	4:04pm Rich in Washington: That's something I've been thinking about doing at KBOO for a while, but haven't actually done yet - do the Green Beret dropped in the jungle with just a KBar knife thing - just show up empty handed and only play stuff from the library.
	4:05pm Rich in Washington: I used to do more shows like that when I started up, just sort of in wonder at the vast library the station has.
	4:06pm Martinibomb: Yup that's exactly what I did. And it's always adventure trying to find stuff quickly. Time makes you pick stuff weather you want to or not hah
	4:06pm Rich in Washington: I've been doing that with vinyl records in the library lately - sort of pick out great LPs out of the library while I'm cooling my jets before my show starts. They have some really good records, still. I had always assumed they'd been picked clean by purges or - AHEM - DJs 'accidentally' taking them home.
	4:06pm Martinibomb: I think it's fun because sometimes you surprise yourself. Just have to keep an open mind
	4:07pm Martinibomb: Do you have any strategies for pulling records? Do you pull it out of the shelf slightly as you're digging and then use them as you need?
	4:08pm Rich in Washington: Right on, Martinibomb - it's like that dream we've all had - you have to pick something out with seconds to lose, get lost on the way back to the air room, all the records you've found turn into something awful, or worse, they're not even records anymore.
	4:08pm Mr Fab: Station mgr Ken says if we ever visit the Mutha Ship, bring a disk drive and go hog wild in the FMU library.
	4:08pm Jan Turkenburg: I used to work like this every now and then, when me and the main technician had created an archive of local artists, but that was at the other station... I'm not sure if or when I will be a complete show of my own at this new station...
	4:09pm Martinibomb: There was a couple of just needle drop and play in this show but it's seamless I think like on the money. hah
	4:09pm Martinibomb: I'd love to get out to wfmu some day for sure.
	4:10pm Rich in Washington: I just set 'em aside in a little stack, usually, if that's what you mean. Most of the LPs in KBOO are on a high shelf in the library. You need a ladder/stepstool,etc. I just spend about ten minutes picking cool records - the records seem to end around the early 90s, so there's a lot of great, weird mid-80s gems in there.
	4:10pm Martinibomb: The vinyl library is in Freeform's studio so it's a little easier to grab stuff

	4:12pm Rich in Washington: The station still has BOTH Shaggs LPs. The fact that no scumbag DJ has stolen them fills my heart with gratitude, kinship, even.
	4:14pm Rich in Washington: You know Sean the Busdriver, right? He's on Instagram sharing some of the cool records and CDs he's discovered in the library. He's probably the station's best library user. He doesn't have his own program, but probably logs more hours than most via all the subbing he does.
	4:14pm Martinibomb: haha I'm trying to setup a Sunday "FreeForm Portland" sessions at KBOO. I guess people don't use it much down there at that time and I think maybe Freeformers could use the gear.

	4:19pm Rich in Washington: Oh yeah. I forget about that kind of thing. I've managed to cobble together a tiny, Rube Goldbergian production studio, so often forget that that's an asset that KBOO has.
	4:20pm Rich in Washington: It's neat to see people who've just found the station and are early volunteers spending lots of time in production rooms, learning, probably having the time of their lives.
	4:23pm Martinibomb: yeah I get excited volunteers at FP but then I don't really have anything for them to do ... yet hah
	4:24pm Rich in Washington: I just gave the daughter and son-in-law a Hazelwood LP this weekend.
	4:24pm Martinibomb: or actually I do. I keep trying to encourage them to just get creative and make stuff... with their phones or whatever they have. Station IDs etc.. and some of them have.
	4:25pm Rich in Washington: Oh. Arthur is also KFFP's engineer? I haven't met him yet.
	4:26pm Martinibomb: Yup! He's pretty nice and knows what he's doing.

	4:28pm Rich in Washington: Yeah. There are - and used to be more - opportunities for volunteers to hit the ground running in audio production and voice work. I cut my teeth doing announcing by producing a weekly community calendar segment (not that you can tell by my goofy on-air voice). I learned a lot about writing a script for radio, audio editing. I can tell what the waveform for UH or UM looks like by sight alone (again, not that you could tell, etc).
	4:30pm Martinibomb: I think Freeform PDX is the punk station in town so audio production should proceed along that ethos

	4:48pm spacebrother: The triangulated it on a friday night, when we thought they'd be out of the office. They showed up at the door and asked my houseguest if there was a transmitter. He said he didn't know. They sent me a cease and desist letter. Left the transmitter on 24/7 until the date of the final warning.

	4:55pm Jan Turkenburg: Not anymore. Logistics are too complicated and there are hardly any listeners as commercial radio is now allowed. But there were up untill 2000 I believe. I shall look it up.

	4:57pm Martinibomb: don't AM waves travel along the ground and Fm is more in the air that's why buildings get in the way of fm?

Escpacially in the east part they where popular, because they were the only ones who'd broadcast a certain kind of Dutch language music, which since long is being called 'piratenmuziek' Every dutch man will know what that is, but it's not that easy to explain

	5:15pm Martinibomb: Much of the gear is from old pirate stations
	5:17pm Jan Turkenburg: I was thinking ... I have a friend who DJ's this kind of music. He would go crazy if I'd offer him one of my coming episodes to fill. Any one who would like that? For me it would be like an episode of the world's worst record radio show, but ... I think I should ask him. It would be in Dutch, because he doesn't speak much English...

	5:23pm Rich in Washington: when my location was to be a LPFM, the FCC contour map was amazing. Due to our elevation and where our place lie on a mountain, the coverage was incredible. It would've even touch North Portland. It felt bad to tell them no, but there was just no way we could accomodate a 30 foot tower on our property, nor a place for a shack.

	5:33pm Martinibomb: I just started using OTA about 2 years ago with a dvr that streams to a roku app. I missed the KID
	5:33pm Rich in Washington: The channel was programmed by Mike Lastra, of Smegma - aka Dr. Amazon. It was things like Residents films, Firesign Theatre movies, documentaries on Captain Beefheart, Brian Eno, Sun Ra, etc. It was crazy. You just couldn't stop watching it because you didn't know what they'd play next.

	5:36pm Mr Fab: yah, i heard they have desktop TV antennas now, making free TV even easier to get. And they have all these weird channels with nothing on 'em. i'd love to have a channel like the one Rich described. But don't you have to buy the rights to all those shows?
	5:36pm Rich in Washington: Is public access on cable still a thing? You'd think the more recently corporately co-opted FCC would've eliminated it.
	5:38pm Rich in Washington: Mike's thing was totally under the radar. I think he also had some kind of connection with local transmitting firms. He once told me, but it was over my head. It was like an unused channel that was ostensibly being used to test the signal, so had to broadcast something.
	5:39pm Rich in Washington: Mike's also the guy who would bring (then) state of the art video equipment to most cool and notable punk rock happenings in Portland, I think owing in no small part to his day job.

	4:19pm Rich in Washington: Oh yeah. I forget about that kind of thing. I've managed to cobble together a tiny, Rube Goldbergian production studio, so often forget that that's an asset that KBOO has.

	4:28pm Rich in Washington: Yeah. There are - and used to be more - opportunities for volunteers to hit the ground running in audio production and voice work. I cut my teeth doing announcing by producing a weekly community calendar segment (not that you can tell by my goofy on-air voice). I learned a lot about writing a script for radio, audio editing. I can tell what the waveform for UH or UM looks like by sight alone (again, not that you could tell, etc).

It would've even touch North Portland. It felt bad to tell them no, but there was just no way we could accomodate a 30 foot tower on our property, nor a place for a shack.

	5:33pm Rich in Washington: The channel was programmed by Mike Lastra, of Smegma - aka Dr. Amazon. It was things like Residents films, Firesign Theatre movies, documentaries on Captain Beefheart, Brian Eno, Sun Ra, etc. It was crazy. You just couldn't stop watching it because you didn't know what they'd play next.

	5:38pm Rich in Washington: Mike's thing was totally under the radar. I think he also had some kind of connection with local transmitting firms. He once told me, but it was over my head. It was like an unused channel that was ostensibly being used to test the signal, so had to broadcast something.
	5:39pm Rich in Washington: Mike's also the guy who would bring (then) state of the art video equipment to most cool and notable punk rock happenings in Portland, I think owing in no small part to his day job.
