Matt from New Orleans:

Kris this one hit me the hardest of the recent deaths. As you’ve probably noticed, young Dave is my avatar. I had one of the best music experiences of my life seeing Dave leading the Pres Hall band sitting at his feet about ten years ago. He went through his solo stuff and lots of Fats stuff and other stuff he wrote/arranged/produced. I saw him a few other times randomly playing trumpet in the band but the night leading the band going through his life’s work was unforgettable.

Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

joining you on this wandering journey, hello Kris and Matt and the rest of you homesters.
Avatar 10:04pm
Kris Holmes:

Yeah, just a phenomenal musical figure. 100 years is a great effort though. Unfortunately I never got to see him play.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm
Dave Sewelson:

Thank you Matt..
Avatar 10:06pm
TDK60:

Great tunes, an episode to click.

chresti at work:

Hi-going home now...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
Little Danny:

Hey Kris, hey all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
Little Danny:

I had a DB LP on Imperial that I think you just referenced. It wasn't very memorable, alas, and I too got rid of it
Avatar 10:19pm
Kris Holmes:

sounds about right, it was very "cashing in" on Fats success.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
Matt from New Orleans:

the house party album is better but still nothing amazing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
Little Danny:

That's the one I'm thinking of, Matt. I recall it being bigger band arrangements
Avatar 10:21pm
Kris Holmes:

Understandable when an artist comes from a time when the game was singles only
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Little Danny:

"Sick & Tired" never gets old to my ears. Perfect hypnotic New Orleans R&B groove
  10:23pm
chresti:

I love this song, first time I heard this version!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Little Danny:

I mean there is actually like a chugging kind of drone going on in it. Similar to Fats Domino's "Shu-Rah"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
doctorjazz:

Hey all, nice sounds here tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Chris Kenner should have been a much bigger success
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
doctorjazz:

Great pipes on Kenner!
Avatar 10:32pm
Kris Holmes:

Jail tends to curtail things "In 1968 Kenner was convicted of statutory rape of a minor and spent three years in Louisiana's Angola prison." :-(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I also think Wilson Pickett has something to do with it
Avatar 10:36pm
Kris Holmes:

His Atlantic LP from 66 isn't bad
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Once he started working with Joe Banashak, the best that could happen was a bigger label picking up the record and give it national exposure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

these beats are irresistible!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Franco Twinkie:

Good gracious, I fall asleep and the party threatens to wreck the house. Kris!!!
Avatar 10:45pm
Kris Holmes:

All these Imperial sides really hang together well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Franco Twinkie:

Sorry I couldn't make down to the LBC, but the late nights out just cause to much havoc on my system. Sorry but true.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Matt from New Orleans:

It’s the big beat
Avatar 10:47pm
Kris Holmes:

It's ok, I know it's a slight drive from LA
Avatar 10:49pm
TDK60:

..lotsa different beats, styles Granny.
  10:55pm
chresti:

Snap crackle pop!
  10:56pm
Dean:

Goddammit, this show's playlist is tempting me to turn off the record on the main system. That record? Carol King's Tapestry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Franco Twinkie:

Turn one hundred and then check out, that is quite a trick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Did you go to Pie’n Burger when you were in Pasadena? I love that place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
Franco Twinkie:

Dude, Poo Bah is my home base! What day were you there?
  11:02pm
Dean:

New Poo Bah? Not so hot these days? I *love* old Poo Bah. One weekend I drifted in and the long-hair-in-shorts guy at the register announced, "Here comes the guy who pays my salary."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
Franco Twinkie:

Dean, Ha ha. That was Jay. He owned the place back then.
  11:05pm
Dean:

It was a top-three record store, without question. And yeah, I spent a lot there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
Franco Twinkie:

Matt, did you actually have a slice of pie with your burger, and if so, which one?
Avatar 11:05pm
Kris Holmes:

There were some comments behind the counter to the tune of "oh this guy's a dealer he's just buying to resell" which is kind of a turn off but whatever, they already priced them & put them out!! Too late to get all snarky about that sort of stuff.
  11:06pm
Dean:

I'm pretty sure I have every last record I bought there, some probably still sealed after...thirty years?
  11:08pm
Dean:

Okay, Carol feels like a natural woman, so now I can come out and play.
Avatar 11:08pm
Kris Holmes:

I was there Thursday. We ate at a great little under the radar taco spot. Tacos Poncitlan
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I’ve had many slices of pie there over the years Franco. Probably Olallieberry but it’s been a bit since my last visit.
Avatar 11:10pm
Kris Holmes:

on Lincoln & Crosby
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
chresti:

There you are, home at last!
  11:12pm
Dean:

Sequences and intersections of street names produce great names. I'd name a kid Lincoln Crosby. Once we were heading west on, maybe, Wilshire or Pico, and we crossed Ridgley, then Hauser: great name!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
chresti:

I got R and B records at PooBahs in the 80s, also reggae
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
Franco Twinkie:

Ron, the owner, told me some guy actually had a heart attack last Friday looking at 45's. They heard a big crash when the records hit the floor, then he stumbled out all fucked up. Ron called 911, and while they were taking him to the hospital he says "I'm not done shopping yet!" True story.
Avatar 11:14pm
Kris Holmes:

WTF
  11:15pm
Dean:

jazz, rock, punk, classical, you name it

I regret not buying the series of Horace Tapscott solo recital LPs when I saw them there.

Sounds like Poo Bah has maybe improved. My last visit was very discouraging.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Trick bag is a killer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm
Franco Twinkie:

Well shit, Kris, I was there later Thursday that night. Our band practices upstairs after hours. That's why I rarely get to hear Little Danny in real time. I'm at Poo Bah singing with the boys.
Avatar 11:21pm
Kris Holmes:

crazy, we could have hung out!! except, we went to ELO in Anaheim that night
  11:24pm
Dean:

Heh, I heard ELO in Anaheim m-a-n-y years ago. Not at the arena but at the convention center. Little Feat opened. Saw 'em again, I'm pretty sure, with Steve Hillage opening.
  11:25pm
Dean:

And still again with opener Widowmaker. The old plein-aire Universal Studios amphitheater.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
Franco Twinkie:

Matt, Pie'n Burger is good with the seasonal fruit pies. Olallieberry is right now! Thanks for reminding me. I could still make it before they close tonight, but they bake in the morning, so I'll just go in before the lunch rush and get a warm slice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
chresti:

The heart attack happened Friday. I remember because I reported it on Daniel Blumin's comments board, after Franco told me.
I saw Alice Cooper and another time, the Kinks at the Anaheim Stadium, late 70s
  11:28pm
Dean:

Anaheim Stadium '76, Gary Wright, Gentle Giant, Peter Frampton, Yes. One of the loudest shows ever, thanks to Patrick Moraz's tizzy synthesizers.
  11:29pm
Dean:

Not too far from Anaheim in Costa Mesa I heard David Johansen at the Cuckoo's Nest with most of the Dolls. I recall wringing out my t-shirt after the show.
Avatar 11:33pm
Kris Holmes:

These early Fats sides are so scrappy!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Unfortunately almost every song Kris played tonight burned in the Universal fire so the already paltry reissue efforts almost ensure that most of these songs are lost aside from old vinyl.
Avatar 11:38pm
Kris Holmes:

:-(
  11:40pm
Dean:

Classical has some amazing noise-reduction/remaster geniuses -- Ward Marston, Mark Obert-Thorn, Andrew Rose, Richard Caniell, etc. -- who manage to revive old, crusty-sounding records. The same could be done from the FD vinyl.
  11:44pm
Dean:

Wenzel's Music Town, RIP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Well the Fats Domino has recent high res digital masters so I’m not as concerned about those. It’s the other artists that probably don’t that concerns me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
Franco Twinkie:

Our homies!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm
Matt from New Orleans:

But in reality now that I say that who knows what the source of those were because that was years after the fire
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I got to see Mighty 3X and he was fantastic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
Matt from New Orleans:

It was hilarious watching Mr Fine Wine try to corral Hannibal and get him where he needed to be.
Avatar 11:50pm
Kris Holmes:

Love him, never saw him :-(
  11:51pm
Dean:

Right. Marston et al. are masters at taking the best source, however defective it might be, and extracting the most information from it while at the same time not compromising quality with heavy-handed noise-reduction.
  11:54pm
Dean:

Caniell is famous for patching full opera productions sourced from radio broadcasts from which chunks of performance were missing for whatever reason with excerpts of contemporary performances including the same artists. Nobody can detect the slice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm
Matt from New Orleans:

www.offbeat.com...
That’s a hilarious interview Hannibal gave before he performed at the Stomp on 2008.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm
chresti:

Thanks Kris!
  11:59pm
Dean:

Make it to Freakbeat?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm
Franco Twinkie:

Next time you're in Pasadena....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Thanks Kris.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01am
chresti:

Freakbeat?
  12:02am
Dean:

Offshoot of Moby Disc, in Sherman Oaks. Moby, back in the day, was the pinnacle.
Avatar 12:03am
Kris Holmes:

no time for freakbeat this trip unfortunately
