This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

we're gonna get all up in and all over this whole scene tonight– every group shares at least one prominent member, and usually three, with any other given group of the night. Ensamble Polifónico Vallenato is an early outing by most of these figures (Eblis Alvarez, Pedro Ojeda, Mario Galeano Toro) during their student days.

Romperayo is Alvarez and Ojeda plus Javier Morales; all 3 are also in Frente Cumbiero, with Mario Galeano Toro, etc., etc

In case NGH doesn't step in and answer your question in some more depth, TDK: it's a slowed-down cumbia, popularized by DJs & often accompanied by cough syrup use. It became a style/aesthetic element of its own as a result

Avatar 9:31pm
Flash Strap:

@dean: then you're left out in the cold, I'm afraid
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm
northguineahills:

@TDK: I'll make a short story long. Way back in 1979, in Monterrey, Mexico, There was a huge cumbia party in the barrio. Now, cough syrup was the drug of choice at the time. So, at one point, the generators started to slowly die, and every szzzzyrupped up, loved it! and then djs started to play cumbia slow on purpose. Pretty soon, live bands did as well, and it spread from Nuevo Leon to the rest Latin America. It's a perfect analog to Dj Screw's chopped & screwed hiphop mixes from Houston a decade later.....

Avatar 9:35pm
Flash Strap:

Your latest record ‘Los Suicidas’ draws on a very specific musical history. Can you explain?

It's a project dedicated to the organ. I was inspired by the ambient Hammond organists in Latin America, a style that developed in parallel to easy listening music genres in 60’s & 70’s. Organists from Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Panamá and Brazil developed a remarkable style performing with backing bands that played traditional instruments, with the organ as the central instrument – in some cases achieving really beautiful results. A sub-genre of organ cumbia was created also. This music is still played at some of the "sonideros" parties in Mexico and is very popular in Ecuador.

Starting from some of these records, I decided to investigate this style, using the timbre of the organ, but developing the style further and turning it into a kind of "impossible organ" music – a kind of un-easy listening.

Which reminds me, I never got to visit Dj Screw's old record store, it was on my bucket list (it closed 2-3 years ago, as his friends kept it going after his death).

I listened today to Rued Langgaard's "Carl Nielsen, Our Great Composer," one of Western musical history's more bizarre objects. From the liner notes:

"Carl Nielsen, Our Great Composer (1948) is one of the isolated composer’s most desperate – and sarcastic – utterances. In a foreword to the piece (the whole text of which is identical to the title) Langgaard complains at having had to live and breathe in a musical Denmark ‘infested’ by Carl Nielsen. Langgaard was highly critical of Nielsen (1865–1931) and his music, even though the latter was one of Langgaard’s most important sources of inspiration around 1920. He submitted his ironical tribute to Nielsen, which is ‘dedicated to “Musical life in Denmark” 1891–1948’ to Danish National Radio incomplete (only the seven opening bars are fully scored) accompanied by the acrid comment that the orchestration could surely be completed by Emil Reesen. Reesen was one of the people who had assisted Carl Nielsen in the orchestration of occasional music. The work comprises thirty-two bars, and after the last bar Langgaard dictates that the work is to be ‘repeated to eternity!’. The present recording of Bo Andersen’s realisation of the score attempts to indicate this."

It was, at least, fun.
