Avatar 10:04pm
Kris Holmes:

nah, fly out tomorrow, back sun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm
Matt from New Orleans:

At least that should end my confusion due to poor memory about that subject
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm
Little Danny:

Hey Kris, hey errrbody.

Making a large batch of Tom Kha soup at present.

That's my, um, status update
Avatar 10:07pm
Kris Holmes:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I didn’t sleep well last night and was up crazy early. I think I’ve been listening to music for 16+ hours straight at this point
Avatar 10:10pm
Kris Holmes:

I just freestyled it (Misa hates when I do that) with some beef cashew stirfry
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm
Franco Twinkie:

Kris, Yuh,yuh, yooooou the one takin' care of business, uh huh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm
Little Danny:

absolutely archetypal Texas blues/R&B sound, that Little Junior Parker
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
Little Danny:

Status update #2: no chicory coffee at Porter's Kris. Gonna have to order it online
Avatar 10:12pm
Kris Holmes:

WTF Porter's has gone downhill :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm
Matt from New Orleans:

You can buy kaffir lime leaves in marfa?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
Little Danny:

That Darlene Paul was a new title to me too. Very nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
Little Danny:

I have to buy the Kaffir leaves online, alas. Galangal too. We grow the lemon grass tho!

Only checked Marfa's Porter's, alas, Kris.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
Little Danny:

Huh, always figured Jr. Parker was based in Houston during that time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
Franco Twinkie:

Danny, I must warn you: Remaindred chocolate Easter bunnies might be a safer bet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
Little Danny:

I'm a jaded black coffee drinker and I like weird tastes, though, Franco!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
Little Danny:

Happy to renew chicory talk for another ep of Kris's show either way
Avatar 10:19pm

Kris do you remember seeing TK?
Avatar 10:21pm
Kris Holmes:

i don't exactly, i mean, i remember he played, but i don't remember seeing him
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Little Danny:

I'm sure you're right Kris, looking up an online bio now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Franco Twinkie:

Que onda! Los Sunglows!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm

Fair enough. I remember he sang that song but not much else.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm

That crazy single man Franco at night
Avatar 10:23pm

i wouldn't stake money on me being right in this case Dan
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
Little Danny:

Yeah that was great, that Sunglows
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Btw Danny I went back and listened to the section of your show that only you were privy to. You exaggerated your haranguing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm

greetings Kris and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm

Thanks, and thanks Matt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm

Little Danny:

Heya coel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
coelacanth∅:

hi Matt hi Danny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Matt from New Orleans:

We heard at most mere seconds of the velvet underground song which confused me when people were saying this song, that didn't sound like them to me, was the VU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Franco Twinkie:

Yo, Coel. My Compatriot scholar of the secret manuscripts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Little Danny:

Whoa this Gene Chandler!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Little Danny:

I love a solid Impressions rip
Avatar 10:30pm

it's a beautiful recording, unfortunately my copy needs upgrading, but fortunately it's cheap & i'm just lazy :)
Avatar 10:30pm
Kris Holmes:

written by Curtis btw
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Little Danny:

@Matt: starting this coming Thursday I'm trying out a new streaming client that I hope will solve some of last week's (and many weeks') network issues
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I’ll keep my fingers crossed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
coelacanth∅:

hey Franco!

Matt that was confusing! (at least from the kitchen it was)
i sought out that Masayuki Takayanagi new direction unit though and listened to the whole album!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
Little Danny:

One of my fave early-ish Marvin Gaye 45s. That mod groove
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I like every version of this song I’ve heard
Avatar 10:38pm
Kris Holmes:

the guitar part gets me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
Little Danny:

Didn't know anyone else did this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Little Danny:

I do believe after years of listening to the stuff that Motown is my favorite soul & R&B label. Top talent + so many incredible arrangements
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Maybe you’re right about that. I could have heard a different take. I can’t find any evidence online.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Franco Twinkie:

My girl has gone....so now I get to turn off the air conditioner!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
Matt from New Orleans:

The Paul butterfield blues band covered it
Avatar 10:43pm
Kris Holmes:

i just assumed because it's got writing credit of the whole Miracles
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
Matt from New Orleans:

The artwoods covered it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
Little Danny:

Looks like UK singer Cliff Bennett did it too, haven't heard it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Little Danny:

It definitely makes sense in the context of early '60s British R&B (with some mod scene crossover)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Matt from New Orleans:

There’s a rockabilly version by Marvin rainwater
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Little Danny:

Talk about Motown tracks that were bigger in the UK. This Marvelettes is so good, especially at top volume. Just roaring production
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
coelacanth∅:

Franco i just today turned on the ac for the first time this year. not that it was so hot, but hard rain (and for the next 4 days?) and 100% humidity. i wanted to use an electronic device that is old and i cannot afford to replace it so i had to take some of the water out of the air.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Little Danny:

Talk about bangers! This Mary Wells
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Then it had more covers in the mod revival era
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Little Danny:

Huh. This Mary Wells is a Chicago production
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
Little Danny:

Great set mate
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Franco Twinkie:

Coel, Rain for four days!?! Where the the hell do you live anyway?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
Franco Twinkie:

Thanks for the tutorial, Kris. Filed away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Little Danny:

Dude. Kris. Use the WFMU app
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Little Danny:

Yeah, expert analysis on that Marvin Gaye side. I'm gonna dig into the backstory
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Matt from New Orleans:

That’s what I was going to say Danny
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
coelacanth∅:

5 days, counting late yesterday. i thought i was in upstate ny but i think something's shifted and washington state has moved in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Little Danny:

Who's the guitarist on this Al Green? I dig the licks, recognize them from some Wille Mitchell sides too
Avatar 10:57pm
Kris Holmes:

There's a WFMU app???!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
doctorjazz:

Nice All! Hi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
Little Danny:

Hey doc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
doctorjazz:

Hey, Danny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
Little Danny:

It was like one of the first audio-enabled streaming apps on the market after the iPhone debuted. C'mon son
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Probably teenie Hodges
Avatar 11:00pm
Kris Holmes:

hahahaha, i suck at phoning
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
doctorjazz:

I have the app, but always stream off the home page, seems to sound better to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
Little Danny:

That must be it, Matt, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
doctorjazz:

(But it could be in my head...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
coelacanth∅:

the fmu application is only for "smartphones" right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
Little Danny:

Never noticed a difference, doc, but I wouldn't necessarily recognize slight differences...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm
Little Danny:

Yeah, coel, I think. Android or iOS but not like an older flipphone or Blackberry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
coelacanth∅:

okay thanks Danny. it doesn't apply to me then!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
Franco Twinkie:

Ha,Coel. You a flipper too?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Howard Grimes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
doctorjazz:

If you're just listening out of the phone speaker, makes little difference. But, with decent headphones, the home page connection does sound slightly better to me (the app is a bit edgy). But, the difference IS very small, not worth getting crazy over. (Unless you're already crazy with this sort of stuff).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
Little Danny:

you talkin' the HPB on Broadway?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I love me some James Carr.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
doctorjazz:

That is some set of pipes!
Avatar 11:17pm
Kris Holmes:

the way he holds the syllables & then just what he does with the held notes, OMG
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I’ve gotten into so many arguments with Northern Soulies about James Carr and deep soul in general. They don’t like it because you can’t dance to it.
Avatar 11:18pm
Kris Holmes:

No, Broadway is probably the tied worst location lol
  11:20pm
Dean:

I have a flip-phone. I hate it. I hate so-called smartphones even more. I also hate the printing press, so go figure.

Must disagree with doctorjazz in a couple respects. First, headphones are not the way to listen for quality sound. Nobody hears the world with objects stuck on or in their ears. Second, digital streaming is dangerous territory. We know so little about sound reproduction, and the legacy of hype about digital reproduction urges caution about the mode.

Half Price Books?! Wow, there's one in my town, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
Little Danny:

Haha, used to be okay like 15 years ago

Will be curious to hear some of yer Latin LP haul in future shows
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
Little Danny:

That post is PEAK DEAN. Hey bud
Avatar 11:21pm
Kris Holmes:

Hard soul isn't even that fashionable right now so they don't even like James Carr's "Northern" sides right now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
coelacanth∅:

Franco i have a "smartphone" kind of device but i disabled wi-fi and gps. (i think. i hope)
it's the least expensive phone service i could find.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm
Franco Twinkie:

Matt, Northern Soul purists also wear sta-pressed flairs when it's really hot outside. Why would you listen to people who are clearly nuts?
Avatar 11:22pm
Kris Holmes:

Chronis also says that location used to be the best, but no more, either a staff member is skimming or it just gets hit so hard being in a populated area
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
coelacanth∅:

i actually fucking hate it, the touch screen bullshit. but tracphone didn't offer flip-phones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I don’t listen to them Franco just like antagonizing closed minded people of all sorts
  11:25pm
doctorjazz:

Hey, Dean, we can agree to disagree. I love new a good speaker system (and have one). But headphone listening is a different activity (and as capable of good, if different sound). And live music is hey another, different way to hear music (which can be good orbad, depending on the venue, your seats, your neighbors, etc). As far as digitalsound, you go for the best you can manage...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
Little Danny:

It's amazing to me that in 2019 such purists still exist. But they do. They're bores, always.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I also listen to a radio show from Brisbane Australia called nowhere to run and two of the three hosts hate ska for no real reason that I can ascertain and the third loves to play at least one ska song per show just to antagonize them because they can’t even offer cogent objections. One even stated that she had hated mod jazz until recently but now is more neutral. There’s clearly musical styles I don’t prefer but I’m willing to be exposed to them by someone I respect
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
Franco Twinkie:

Dean, nothing is ever black and white with you, is it? I have a flip phone because I have a serious fuck you attitude about techno-everything. Including this devise i am sitting in front of right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
coelacanth∅:

some people aggressively argue in favor of mono music reproduction too. there is no argument as far as what is more "real-life"-sounding - more like live music; but if they like the way the mono sound hits them in the forehead then no one can argue with that. it's a preference of perception.
(of course, if they're aggressive about their opinion, as so many are, then it's okay to argue!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
Franco Twinkie:

Solipsism is the operative angle here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
Little Danny:

@Matt. Right. I would occasionally troll the garage fonzies at G45 just to watch them freak out over anything that wasn't some '66 moptop fuzz 'n' farfisa predictability...

I can't imagine ever wholesale dismissing even any sub-sub-genre or sub-sub-style.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
Little Danny:

Wow. Great production on this the Fuzz. Deep and hypnotic groove
Avatar 11:35pm
Kris Holmes:

popping drums
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Putting my phone down and gonna listen to the final 20 min. Have a good night everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
Little Danny:

Ahhh, this Bettye is another deep production head-nodder
Avatar 11:41pm
Kris Holmes:

goodnight Matt
  11:42pm
Dean:

I listen to WFMU on my old Chromebook at home and on a crappy Apple at work. Fidelity is not my goal. If it were I'd invest in a decent server and streaming device. Instead, I revel in the transistor radio quality of the playback. It can be a joy.

Speakers are the *least* relevant components of a good system. If everything upstream from the source is decent, you can settle for a huge array of speakers and enjoy endless pleasure.

Everyone's a "purist" when it comes to one thing or another. I don't get the criticism, frankly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm
Little Danny:

Dean, sure, tho I was leveling the purist criticism at a very specific type of record collector
  11:44pm
Dean:

Oops. Gotcha. Mistook the comment, LD.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm
Little Danny:

I do wish there were some sort of AM fidelity browser plugin for shows like Kris's
  11:46pm
Dean:

Franco, you're right. Nothing (except pianos) is black or white with me.
  11:47pm
Dean:

And the history of the USA. That, too, is black or white.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm
Franco Twinkie:

Today I plugged in my Sears 5XL tube amp, and have to admit it sounded like absolute shit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
coelacanth∅:

gnight Matt
  11:51pm
Dean:

Last week, doctorjazz, I was seriously considering acquiring a pair of Duntech Sovereigns. (Never mind my insistence that speakers don't matter.) I've had Dunlavy SC-IVs, which were utterly gorgeous. Couldn't afford to move them, dammit.
  11:52pm
Dean:

Alex's Bar! Fantastic! I heard Tom Verlaine there many years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm
Franco Twinkie:

Tom Verlaine always plays through an old Vox-AC30. THAT is a good speaker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm
coelacanth∅:

a good tube amp is a beautiful thing
  11:58pm

Oddly, I'm a solid state kinda guy.
