Hey prudy, I saw on the comments board yesterday that you lost hearing in one ear (at least I think it was you; if not, please ignore this). Sorry to read that. I hope the implant works for you. Few things worse than a music lover losing their hearing.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am

@prudy I have that tinnitus too. I never connected that with why I always have noise around (I even sleep with earbuds in lol) until I saw that movie Baby Driver. The lead character always has music playing to drown out the the ringing. I do know several folks with the implants (I'm that age...) and they have no complaints whatsoever. Wishing you the best.

Hate to mention it but have y'all seen The Bleeding Edge? It's a doc on how barely-researched/proven medical devices really are. There are many that cause serious problems but are misdiagnosed cos no one thinks that the devices are causing it - like autoimmune reactions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am

Being half deaf means I get double the mileagle on earplugs, kind of a sweet deal

one final thing re hearing loss. There are studies that correlate/w(don't know correct term) hearing loss with dementia onset. I am not using correct scientific term, but i've watched myself (and others)tune out of conversations because I can't follow them and then get lost in my own thoughts/world.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am
melinda:

@prudy I've heard about the hearing loss-dementia connection too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am
Phillippe Bastille:

@prudy I hope that's a tenuous connection. I have some anecdotal evidence to the contrary -- father and mother-in-law lived into their mid-80s with hearing loss. No dementia for my mother-in-law, my dad only a week or two at the end when his Parkinsons took him and everything was failing. I could also include hearing loss in my kids when they were younger and I asked them to do something, but it seemed to be temporary ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am
fred:

@prudy: WFMU should be a bulwark against any cognitive loss, it should more than offset other factors
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am
Krys O.:

Recent studies showed a connection between either herpes and/or gingivitis with dementia. My dad was mostly deaf, but he did not have dementia. Dementia is not withdrawal from society.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am
Phillippe Bastille:

@Krys I saw that gingivitis study. My bride waved it in my face since I am more than a little behind on dentist visits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am
melinda:

@fred FMU is part of my health program, for sure. I think hearing loss is one of many things they've linked to dementia but isn't predictive of whether or not you'll have it. I think stimulating your brain in other ways to compensate for the lessened auditory pathway stimulation probably does help.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am
