Hi all, thanks for tuning in. RIP to the great John Gary Williams, last of the Mad Lads.

Matt from New Orleans:

Did the Mad Lads actually record an album or were they just packages of singles?

Hey Kris! That .Mad Lads was cool. New to me.
Avatar 10:05pm
Kris Holmes:

They had three albums in their prime, each increasingly less a collection of singles, there is also a John Gary Williams solo LP

Good to get that good-for-you sugar from the Lads. When I was having a few tacos at lunch, I was tempted by lime soda and some locally made mandarin orange soda, but, DAMN, MAN, the sugar doses in 'em persuaded me to forgo either.

Matt from New Orleans:

The only mad lads I own is in that huge complete stax volt singles box set
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Maybe 9 cds is large not huge compared to the Grateful Dead box I bought that has 80 cds
Avatar 10:12pm
Kris Holmes:

80 CDs? JFC!!!!
  10:12pm
Dean:

9 Mad Lads CDs probably contains the equivalent number of songs as on an 80 CD Dead set.

It was limited to 6500 and it was 30 complete previously unreleased live shows in honor of fare thee well. It was a waste of money actually but I’ve enjoyed delving into it. I had heard every show already but still was nice to revisit in soundboard vs god knows how many generation cassette tapes

It’s good WFMU archives the shows on their own website. Had this been uploaded to mixcloud, no one in the US would be able to listen.

(Was tempted by that 80 CD Dead set...I'm more likely to pass on it, then spend twice as much getting the discs one by one]

The Leonard Bernstein box issued by DG for last year's centennial consists of 121 CDs + 36 DVDs.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
chresti:

This 1000 dances is sensational!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Matt from New Orleans:

The Leonard Bernstein set is several hundred dollars cheaper for more material. Probably because a great deal of the music is public domain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Little Danny:

@Dean. Good lord. I mean, I understand the completist urge, but that's too much/many. Quality control, c'mon. Or is DG's understanding that no one is actually listening to entire discs start to finish?
  10:59pm
Carmichael:

I have the completionist urge for a few artists, but I don’t want everything they’ve muttered into an open mic.
  11:05pm
Dean:

I suspect some of the consumers of the CDs+DVDs already owned all or most of the LPs reissued as CDs. There are other issues out there of the same order of magnitude -- the Charles Munch 86 CD box, e.g. -- but Lenny, like the Dead, is something of a national treasure. That box, by the way, was only the complete DG label releases. Bernstein's discography includes as well recordings on Columbia, Angel, etc. The CBS box set from late 2017 (another centenary tribute) is 100 CDs. But Sony had already issued a Bernstein Edition during the '80s and '90s!

Anyway, these discs are not designed to be heard as "albums" per se, nor were the original LPs, necessarily. When they're programmed well, indeed, one wants to hear everything, but I suspect classical fans are generally more picky about what to play, in what order, etc. That is, until the present century, when the whole concept of "album" has been challenged.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
Little Danny:

Much the same, Carmichael. Not to mention the artists that I am obsessed with (in a completist sort of way) have relatively small catalogs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
Matt from New Orleans:

How many 45s are you bringing with you to your gig on Sunday? It would seem like you’d need close to a thousand without repeats.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Tired math. Added an extra zero.
Avatar 11:11pm
Kris Holmes:

125 would do it, the rule of thumb is 25 songs per hour, i'll probably pack 150ish
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
Matt from New Orleans:

That’s still a lot of records to think about if trying to create a flow over 5 hours.
  11:14pm
Dean:

Well, see! Just play the DG Bernstein box set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
Little Danny:

Thanks Dean! I knew that'd elicit an interesting response from you. And I think you confirmed my suspicions about the expected listening experience.

I guess I'm skeptical of these lavish sets that aim for comprehensiveness over "listenability." Again, though, I get the impulse.
  11:19pm
Dean:

Right. Some Bernstein [or fill-in-the-blank-with-artist's-name] fans are also interested in when the records are *not* listenable. And on occasion that interest exhibits a healthy concern for the evolution of the artistic life of the subject.
  11:19pm
Carmichael:

Going through my 45s, I just found an original Excello release of Slim Harpo’s Don’t Start Crying Now. Where did I find/steal that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
Matt from New Orleans:

The Dead box set for instance according to David Lemieux their archivist is supposed to tell the story of the dead through their evolution as a band. Clearly as the years progressed, there were far less successful shows that were worth including. The 80s/90s still had some great shows but the consistency was gone. Kids don’t do heroin.
  11:35pm
Dean:

Come to think of it, the Dead make for a nice comparison with Bernstein. Both released a ton of recorded music, and both had careers as live artists that were arguably more important than their studio careers.
  11:36pm
Dean:

I suppose the same might be said for "Weird Al" Yankovic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Kris I’m laying down. I’ll listen to the end. Thanks for an enlightening show.
Avatar 11:41pm

Thank you Matt

I grew up in a city, Whittier, CA, one of whose patriarchs was a fellow named Gene Chandler. His obituaries make no mention of his recording career.
