I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

When we were kids, Mom sent in a bunch of labels for a Green Giant kite. That thing sailed high into the air. Like a dummy, I tied it to the fence at dusk and we had a broken kite the next morning.

Mayuko:

@Joe B Haha, that should be the listener meetup thing for this show! We all meet in a desert or something.
  1:25pm
rw:

Joe, I was thinking the same thing. And speaking of kite flying, my friend Noel had a german made contraption with wings and maybe a spinner that would travel up the kite string. When it got to the top it would hit a clip attached to the string that would make the wings fold down and it would travel back to you. It had a really cool german name that I can't remember.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm
melinda:

love the Caretaker. Great moody set.
  1:26pm
rbrt:

that is one fancy kite, mine were literally 2 sticks and a light tissue paper
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm
Michael 98145:

@rbt, i never flew a fancy kite, either ..
  1:28pm
rw:

rbrt, the german thing wasn't a kite it was more like a kite accessory.
  1:29pm
rw:

I always liked the box kites. Never flew one though.
Avatar 1:29pm
JosephB:

@rw so this device actually zipped up the kite string and came back down? Incredible!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

It was pentagon shaped. I don't remember if we were able to fix it after the crash.
  1:31pm
rbrt:

I always wanted a box kite too! prob very hard to get going!
  1:33pm
rw:

Joe, yes! Man, I wish I could remember the name of it. We flew it at the beach and put bits of trash in the clip so when it got to the top and the wings folded the clip would release the trash over PCH.
Avatar 1:34pm
Mayuko:

Ha, so pentagon shape one flies really well? I've had the best experience with a diamond kite. I love it's classic look, too. Some shapes must require some real skills, I suppose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Note for later: design a kite-flying app.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm
fred:

I never flew a kite. And I have now idea why it's called "cerf-volant" in French (which would translate to "flying deer")
Avatar 1:37pm

@rw the whole thing sounds very german! Think the simplicity of dental floss is all I can handle.

Hey Guys. Did any of you make hot air balloons with cleaner bags?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm

According to Wikipedia, the French name came from a mistranscription of "serp volante", which meant "flying snake", and makes a little more sense
Avatar 1:46pm

@Ken That's a nice memory. I guess flying kite is a good way of celebrating the arrival of spring, going outside to enjoy the weather.

No, It wasn't safe at all. You make a hoop with plastic drinking straws, with an additional X that you set with straight pins to impale birthday candles. You then tape this wheel to the edges of the bag. One person holds up the bag while the other person lights the candles, and wooosh! it takes off. Can you tart trees on fire? Most certainly!
