Listener comments!

  3:57pm
Martinibomb:

I rooted around in the Freeform Portland library yesterday for your listening pleasure. I don't think it represents what the station plays just what has been donated.
  4:01pm
Martinibomb:

And we're off! This should be interesting
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Hi MB, I'm curious :-)
  4:02pm
Martinibomb:

oh hello Jan I think you might enjoy this show. I could see you doing something like this with the station you're at
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm
Rich in Washington:

Do many DJs use the library at KFFP? If so, I should donate my unwanted CDs and records to them.
Avatar 4:03pm
Mr Fab:

hey, Martinibomb! So, did anyone show up?
  4:03pm
Martinibomb:

@Rich More and more they are but mostly I see people with playlists on their phones and devices. The girl after me was like, oh yeah I really need to use the library more.
  4:04pm
Martinibomb:

@Fab YES! Rock n Roll Ghost dropped in to chat about about the library he's on the committee
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm
Rich in Washington:

That's something I've been thinking about doing at KBOO for a while, but haven't actually done yet - do the Green Beret dropped in the jungle with just a KBar knife thing - just show up empty handed and only play stuff from the library.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm
Rich in Washington:

I used to do more shows like that when I started up, just sort of in wonder at the vast library the station has.
  4:06pm
Martinibomb:

Yup that's exactly what I did. And it's always adventure trying to find stuff quickly. Time makes you pick stuff weather you want to or not hah
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm
Rich in Washington:

I've been doing that with vinyl records in the library lately - sort of pick out great LPs out of the library while I'm cooling my jets before my show starts. They have some really good records, still. I had always assumed they'd been picked clean by purges or - AHEM - DJs 'accidentally' taking them home.
  4:06pm
Martinibomb:

I think it's fun because sometimes you surprise yourself. Just have to keep an open mind
  4:07pm
Martinibomb:

Do you have any strategies for pulling records? Do you pull it out of the shelf slightly as you're digging and then use them as you need?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm
Rich in Washington:

Right on, Martinibomb - it's like that dream we've all had - you have to pick something out with seconds to lose, get lost on the way back to the air room, all the records you've found turn into something awful, or worse, they're not even records anymore.
Avatar 4:08pm
Mr Fab:

Station mgr Ken says if we ever visit the Mutha Ship, bring a disk drive and go hog wild in the FMU library.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm
Jan Turkenburg:

I used to work like this every now and then, when me and the main technician had created an archive of local artists, but that was at the other station... I'm not sure if or when I will be a complete show of my own at this new station...
  4:09pm
Martinibomb:

There was a couple of just needle drop and play in this show but it's seamless I think like on the money. hah
  4:09pm
Martinibomb:

I'd love to get out to wfmu some day for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm
Rich in Washington:

I just set 'em aside in a little stack, usually, if that's what you mean. Most of the LPs in KBOO are on a high shelf in the library. You need a ladder/stepstool,etc. I just spend about ten minutes picking cool records - the records seem to end around the early 90s, so there's a lot of great, weird mid-80s gems in there.
  4:10pm
Martinibomb:

The vinyl library is in Freeform's studio so it's a little easier to grab stuff
  4:11pm
Martinibomb:

I didn't make it out to the cd library because I never felt like I had the time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm
Rich in Washington:

The station still has BOTH Shaggs LPs. The fact that no scumbag DJ has stolen them fills my heart with gratitude, kinship, even.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm
Rich in Washington:

You know Sean the Busdriver, right? He's on Instagram sharing some of the cool records and CDs he's discovered in the library. He's probably the station's best library user. He doesn't have his own program, but probably logs more hours than most via all the subbing he does.
  4:14pm
Martinibomb:

haha I'm trying to setup a Sunday "FreeForm Portland" sessions at KBOO. I guess people don't use it much down there at that time and I think maybe Freeformers could use the gear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm
Rich in Washington:

This is great, Martinibomb! Mandrill!
  4:15pm
Martinibomb:

Can you tell that the M's are close to the Turntables. hahah
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm
Rich in Washington:

You mean live performances? That would be cool. Studio One definitely doesn't get used all the time.
  4:16pm
Martinibomb:

oh man I can't remember what this song is .. it didn't get logged in my playlist
  4:17pm
Martinibomb:

No for doing pre-recorded audio. Making Id's, Promos, Events etc..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm
Rich in Washington:

KBOO and Freeform need a joint Monty Hall.
  4:17pm
Martinibomb:

We share the same chief Engineer now I think?
  4:18pm
Martinibomb:

I think I back announce this song later so I'll update the artist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm
Rich in Washington:

Oh yeah. I forget about that kind of thing. I've managed to cobble together a tiny, Rube Goldbergian production studio, so often forget that that's an asset that KBOO has.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm
Rich in Washington:

It's neat to see people who've just found the station and are early volunteers spending lots of time in production rooms, learning, probably having the time of their lives.
  4:23pm
Martinibomb:

yeah I get excited volunteers at FP but then I don't really have anything for them to do ... yet hah
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm
Rich in Washington:

I just gave the daughter and son-in-law a Hazelwood LP this weekend.
  4:24pm
Martinibomb:

or actually I do. I keep trying to encourage them to just get creative and make stuff... with their phones or whatever they have. Station IDs etc.. and some of them have.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm
Rich in Washington:

Oh. Arthur is also KFFP's engineer? I haven't met him yet.
  4:26pm
Martinibomb:

Yup! He's pretty nice and knows what he's doing.
Avatar 4:27pm
Mr Fab:

Aw man, thx for the Lee Hazlewood. Can't enough of him
  4:27pm
Martinibomb:

Same here Fab.. same here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm
Rich in Washington:

Yeah. There are - and used to be more - opportunities for volunteers to hit the ground running in audio production and voice work. I cut my teeth doing announcing by producing a weekly community calendar segment (not that you can tell by my goofy on-air voice). I learned a lot about writing a script for radio, audio editing. I can tell what the waveform for UH or UM looks like by sight alone (again, not that you could tell, etc).
  4:30pm
Martinibomb:

I think Freeform PDX is the punk station in town so audio production should proceed along that ethos
  4:32pm
Martinibomb:

uknow about KFFD too Rich?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm
Rich in Washington:

That's the KFFP beaverton transmitter?
  4:35pm
Martinibomb:

It was in beaverton, right now it's ontop of Kboo's transmitter at 98.3
Avatar 4:37pm
spacebrother:

PRESENT! SIR!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm
Rich in Washington:

My house was briefly listed on the FCC's database as a LPFM. I was a human radio station! But we couldn't find an acceptable place for the antenna so we had to say no to the license holder. Oh well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm
Rich in Washington:

Hi spacebrother!
  4:38pm
Martinibomb:

Helllrooow SpaceBrother! Hope you're well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm

ruh roh! I am being called to a meeting! Catch you all on the flip flop!
  4:40pm
Martinibomb:

Cya Rich!
  4:40pm
Martinibomb:

I really want to build a low power tv transmitter
  4:41pm
Martinibomb:

and run it like a freeform radio station. like the movie UHF or something hah
Avatar 4:44pm
spacebrother:

I had a pirate FM transmitter on my roof for a year, until the FCC found it.

Ahoy, spacebrother!

Willie Nelson wrote "Pretty Paper" I believe?
Avatar 4:46pm
spacebrother:

Have fun (?) Rich.
  4:46pm
Martinibomb:

@SB no shit? What happened?
  4:47pm
Martinibomb:

He probably did write it but that was a Roy Orbison 45 I found of it down there.. I didn't remember hearing Roy do that song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm
Jan Turkenburg:

@spacebrother: I was never caught ;) Did you have to face a judge? A friend of my had...
Avatar 4:48pm
spacebrother:

The triangulated it on a friday night, when we thought they'd be out of the office. They showed up at the door and asked my houseguest if there was a transmitter. He said he didn't know. They sent me a cease and desist letter. Left the transmitter on 24/7 until the date of the final warning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm
Uncle Michael:

Checkin' it out...yes I am...
Avatar 4:49pm
spacebrother:

Before that, we only had it on nights and weekends to avoid the FCC goons.
Avatar 4:49pm
Mr Fab:

Uncle Michael! Visiting from another WFMU stream. Like a visitor from another dimension.
  4:49pm
Martinibomb:

hello Uncle Michael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm
Jan Turkenburg:

In our country the transmitter would have been confiscated immediately
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm
Uncle Michael:

Hey guys.
Avatar 4:50pm
spacebrother:

I kept the letter, which I proudly display to visitors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm
Jan Turkenburg:

adn EVERYTHING atteched to it at the moment of arrest
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm
Uncle Michael:

Just here to steal ideas...
Avatar 4:50pm
spacebrother:

@ Jan, Wow, they don't mess around.
  4:51pm
Martinibomb:

@UM I also DJ at Freeform Portland/Volunteer and I subbed for another DJ yesterday and recorded myself going through the vinyl library there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm
Jan Turkenburg:

And at this moment the fines are really through the roof. 100.000 euro is not unlikely and there are folkes that keep continuing...
Avatar 4:52pm
spacebrother:

Tasteful set, MB.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm
Jan Turkenburg:

which is unnecessary these days. You can buy an AM frequency now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm
Uncle Michael:

One show a week is enough for me!
  4:53pm
Martinibomb:

Thanks SB! I was grabbing stuff on the fly out of the library luckily the library is in the DJ studio
Avatar 4:53pm
spacebrother:

@ Jan - Anyone doing the oceangoing broadcasting anymore?
  4:54pm
Martinibomb:

@UM same here. When I started doing this show I had to back off my Freeform show. I just sub right now.
Avatar 4:54pm
spacebrother:

aka REAL pirate radio?
  4:55pm
Martinibomb:

OOh I'd love to broadcast on AM
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Not anymore. Logistics are too complicated and there are hardly any listeners as commercial radio is now allowed. But there were up untill 2000 I believe. I shall look it up.
Avatar 4:56pm
spacebrother:

I know a guy in the UK who used to do the offshore broadcasting in the 1960s.
  4:57pm
Martinibomb:

don't AM waves travel along the ground and Fm is more in the air that's why buildings get in the way of fm?
  4:57pm
Martinibomb:

Am travels along the surface is kinda what I mean? I should google it.
Avatar 4:57pm
spacebrother:

I think AM can bounce off the ionosphere. FM is line-of-sight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm
Jan Turkenburg:

14-10-1998 the last one closed down, according to a brief search.
  4:59pm
Martinibomb:

Ahh okay.. I'm reading up on it again on wiki
Avatar 4:59pm
Mr Fab:

Tasteful is right! What are you trying to do Martinibomb, give Sheena's Jungle Room a GOOD reputation or sumthin?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm
Jan Turkenburg:

After that there where a few legal offshore stations for short periods
  5:02pm
Martinibomb:

@Fab hah thanks! I thought a little crossover might be cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm
Jan Turkenburg:

There are still some AM-pirates in our country, though most of them have switched to legal means. Escpacially in the east part they where popular, because they were the only ones who'd broadcast a certain kind of Dutch language music, which since long is being called 'piratenmuziek' Every dutch man will know what that is, but it's not that easy to explain
Avatar 5:12pm
spacebrother:

That's exactly the reason for local-based radio.
  5:13pm
Martinibomb:

thats hyperlocal! really specific. I love it
  5:14pm
Martinibomb:

Do you guys have any ideas for reaching more listeners with a small lower power fm station?
  5:15pm
Martinibomb:

Freeform Portland is a conglomeration of a bunch of pirate radio people joining up
  5:15pm
Martinibomb:

Much of the gear is from old pirate stations
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm
Jan Turkenburg:

I was thinking ... I have a friend who DJ's this kind of music. He would go crazy if I'd offer him one of my coming episodes to fill. Any one who would like that? For me it would be like an episode of the world's worst record radio show, but ... I think I should ask him. It would be in Dutch, because he doesn't speak much English...
Avatar 5:18pm
spacebrother:

That would be amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm
Jan Turkenburg:

It's like schlagers, but the really really simple ones...
  5:19pm
Martinibomb:

that sounds great jan!
Avatar 5:19pm
spacebrother:

@ MB - You could advertise in local publications and also piggyback on the local music scene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm
Jan Turkenburg:

"You left me. My life will never be the same. And You are to blame. Every night I cry and only you know why" That kind of stuff ... Ok, I will ask him and have the xanax ready for myself....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm
Rich in Washington:

Back.
  5:22pm
Martinibomb:

@SB yeah that seems about right. They've got some Dj nights/events going and they put up flyers every so often.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm
Hopey Sockmonkey:

I'm really enjoying this set and also seeing all this radio chat. It's like edu-tainment!
  5:23pm
Martinibomb:

oh it's sad schlager music?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm
Rich in Washington:

when my location was to be a LPFM, the FCC contour map was amazing. Due to our elevation and where our place lie on a mountain, the coverage was incredible. It would've even touch North Portland. It felt bad to tell them no, but there was just no way we could accomodate a 30 foot tower on our property, nor a place for a shack.
  5:24pm
Martinibomb:

Ahh Thanks Hopey! Yup this is the other station I volunteer at.. thought my wfmu fam would dig hearing it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Ok, I'll see if I can organize two hours of this: youtu.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm
Rich in Washington:

We're all human radio stations. We're the transmitter. We're the tower. We're EVERY doggone thing.
  5:25pm

@Jan this stuff reminds me of pop/country a little over here
Avatar 5:26pm
spacebrother:

Black Pope!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm

Yes, it has both country and german schlager elements
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm

@5:14 Martinibomb: give out actual radios as a premium or prize? This came up a few times in KBOO fundraiser meetings. The fact that many people no longer even have radios in their house.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm
Jan Turkenburg:

www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm
Rich in Washington:

someone at the station once said that once they stop shipping new cars with FM radios, we're toast.
  5:29pm
Martinibomb:

@Rich I read that the number one use for Alexa's etc.. is listening to local radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm
Rich in Washington:

That's cool.
  5:29pm
Martinibomb:

@Jan yes this sound like sad ranchera/pop/country to me hahah similar sound
Avatar 5:30pm
Mr Fab:

It's bad enough they've stopped adding tape and CD players n cars. I no longer have a means to play tapes.
  5:30pm
Martinibomb:

@Rich also TV Antenna's OTA is coming back in a big way why not FM?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm
Rich in Washington:

I so want a tape player in my car again!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm
Jan Turkenburg:

You can find them at thriftstores overhere still. Not sure if they'll fit into a modern car...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm
Rich in Washington:

Did you ever see that batshit crazy DTV channel out of portland when the digital tv changeover happened? I think it was 16.3 or something like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm
Rich in Washington:

The KID!
  5:33pm
Martinibomb:

I just started using OTA about 2 years ago with a dvr that streams to a roku app. I missed the KID
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm
Rich in Washington:

The channel was programmed by Mike Lastra, of Smegma - aka Dr. Amazon. It was things like Residents films, Firesign Theatre movies, documentaries on Captain Beefheart, Brian Eno, Sun Ra, etc. It was crazy. You just couldn't stop watching it because you didn't know what they'd play next.
  5:34pm
Martinibomb:

we need something like that again on local ota. Also a small performance space for live tv
  5:35pm
Martinibomb:

I hate that there's no *public access* on over the air tv
Avatar 5:36pm
Mr Fab:

yah, i heard they have desktop TV antennas now, making free TV even easier to get. And they have all these weird channels with nothing on 'em. i'd love to have a channel like the one Rich described. But don't you have to buy the rights to all those shows?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm
Rich in Washington:

Is public access on cable still a thing? You'd think the more recently corporately co-opted FCC would've eliminated it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm
Rich in Washington:

Mike's thing was totally under the radar. I think he also had some kind of connection with local transmitting firms. He once told me, but it was over my head. It was like an unused channel that was ostensibly being used to test the signal, so had to broadcast something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm
Rich in Washington:

Mike's also the guy who would bring (then) state of the art video equipment to most cool and notable punk rock happenings in Portland, I think owing in no small part to his day job.
  5:40pm
Martinibomb:

Hahah Nice guy to know!
  5:42pm
Martinibomb:

I've been recording "The Powers of Matthew Star" late at nigh. Gawd that show is bad but I kinda like it. Star Trek crew behind the scenes etc.. wierd show kept changing the main characters name
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm
Rich in Washington:

oh man. I forgot about that.
  5:45pm
Martinibomb:

It's got some groovy synth bbc radiophonic workshop music going and the whole production kinda reminds me of Thames productions or something.
  5:46pm
Martinibomb:

I mean I guess the production is more like an old Star Trek episode in some ways
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm
Jan Turkenburg:

I just watched "The cloud miners" episode today.
  5:49pm
Martinibomb:

I'm more of a Trek fan than a Wars fan
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm
Jan Turkenburg:

My pirate DJ friend is in for a dutch pirate episode for SJR, btw!
  5:51pm
Martinibomb:

Oh Kewl! That's excellent can't wait for that episode.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Now I think of it... A klezmer episode would also be possible, I believe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm
Jan Turkenburg:

I just can't wait!
  5:52pm
Martinibomb:

oh manI have a soft spot for Klezmer music always loved it even as a wee lad
Avatar 5:53pm
Mr Fab:

well, for just randomly grabbing whatever's at hand, you threw together an excellent show.
  5:54pm
Martinibomb:

I always like the russian klezmer where they dance in a circle with arms crossed.. thought that was so cool as a kid
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm
Hopey Sockmonkey:

I agree, excellent show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm
Jan Turkenburg:

I only really got to know it, when I went to them academy. But I know a few local klezmer groups. And at least one of them would ne more than happy to record a show, is my expectation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm
Rich in Washington:

Indeed! Great show today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Ah, Gamelan!
  5:55pm

@Fab it kind of says something about my taste or way I filter material I suppose?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm
Jan Turkenburg:

I love this
  5:55pm
Martinibomb:

Thank you, Hopey! Rich! Jan! Uncle Michael, and Mr Fab for listening today. It's been a pleasure.
  5:57pm
Martinibomb:

@Jan I wish I knew who the artist was but the record cover was super hard to read best i could get was V/A and title of song.
  5:58pm
Martinibomb:

And I thought it was funny that it was called, "Golden Rain" because I'm really 13 still. heh

And now for something completely different... take care everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm
