Hey Kris. i hope you and Larry attack the tributes from different angles but I’m sure I’ll be hearing duplicates tomorrow.

Hey long home and Kris! Matt!

Hey chresti
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Kris had you gone to see Roky live since the Stomp
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm
Franco Twinkie:

Hail Roky!
Avatar 10:04pm
Kris Holmes:

yes, i saw him in 2011, wait, what year was the Stomp?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm
Little Danny:

Hey Kris, hey all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Hey Franco
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm
Franco Twinkie:

Matt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm
Little Danny:

For some reason I thought you were on the West Coast this week, Kris
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm
Matt from New Orleans:

He played at the “hurricane” stomp in 2017
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm
Matt from New Orleans:

And in 2008 as well
Avatar 10:06pm
Kris Holmes:

in a couple weeks time Dan
Avatar 10:06pm
Kris Holmes:

Dang, I forgot all about seeing him that first night in 2017!!
Avatar 10:07pm
Kris Holmes:

possibly better than 2011 because of the backing band
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm
Little Danny:

Well I'm delighted to find you here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm
Little Danny:

Roky played Marfa a coupla years ago
Avatar 10:08pm
Kris Holmes:

I passed on seeing him in Marfa in 2016, Dan you passed on that also iirc?
Avatar 10:09pm
Kris Holmes:

I won't even miss a show while we're in LA, fly out Wed come back Sun
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm
Little Danny:

Yeah, I can't deal with reunions or late-career resurgences in the flesh. Too much potential for painfulness
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm
Little Danny:

Man I'm an asshole
Avatar 10:10pm
Kris Holmes:

I was glad to see him in 2011 but it wasn't actually all that musically
Avatar 10:10pm
still b/p:

Is there a genuine concert venue in Marfa? Or just a nightspot where a name might perform?
Avatar 10:10pm
Kris Holmes:

Ballroom Marfa
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm
Matt from New Orleans:

true enough danny. I always hope for the best when I attend the stomp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
Franco Twinkie:

The first time I went to San Francisco in 1966 on a family vacation You're Gonna Miss Me was very big on both KFRC and KYA. It made me jump up and down in the back seat of our Oldsmobile.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
Little Danny:

Surprisingly there are concert-sized venues, still b/p. I mean a coupla places that can hold several hundred people. But none of them are ideal
Avatar 10:12pm
still b/p:

And it WAS your father's Oldsmobile.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm
Little Danny:

That's so great, Franco. The Elevators were huge in Texas, and they were huge in San Francisco. But almost nowhere else in their day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
Franco Twinkie:

Yup. Mom and dads car. After all, I was only 11 years old.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
Little Danny:

"huge" being relative, of course
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I think the 2017 set was better than the 2008 set I saw as Roky was more comfortable on stage and the band was better. I can’t actually remember who backed him at both shows and whether it was the same musicians but it sounded better the second time.
Avatar 10:15pm
Kris Holmes:

I think it was essentially Eve & The Exiles in 2017
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
Franco Twinkie:

What year was he backed by Okerville River? That's when I saw him in L.A.
Avatar 10:17pm
still b/p:

Just looked at Marfa population, curious about the attention-buzz effect. Steadily dropping, though, and a significant drop back in 1999 to 2000. Wha' happened then? Or maybe just a counting procedure difference?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
Little Danny:

@still b/p: For all the attention it gets, few people actually move to Marfa. But I don't know what happened in 1999-2000. That was just before the international buzz machine got going
Avatar 10:24pm
Kris Holmes:

Okkervill River was earlier in the 2000s, that was apparently the best time to catch his comeback. I saw Okkervill River sometime in the late 2000s & they were fantastic sans Roky.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Little Danny:

Had no idea "Baby Blue" was released as a 7"
Avatar 10:30pm
Kris Holmes:

flip of She Lives In A Time Of Her Own, beautifully fragile version
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
chresti:

Isn't Marfa where there are Donald Judd works?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Little Danny:

@chresti: yes indeed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Franco Twinkie:

The one that still makes me wonder if I made the right decision was i think 1981. I had to make a choice: Muddy Waters AND Willy Dixon at The Roxy, or Roky down the block at The Whisky. Muddy was sad, Willy was great, but Roky burned The Whisky to the ground. That's the show he did a shrieking, blood curdling cover of Heroin. Regrets. oh well.
Avatar 10:36pm
Kris Holmes:

oh man, what a choice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Franco Twinkie:

Go for broke, Kris!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I’m laying down Kris. I’ll still be listening but not chatting. 10 CDs. I have it as well.
Avatar 10:43pm
Kris Holmes:

Right on Matt!
Avatar 10:45pm
Kris Holmes:

Also, the old conundrum Franco of the Whisky or the Roxy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
chresti:

Is there a recording of that performance, Franco?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Franco Twinkie:

When The Elevators hit the ground in '66 I was laying on the floor watching TV while my mom was ironing. They came on and did of course You're Gonna Miss Me. I thought they were beatniks 'cause a couple of them were wearing dark shades.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Franco Twinkie:

Yes Dear, I's in that towering pile in the living room.
  11:11pm
Carmichael:

Heya Kris. Thanks for the Roy Head. Gotta do it right!
Avatar 11:16pm

I love Roy Head! Well until he went country.

Go to the store. Rake the leaves. Fix this, fix that. Makes me want to scream!
  11:24pm

Happy wife, happy life.
  11:25pm
Carmichael:

Like the Irish song goes, “we’ll give ‘em the slip, and we’ll take a sip of the rare ol’ mountain dew.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
chresti:

Listen to Carmichael carefully, Franco. In reality, I'm not included in the who Franco's referring to
Avatar 11:30pm

There are SO MANY of these kickass soul singers I've never heard of. Collier's great!

Love this song. Lyrics are wonderful.

For me, that jug sound and the background singing, does it every time
Avatar 11:35pm

Franco! Chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
chresti:

I never heard of Gino Scorza, either.
Hi again geez!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm
Franco Twinkie:

That Gino Scorza was the anti-elevator sound of Texas. Jaunty horns and a whirring organ.
Avatar 11:42pm
Kris Holmes:

Gino Scorza extremely obscure San Antonio artist
  11:42pm
Carmichael:

Ha ha, chresti. That’s why I like you!
  11:43pm
Carmichael:

Watch the opening to The Commitments. Roy Head sets the mood.
Avatar 11:44pm

Sounds like summer.

Tell It Like It Is is one of those perfect pop songs.
