Hola Kris and home folks

Matt from New Orleans:

Hey Kris and Chresti. I went to the Dr John second line on Friday. What a joyful celebration. I live close to this mural of Dr John that takes up the side of a two story house and there’s been a party there every night since Thursday. I’m sure the neighbors are starting to get fed up.

Hi guys!

Kris Holmes:

Matt that sounds like a great party
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm
Franco Twinkie:

Righty-O, Daddy-O! Let us raise our....whatever you drink from...sippy cup, old shoe, silver chalice. ect, ect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I stopped by like an hour ago to see if it was still happening and there were like 30-40 people out there listening to Dr John from someone’s car.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
Franco Twinkie:

La Louisianne, that's a brand of coffee, right? With chicory, which is a ditch weed, correct?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I’m just glad that I got to see Buck so many times at the Stomp and other gigs around New Orleans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Chicory is the root of endive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
Franco Twinkie:

Oh, okay. I had it pointed out to me while camping in Arkansas.
Avatar 10:20pm
Kris Holmes:

i love coffee with chicory but Misa can't stand it so alas it is now banned in the Holmes household :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I’m with Misa. It served a purpose during coffee shortages in WWII on the home front but why ruin good coffee with a bitter root
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I’ll drink it as Vietnamese coffee because the condensed milk smoothes the flavors
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
chresti:

roasted chicory
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I saw Buck back up lil bob at the stomp
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
chresti:

I've only had Louisianne back when I drank coffee that came in a can
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I think I was still living in NY the first time I saw Buck and bob and just cane down for two weeks for jazz fest
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
Little Danny:

Hey all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Little Danny:

As someone who's never tried coffee with chicory, can someone describe its flavor?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
Little Danny:

Byrne's "Lights Out" is a stormer, too
Avatar 10:37pm
Kris Holmes:

It's like a real dark earthy flavor
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Usually it’s roasted in the darker end of the spectrum so it just sort of tastes like slightly bitterer earthier dark roast coffee. The flavor is noticeable but not overwhelming.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
Franco Twinkie:

When he was busy dancing and throwing glitter, James Booker would bang the keys. Mr. Booker was a very unique fella.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
Franco Twinkie:

Danny, it's like drinking boiled dirt.
Avatar 10:39pm
Kris Holmes:

Matt nailed it, an earthy, dark roast.
Avatar 10:42pm
Kris Holmes:

I don't own Jerry Byrne "Lights Out" :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Matt from New Orleans:

There was a huge fight in my former office because they had been buying coffee with chicory for years but eventually most of the employees were from out of town originally and someone finally said something at a staff meeting and most everyone chimed in in agreement and the chicory was banished.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Little Danny:

Hmm. I am definitely curious now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
Matt from New Orleans:

The older employees wanted it to stay but were significantly outnumbered but complained bitterly for almost a year after
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
Little Danny:

Dude, it's a cheap 45 and you should buy it posthaste
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
Little Danny:

Durned outside agitators
Avatar 10:44pm
Kris Holmes:

i know
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I used to sit near the kitchen where the coffee machines are and was subjected to noise about the coffee daily for the way too long. It got so I would put on headphones as soon I sat down at my desk
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
Little Danny:

Is there quality chicory coffee that could be purchased say from an online source? I really want to try it now
Avatar 10:46pm
Kris Holmes:

Dude, just go to Porters & buy a yellow tin of Cafe Du Monde in the coffee section, that's what I used to do :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Little Danny:

Oh awesome, I will - figured it was more of a specialty-only type thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
Matt from New Orleans:

As I said to Danny last week, I got to see Mac play guitar at the Stomp in 2008.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Franco Twinkie:

Matt, the oldsters sometimes have funny ways. I have a friend who's dad was on a chain gang in the south for been a vagrant. When my friend would scratch himself up as a kid, his dad would scrub his woulds with an onion soaked in turpentine. No Bactine for this guy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Little Danny:

Rebenack played on the mid-'60s L.A. sessions that culminated in perhaps the greatest Spector-ian girl-group production of them all, the Cake's "Baby That's Me."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Franco Twinkie:

For about five minutes Dr. John was in The Mothers Of Invention.
Avatar 10:52pm
Kris Holmes:

I was going to include the Cake track but I wasn't sure if he played on that track or just the one he wrote on the album (which i don't have)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
chresti:

It has a slightly smoky flavor to it, @Danny
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Little Danny:

It's funny, I pulled the LP out myself last night to see if I could nail down that track's personnel. Session musicians are listed on the album but not track-by-track alas. Pianists for the album sessions included Rebennack, Harold Battiste(!), and Mike Melvoin. Rebennack also listed as the sole organist
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
Little Danny:

And do you like its flavor, Chresti?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Seeing Mac play this with lil Buck was great
Avatar 10:59pm
Kris Holmes:

so if that track has organ.....it's definitely him, if piano only, your odds are less so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
chresti:

No. I don't like smoky flavors. I've never had it freshly roasted
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I think Shmuela Dr Ike’s wife played the sax part but I could be wrong
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
chresti:

I did like it better than Butternut, though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
Little Danny:

re: "Baby That's Me" - it's impossible to tell if organ is even in the mix. The track is just so drenched in echo and heavy production. Just the way I like my '60s pop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Little Danny:

@Chresti: Huh. I'm surprised you don't like smoky flavors! I mean, no BBQ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
Little Danny:

YES TREMOLO ON EVERYTHING PLZ
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
chresti:

I like BBQed meat, not the sauces with smoke flavoring, though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I forgot he was on percussion I knew Donny Hathaway was on keys.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
Franco Twinkie:

Help me out guys, I remember a Professor Longhair song where his baby doesn't love him so he's gonna stay home and eat weenies and beans. Sound familiar or did I hallucinate that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
Matt from New Orleans:

This one is stretching it even more with him on backing vocals
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
Matt from New Orleans:

It’s a good song and apparently has never been performed live by the Stones
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
Matt from New Orleans:

It has been performed live by Phish at a Halloween show where they covered Exile on Main St
Avatar 11:22pm
Kris Holmes:

don't know Franco......
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Btw Kris are you into Kelly Finnigan?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Completely off topic I know
Avatar 11:27pm
Kris Holmes:

i know of him but have not listened to him yet
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I won a limited edition red vinyl copy of his most recent LP but have no record player. If you and Matt do come to visit, it’s yours. It will just be sitting in the cardboard box it was sent in till then.
Avatar 11:32pm
Kris Holmes:

Matt you should get a record player!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
Little Danny:

Wait wut no record player Matt
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
Franco Twinkie:

How did that happen, Matt?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm
Matt from New Orleans:

No fucking interest. I don’t need more clutter in my tiny apartment. I’ve just never owned records on my own. I ripped all my cds years ago and sold them while they were still worth something. I had loads of tapes as a kid for my Walkman but just bought CDs when I started buying music.
Avatar 11:38pm
Kris Holmes:

That's probably smart. I'd be way further ahead in life financially if I hadn't squandered my earnings on vintage records, guitars & motorcycles lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
Franco Twinkie:

Matt, You're a young guy! I got the impression you were older.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I’m 41
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
Little Danny:

But think of all the weird recluse friends you have now, Kris. *cough*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
Franco Twinkie:

That to me is young.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I have plenty of friends who are vinyl addicts so can go hang out at their houses for my occasional fix.
Avatar 11:45pm
Kris Holmes:

Dan you're not weird! Or, we're all a bit weird?
Avatar 11:46pm
Kris Holmes:

Misa calls me a "foreign weirdo" all the time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm
chresti:

Well, I hope LA doesn't make your hair too melty@Kris, it's been triple digits, last couple of days
Avatar 11:48pm
Kris Holmes:

I cut it short so I don't have to use pomade at the moment, it's all natural. Or a cap!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm
Little Danny:

We're all a bit weird here in OCD-adjacent collector corner, but thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I still love you guys and appreciate the fruits of your addictions but I don’t need to join you in your little club
Avatar 11:51pm
Kris Holmes:

Thanks I think?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm
Little Danny:

JOIN US MATT THE WATER IS WARM ONE OF US ONE OF US
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I don’t even know what that meant but I really have no interest in getting sucked into collecting records I don’t have the room or disposable income
Avatar 11:54pm
Kris Holmes:

You make room, furniture becomes unimportant when you're living inbetweent teetering piles of vinyl. It's great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I’ll appreciate the awesome records from afar and deal with the overcompression of listening to them here or the Face or TWR or mixcloud
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm
Little Danny:

Thanks Kris, have a great time in California!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I second that
  11:59pm
Dean:

There are addicted collectors, but there are also archivists. The 'net has so far demonstrated its inability to reconcile these two demands. The technology helps us only so far.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm
Franco Twinkie:

This was terrific. Thanks,Kris.
Avatar 11:59pm
Kris Holmes:

I had a hour long back & forth text message dialog with one of my best friends over the merits of stereo vs mono original presses of 60s soul LPs on Sunday evening. This is what record collecting does to you , this is what keeps me up at nights lol
Avatar 12:00am
Kris Holmes:

Thanks guys, still got next Tuesday's show before we fly out Wednesday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01am
Franco Twinkie:

I put a record player on top of an ironing board this morning so I could listen ti Jimmy Reed out sioe in the heat.
  12:01am
Dean:

"What [it] does to you..." Why isn't that a reasonable question? It's a good question, if you want to answer it with intellectual honesty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01am
Little Danny:

Ah right! Anyway, 'til then!
