It just has this nice organic sound that’s not overproduced

Grilling is hard.

JtotheK:

Hi Dean! I'm enjoying a Rogue Brewery 6 Hop IPA. Does this qualify as a West Coast style IPA???
Avatar 10:37pm
Kris Holmes:

Man, just when I think I have it down, I screw it up again :( Tonight I didn't have enough paper to use my chimney starter so I was just doing lighter fluid on the charcoal & that makes it way harder again
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock clearly did not sample that song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
doctorjazz:

Laugh In!
Avatar 10:39pm
Kris Holmes:

lol, nope
  10:39pm
Dean:

No idea, JK. I, frankly, don't enjoy "hazy" IPAs, so if "West Coast style" means not-hazy, I'm on board. Rogue is in Oregon, and they've done good stuff over the years.

Check out Auburn Ale House's double and triple IPAs.

Kris, I have a gas grill and consistently prove I don't have it down. But I'm learning!

Hello Kris n' folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I love grilling and smoking meat
Avatar 10:42pm

All I ever used for the last 20 years was gas & I had it sorted, sux to be back being lame again
Avatar 10:42pm
Kris Holmes:

I love grilling, I just am no good with charcoal
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
JtotheK:

Lacking a formal definition, internet research finds a comment of 'west coast style ipa's focus on hops' - don't think they are the 'hazy' style. I've seen/tried a few 'hazy style' and found them ok, but agree that they aren't my preference.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Charcoal is a different beast. The heat isn’t consistent across the surface and unlike with a gas grill that you get to know the problem spots are different every time.

I did find one local beer depot that stocks based on region - so there are local breweries, then east coast, west coast, and midwest. But still - many beers I've read about on various WFMU boards are not available locally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Where do you live Jason?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
doctorjazz:

youtu.be...
Yup, it was a regular routine inn Rowan and Martin's Laugh In, Pigmeat Markham started it off, but I believe others kept it going (Sammy Davis Jr in this clip)
  10:47pm
Dean:

West Coast style = hoppy, citrusy, BITTER. NE style = hoppy, savory, smooth. NE seems utterly misguided to me, but then I've never appreciated Dogfishhead's too-rich stuff. Green Flash did a great IPA for a while, not so much anymore. So much for competition.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
JtotheK:

I'm in WI, Matt.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
JtotheK:

Green Flash was carried locally - but I've not come across in a while. I tried the 'Soul Style' IPA and 'West Coast' IPA.
  10:51pm
Dean:

Once upon a time, Green Flash was superb. I miss those days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Lots of good sour beer coming out of Wisconsin between New Glarus and the Funk Factory.
  10:54pm
Dean:

I gotta sour beer brewery blocks from my place, Rare Barrel. Good, but not worth the price.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Matt from New Orleans:

That’s entirely subjective Dean. I do like Rare Barrel but not as an every day drink.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
JtotheK:

Yeah, New Glarus is a solid brewery. I like their Moon Man 'no coast' pale ale. I haven't tried many sours - might need to check some out as a change of pace.

She’s still alive Franco
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm

She was hippie-era photogenic for sure. She had a terrific early (debut?) 45 that got a bit of marginal northern soul play
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
Matt from New Orleans:

And still performs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm

That first album with the Rick Griffin cover makes me think of my first job in the kitchen of an Italian restaurant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm
Little Danny:

@franco: Guessing there were some mood-altering substances involved with cooking Italian?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm

One of my fave Gaye hits, this
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:29pm

I like that Chubby track - and also really like his 'Karate Monkey' 45.

so much goodness in these early Marvin Tamla sides

I don't think I'd ever realized how barely-present the horns were in this production
Avatar 11:30pm
Kris Holmes:

the production on this Doris Troy, the guitar, the piano, the drums, the voices, ooo wee
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
Little Danny:

Flip is killer too

Interesting how ska-adjacent this is
Avatar 11:31pm
Kris Holmes:

Dan, I think from memory there were two versions issued on 45, so depending which version you know best, the other might be weird?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm
Little Danny:

Excellent knowledge, Kris, I'll look into that
Avatar 11:34pm
Kris Holmes:

don't quote me but there is some recollection there, different numbers on the label, different plants etc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
Franco Twinkie:

Danny....not really. I was pretty responsible, and wouldn't go to work loaded.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
Little Danny:

Fuck yeah Logan. Stoked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm
Little Danny:

Has your family accused you yet of losing your accent, Kris?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
Little Danny:

p.s. Not finding anything 'bout two versions of "Doggone," but I haven't given up yet
Avatar 11:46pm
Kris Holmes:

Yep. Absolutely it's happening. I also have to force myself to sound more american otherwise i spend all day repeating myself :(

enjoyed the show Kris, thanks for the tunes! cheers everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm

Neat that "Let's Waddle" nicked a bit of a Nuyorican boogaloo horn riff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm
