Trouble In Mind)
Avatar 8:20pm Flash Strap:

Shepp has such a voice, I love him so much
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm doctorjazz:

Ok,time too take the show to the car (as usual), night all, happy holidays.
Avatar 8:21pm Flash Strap:

Oh, I don't think I've heard that, Doc!
Avatar 8:22pm Flash Strap:

safe travels Doc, thanks for hangin out
Avatar 8:23pm Flash Strap:

when I heard about this new Idris Ackamoor coming out I was just automatically skeptical, but wow, it's great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm doctorjazz:

The duo's take on the blues. As this is a gospel tribute.
Avatar 8:25pm Flash Strap:

gotta check it out ASAP
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm doctorjazz:

The album on Discogs
Avatar 8:27pm Flash Strap:

that's Goin' Home - looking at Trouble now: www.discogs.com...
  8:30pm Dean:

Shoot, I passed up a used copy of that Shepp/Parlan, because I have Trouble in Mind and I confused it with Goin' Home. Will return to store in hopes it's still available...
Avatar 8:30pm northguineahills:

Nice Gary Lucas!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm doctorjazz:

  8:33pm Dean:

Not the first oops, won't be the last.
Avatar 8:33pm Flash Strap:

Hi Dean!
Avatar 8:34pm Flash Strap:

yeah there's some great stuff on Gary Lucas' tzadik records, Busy Being Born is really good too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm doctorjazz:

I meant my post, Dean. Gotta drive now...
  8:36pm Dean:

See?! What'd I tell ya?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm doctorjazz:

The correct link.

Avatar 8:42pm northguineahills:

(freedom sounds in Dub is the release I have).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm nostrangerer:

Heavy heavy and only halfway there. Lead on.
Avatar 8:45pm northguineahills:

You can tell the Black Ark when you hear it, this sounds rather cleaned up if it is....
Avatar 8:46pm Flash Strap:

Hey Nostrangerer! Glad to have you on board
Avatar 8:46pm Flash Strap:

totally agree, NGH, I don't know the story on this but I doubt Lee Perry has anything to do with it
Avatar 8:47pm Flash Strap:

but I like the difference in the vocal arrangement from the better known Perry production, and some of the instrumentation is cool too
Avatar 8:48pm Flash Strap:

now THIS is the Perry sound!
Avatar 8:48pm northguineahills:

The Congos after Congo Ashanti go from mediocre to crap (I learned the hard way, buying everything I could find from them). But Congo Ashanti is a masterpiece, one of the most brilliant pieces of music.
Avatar 8:48pm Flash Strap:

Tip Top Romeo track, this
Avatar 8:50pm Flash Strap:

often when I try to really spend time with Ashanti, I get restless and go back to Heart of the Congos, I need to get real with it and give it a true listen
Avatar 8:52pm Flash Strap:

i haven't heard anything of theirs really, between that and the Sun Araw thing. which was good i thought
Avatar 8:54pm Flash Strap:

great jah woosh cover: img.discogs.com...
Avatar 8:56pm northguineahills:

I had a certain friend who did her PhD doctorate w/ the Congos and other roots/dub acolytes about a decade ago. She still gives lectures on it (and she's an amazing dj).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm chresti:

Avatar 8:56pm Flash Strap:

one of the best toast LPs, this
Avatar 8:57pm Flash Strap:

@NGH: that's really cool, I wonder what she thought of that FRKWYS collab
Avatar 8:57pm Flash Strap:

i'd love to hear that lecture
Avatar 8:58pm Franco Twinkie:

Flash, You are conjuring a happy, happy spring day vibe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm chresti:

Agree @Flash, good toasting
Avatar 8:59pm Flash Strap:

Hey Franco! very happy to hear it
Avatar 8:59pm Flash Strap:

obsessed for life with this Tapper album and this song on it
Avatar 8:59pm Franco Twinkie:

Man Ah Warrior. Top shelve comical nightmare!
Avatar 9:00pm Flash Strap:

"said education is what we need ... education is the topic of the day!" something i love about that
Avatar 9:01pm Franco Twinkie:

My copy is on Mer,The Music Of The Most High.
Avatar 9:02pm northguineahills:

@Evan: I know I love the FRKWYS collab!
Avatar 9:03pm Flash Strap:

@Franco: ah yes the one with the bald head cover!
Avatar 9:03pm Flash Strap:

@NGH: the live record they did was cool too
Avatar 9:03pm Flash Strap:

VERY laid back dub from the Lone Ranger
Avatar 9:04pm northguineahills:

(I'm a baldy)(never had dreads, thank Jah)
Avatar 9:04pm northguineahills:

(baldy in the rasta parlance)
Avatar 9:06pm Franco Twinkie:

I could do a swinging bag of locks, but I like to wash my hair every other day.
Avatar 9:11pm Flash Strap:

god damn this one's a classic for a reason
Avatar 9:15pm Flash Strap:

I don't think Keith is actually involved in this track. weird record, wish i knew the source recording here, sounds like Sons of Negus
Avatar 9:22pm Flash Strap:

great squiggles from Mikey Dread all over this LP
Avatar 9:27pm northguineahills:

Back when I was 22, a friend of mine djed one of the largest modern art galleries in Jacksonville. A lot of blue hairs were there. My friend played Dillenger's "Cocaine in My Brain". We should have brought some fainting couches.
Avatar 9:30pm coelacanth∅:

i used to live with a guy who had long, beautiful dreads. i'd bet many women were jealous, as it seems most "black" women with long beautiful hair bought it, and have scant hair growing from their scalp.
anyway i don't know how often he washed his hair. he was extraordinarily clean and tidy in general; but he put all kinds of stuff into his hair! eggs, yoghurt, mayonaise...basically, if something was rotting or a dairy product going sour or moldy in the refrigerator, he'd transfer it to the bathtub for later use!
Avatar 9:31pm Flash Strap:

@NGH: hilarious
Avatar 9:32pm Flash Strap:

had a whole family of Carolina wrens nesting on my porch; chicks hatched a few days ago. just looked out in time to see a snake eat the last of them, and choke down the mother. damn, nature, damn
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm passiflora:

got lost in my work. distressing to miss this!
Avatar 9:33pm Flash Strap:

@C: gross
  9:34pm Dean:

Yep, nature's overrated. I'll never understand why anybody would want to "commune" with it.
Avatar 9:34pm Flash Strap:

hi passiflora! the archive will always be there for you waiting with open arms
Avatar 9:35pm Flash Strap:

@dean: hey, i didn't go that far. embrace the vortex of savagery and chaos or you miss the sublime on offer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm chresti:

Prince Jazzbo's Jamaican Collie, is a favorite
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Uncle Michael:

I trick nature into thinking I'm an ally for the tomatoes.
  9:37pm Dean:

Yes, but "the vortex of savagery and chaos" is 1) a human (i.e., your) construct), and 2) you are necessarily of nature, as are we all. I admire the sublime in human interventions as much as in so-called "Grand" canyons.
Avatar 9:38pm coelacanth∅:

sometimes i step in. if the snake's not in danger of starvation i might try to create some sort of barrier. i know it probably wouldn't work; and i know i'd be interfering with ...something. but enough wrens must get taken and enough snakes survive -and it's possible that the wrens were more vulnerable than they'd be if a house and porch wasn't there to nest upon.
  9:40pm Dean:

Put another way, suburbs are kinda cool, too.
Avatar 9:41pm Flash Strap:

hehe Dean I think you know there's a difference between a tree and a coal plant when it comes to which is more "of nature" but you can dig the burbs if you dig em
Avatar 9:42pm Flash Strap:

@C: I usually don;t but I might have in this case, after watching them build their nest all season... but I came too late this time
Avatar 9:43pm Franco Twinkie:

The first time I saw the Grand Canyon I stood on the edge and thought to myself this is nice. Then I saw an airplane flying thru it and I quickly made a spacial calculation, then I got dizzy and fell down.
Avatar 9:43pm coelacanth∅:

Evan, regarding the dreadlocks it seemed pretty gross to me too, but he never smelled, as far as i knew (except faintly of patchouli or another earthy essential oil)
Avatar 9:44pm Flash Strap:

impressive, you gotta hand it to him then
Avatar 9:47pm coelacanth∅:

right,Flash. i've never witnessed a snake in nature take it's meal. that might've caught me off guard.
...i've successfully protected birds' nests from various mammals only to come out one day to an empty nest. -too sudden for them to've learned to fly.
they were probably taken by a hawk.
Avatar 9:48pm coelacanth∅:

...and i'm kind of okay with that, as the hawks are diminishing.
Avatar 9:50pm TDK60:

Darn, just gettin' here at the end of a smokin' show; will hafta check the archive later...
Avatar 9:51pm northguineahills:

Clicky-starred the episode!
