Hey Kris. Here early. Just finishing up Kev Beadle’s show from last night. I had missed his career before totally wired radio launched but am glad he came out of retirement. His three shows so far have been outstanding.

Matt from New Orleans:

WWOZ is playing highlights from a multitrack recording of a benefit for Professor Longhair in 1974 after his house had a fire tomorrow at 1 PM central. A who’s who of New Orleans musicians played the benefit. The tapes have been sitting in the vault since 1974 and haven’t been played in years until the station started going through the archives for jazz fest’s 50th anniversary

Do you have any gospel songbirds on excello with iris chat as well?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Otis clay wasn’t paying attention before I posted
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I have an ace compilation cd of excello gospel
Avatar 10:21pm
Kris Holmes:

i have zero by Gospel Songbirds
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Matt from New Orleans:

They are not on that cd btw but it’s a solid compilation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Little Danny:

Thanks for the heads-up on that Ace comp, Matt. I woulda figured most of that music would have released on Nashboro, cool that some exists on Excello
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I took it out of the library near my childhood home in high school. I put in on a cassette and listened to it a lot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I had no clue about all of the other great music on excello till quite some time later
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Little Danny:

Muddy had been listening to "Tramp." At least to my ears. Great one, new to me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Danny do you have the four cd comp of nashboro gospel on Tompkins square? I got to know Josh who owns the label when he worked at Sony with my friend Adam.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
Matt from New Orleans:

He’s put out a few good gospel comps
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Little Danny:

Yep! I do know that comp. Good stuff. I actually thought they missed many great titles, but 4 CDs doesn't give you much time to cover such a consistent and terrific catalog. It's all personal tastes, anyway
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Fair enough. Well not many want to collect 78 gospel records(myself included) and universal records seems uninterested in reissuing any excello/nashboro material

Heya Kris.

Jimmy Smith lived right down the long country road from me. I literally walked to his barn several times and talked instruments with him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm

Not back at the chicken shack?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm

Hi Franco. Goodnight Michael.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
Franco Twinkie:

Carmichael, When/where was that?
  11:27pm
Carmichael:

Late 80s, in Davis, CA.
  11:28pm
Carmichael:

I’m not shitting anyone. This was a real experience.
  11:28pm
Carmichael:

It could have been Dixon, technically.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
Franco Twinkie:

Great! So I imagine he had his Hammond/Leslie set up in the barn? My favorite record of his is The Sound of Jimmy Smith with the picture of the Cyclotron/lawn sprinkler on the cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I know the candoli bros from the tonight show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm
Franco Twinkie:

Did you live there when Robert Crumb lived there?
Avatar 11:32pm
Kris Holmes:

i only know them from their above average Jazz recordings from the 50s, because there was no Tonight Show in New Zealand lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I figured you’d missed out on Johnny Carson fairly completely
  11:33pm
Carmichael:

He had at least a dozen organs in a warehouse space. He played When Johnny Came Marching Home Again many times.
Avatar 11:35pm
Kris Holmes:

lol at When Johnny Comes Marching Home
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Did he vocalize emphatic “hurrahs”?
  11:36pm
Carmichael:

Yes! R Crumb lived in Woodland, very close by. He and his wife were eco activists, and would purposefully change the construction markers where they were building. He had an astonishing collection of original 78s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
Little Danny:

Conte Candoli in particular cut some terrific West Coast bop early on
  11:37pm
Carmichael:

Sorry, that seemed to be his favorite organ tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm
Franco Twinkie:

I know! His collection is legendary.
Avatar 11:38pm
Kris Holmes:

Dan, indeed
  11:39pm
Carmichael:

Sorry all, back to the playlist discussion.
Avatar 11:41pm
Kris Holmes:

R Crumb was definitely a legendary 78 collectro
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm
Franco Twinkie:

The 'Banned' version! There was this huge kurfuffle on L.A. radio when this came out because of the provocative lyrics. I missed my chance to discuss this with John Fleckenstien, the bass player, when we worked together. When I found out he was a Standell, that was our last job together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm
chresti:

Thanks Kris! Good night!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Thanks Kris. See you next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm
