This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hey Flash. To bad I told a funny Dennis Wilson story once already this week. But I refuse to be the tiresome old man who repeats himself.

Hi all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...yerknows - in case ya hadn't heard about these BeachBoys like that...
Avatar 7:35pm Flash Strap:

Hi Doc!
Avatar 7:37pm Franco Twinkie:

Oh what the Hell....A friend of mine was walking down the street in Venice and this album comes flying out the window of a passing car. My friend picks it up, it's Pacific Ocean Blue. The car is stopped at a traffic light and it's Dennis himself. My friend says " Hey! You're Dennis. I love your stuff!" Dennis cracks a sheepish smile and says "Thanks man" a screeches away.
Avatar 7:37pm Flash Strap:

holy shit that's an amazing story man
Avatar 7:38pm Flash Strap:

@Rev: it does bear repeating
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...story also perfect...
Avatar 7:40pm Little Danny:

Wow, nice playlist thusfar!
Avatar 7:41pm Flash Strap:

This track is such an unnecessary, lengthy addendum to a song that embodies precise concision, but I do find it fascinating, even moving
Avatar 7:41pm Flash Strap:

Hi LD!
Avatar 7:43pm Flash Strap:

great, underrated Beach Boys track, this
Avatar 7:43pm Franco Twinkie:

The thing that gives me shivers is he was driving south on Pacific Avenue that goes straight down to Marina Del Rey, where he drowned under his boat....not that day, but that's the place.
Avatar 7:46pm Flash Strap:

I think he spent a lot of time there, yeah
Avatar 7:50pm Franco Twinkie:

Another friend was a stage hand in local 33 and had to pick Dennis up off the stage floor at the Hollywood Bowl because he was so drunk he fell off his stool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Manson song right here. Became 'Never Learn Not to Love You'.
Avatar 7:50pm Flash Strap:

there it is, the bridge Dennis added to Manson's Cease to Exist (aka Never Learn Not to Love)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yurp. Had 45 as a kid - happy Yellow/Orange Capitol label.
Avatar 7:51pm Flash Strap:

@rev: don't think there's any Manson material on "Peaches" actually
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thx.
Avatar 7:53pm Flash Strap:

"Gong" sessions here bares it all if you're generous with the stupidness of it. it's pretty revealing and raw
Avatar 7:54pm Flash Strap:

jesus
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Just like 'Bugged @ My Old Man'...
Avatar 7:55pm Flash Strap:

totally! it's like the "Bugged" for the acid era
Avatar 7:56pm Flash Strap:

sounds disconcertingly like Murry too, which he even points out himself
Avatar 7:58pm Franco Twinkie:

Just think how many artists did similar such things, but burned them in a metal trash can when the acid wore off.

Avatar 8:25pm Flash Strap:

Hi TDK!
Avatar 8:26pm Flash Strap:

Wouldn't It Be Nice (If This Had Closed Surf's Up)
Avatar 8:27pm Franco Twinkie:

Remind me again why any one should care what Mike Love has to say at this point.
Avatar 8:27pm Flash Strap:

to be honest, I always felt this was a worthy inclusion but Surf's Up is a pretty good album closer to Surf's Up... this should have closed the A-side instead of Student Demonstration Time
Avatar 8:29pm Flash Strap:

!!!! belated hello to Doug!
Avatar 8:29pm Flash Strap:

in the end, no D.W. tracks made the cut for Surf's Up, a complete atrocity
Avatar 8:31pm Flash Strap:

@franco: what an absolute asshole Mike Love is. total cop
Avatar 8:32pm coelacanth∅:

hello Evan & all
Avatar 8:33pm geezerette:

hi Coelacanth!
Avatar 8:34pm Little Danny:

Wow. "Fourth of July."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm doctorjazz:

I hate to turn off this lovely music, but it's time to head home. Thank, Evan! (Try to catch more in the car)
Avatar 8:35pm Flash Strap:

@LD: i know man, incredible
Avatar 8:36pm Flash Strap:

bon voyage, Doc! see you in transit if i'm lucky
Avatar 8:37pm Flash Strap:

best track on Holland in my opinion
Avatar 8:37pm Flash Strap:

"sail on sailor" is amazing too though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm doctorjazz:

Love Sail on Sailor...just sayin
Avatar 8:40pm Flash Strap:

me too Doc
Avatar 8:43pm Flash Strap:

"Carry Me Home" was rejected from Holland for being "too dark"; excluded from the "Made in California" compilation for the same reasons... but it's so great, my god
Avatar 8:44pm geezerette:

All lovely ,but the melancholy is profound.
Avatar 8:44pm Flash Strap:

I only really like 2 songs on Carl & the Passions, both written by Dennis. this is the better of the 2 (other being "make it good")
Avatar 8:46pm geezerette:

They can really sound angelic.
Avatar 8:47pm Flash Strap:

how he pulls this sort of bombastic sentimentality off really speaks to how genuine and deep his delivery is
Avatar 8:48pm geezerette:

Absolutely.
Avatar 8:50pm Flash Strap:

once again: only 2 good songs on this album! both Dennis (other being the very good "baby blue")
Avatar 8:50pm Flash Strap:

I get the feeling this was basically made for Pacific Ocean Blue
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm chresti:

This one is kind of yacht music?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm chresti:

Or it starts out that way..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm chresti:

@Love surrounds me
Avatar 8:53pm Flash Strap:

totally, yeah. I think you can say that about a fair amount of his work, actually... though he does transcend, I think
Avatar 8:57pm Flash Strap:

re: Love Surrounds Me & yacht rock – "Time" is a really interesting example of a kind of yacht-y start that gets totally blown out by his deep feeling and oddly avant-garde approach
Avatar 8:58pm TDK60:

..never heard Pacific Ocean Blue and some of this other stuff; like geezerette said, some deep pain amongst the lushness.
Avatar 9:14pm geezerette:

Can hear relationship with Beatles all through playlist too. Sympathetic intellectual interplay between members of each band.
Avatar 9:14pm Flash Strap:

this songs always makes me laugh, such a Roadhouse tableau, I love it
Avatar 9:15pm Flash Strap:

@G: definitely agree
Avatar 9:15pm Franco Twinkie:

I think the term Yacht Rock is a broad and misleading term. It lumps some truly crappy stuff with things that have the outward trappings, but are so much more. Anyway, thanks Flash...gotta go to the farmers market. The Apricots are hitting their peak this week!
Avatar 9:17pm Franco Twinkie:

On The Beach - The dark side of Yacht Rock.
Avatar 9:17pm Flash Strap:

really really agree Franco, tho i guess i feel that way about most genre terms in the end
Avatar 9:18pm Flash Strap:

happy apricot hunting! thanks for hanging out
Avatar 9:19pm Flash Strap:

this whole Neil Young album is so closely evocative of Dennis Wilson's late-60s milieu. I guess they were both hanging out with Manson from time to time too
Avatar 9:20pm geezerette:

Never heard this Neil Young song before.Wow!
Avatar 9:21pm Flash Strap:

it's as good an album as any he ever made, Geeze, highly highly recommended.
Avatar 9:21pm coelacanth∅:

(i will never call any Neil Young album yacht rock)
Avatar 9:22pm Flash Strap:

I agree with that too, Coelacanth
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm chresti:

Nor disco..
Avatar 9:23pm geezerette:

It' beautiful. :)
Avatar 9:23pm Flash Strap:

crazy how long NY's On the Beach was out of print, sadly led to its having a lower profile than it deserves in his canon
Avatar 9:24pm Flash Strap:

it might be his best, though i'd hate to have to say
Avatar 9:27pm Little Danny:

Essential Cohran. Man his two LPs on Zulu are like nothing else.
Avatar 9:28pm Flash Strap:

Really just unbelievable stuff
Avatar 9:28pm Little Danny:

There's a great 30 second clip of him playing his own frankiphone on YT: www.youtube.com...
Avatar 9:29pm geezerette:

I've read the Nevil Shute book and seen the movie.
Don't think there's any connection, but melancholy.
Avatar 9:30pm Flash Strap:

I've seen that I think! I'll double-check after the show.

All the Zulu singles are outrageously good as well
Avatar 9:30pm geezerette:

...The Blues.
Avatar 9:30pm Flash Strap:

How is it, G? I've never read it
Avatar 9:31pm Flash Strap:

or seen the movie, for that matter
Avatar 9:34pm Little Danny:

I have the three Zulu 7"s! Yeah they're blindingly good, and have different, Frankiphone-enhanced recordings of certain LP tracks
Avatar 9:34pm geezerette:

Dark. Appropriately, given subject.
Avatar 9:35pm Flash Strap:

I have the compilations only, so incredibly cool you have those on disc man
Avatar 9:37pm Little Danny:

They were like squarely in the middle of so many of my 7" fetishism's Venn diagrams
Avatar 9:38pm Flash Strap:

yeah, true desert island discs. man i probably have less than 30 singles i just never stepped up to the big leagues in that sense
Avatar 9:40pm Little Danny:

Oh god no, you're way healthier for it.
Avatar 9:40pm coelacanth∅:

yeah Evan (@9.24) fortunately don't have to decide these things. i do have maybe 4 favorites though.

and this beautiful piece. i was going to click that star but...already clicked.
Avatar 9:41pm Flash Strap:

@LD: haha i'm not sure but i'll take that as solace for my wasted life in LPs & MP3s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm fleep:

Could be worse. Could be cassingles.
Avatar 9:46pm Flash Strap:

It's not like I don't have tons of LPs that I keep for one track only, you know?
Avatar 9:47pm Flash Strap:

ah, it's probably not that many... the thing about LPs is that they force you to love more and more of what's on them over time
Avatar 9:47pm TDK60:

Hi my name's TDK60 and my life was wasted lugging many pounds of LPs, cassettes, some 7"s around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm JtotheK:

Digging the program tonight, Flash! Hi everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm fleep:

Hi, TDK60!
Avatar 9:49pm TDK60:

evenin' fleep.
Avatar 9:50pm Little Danny:

Yes, hi and welcome to our support group TDK. You can speak freely here
Avatar 9:50pm Flash Strap:

I think the hardest lot is the one of the 78 collector; much much heavier, way more breakable, altogether entirely more quixotic, tragic. there but for the grace go we
Avatar 9:50pm Flash Strap:

Hi JtotheK! great to have you on board
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm Alex In Illinois:

"TDK60" reminds me of the early 1980s when I was a teen with a '73 VW bus with a tape player. I usually used TDK SA C90 to get an album on each side.
Avatar 9:51pm coelacanth∅:

i started going through all my albums (and eps) a few years ago with the intention to thin my collection (got sidetracked; never finished, but...) i had a rule that, unless the album art was indispensable, it had to have at least 25 minutes (?) of music i like; or 15-20 minutes (?) of music i adore to justify keeping it.
Avatar 9:52pm TDK60:

oh yeh, Alex, 90s were used more by me too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm chresti:

It surely wasn't entirely wasted @TDK60
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm JtotheK:

@Danny 9:27 comment ... that Cohran LP, I looked it up on Discogs and sometimes those pricing stats really are boggling. There is one for sale at $699. However, the lowest price sold was ... 10 cents. Oh my.
Avatar 9:52pm Little Danny:

Totally agree re:78s. I dabble. (I buy like five or six per year.) But there's also so much "undiscovered" or at least unreissued music on 78. Some very cool 1920s exoticism, for instance
Avatar 9:53pm TDK60:

sob...there were some rockin' moments chresti...sigh
Avatar 9:53pm geezerette:

Thanks, Evan! Beautiful show!
Avatar 9:53pm Flash Strap:

yeah me too LD. that last aspect torments me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm Alex In Illinois:

C60 was good for mix tapes, to get an hour of music around a certain theme or mood.
Avatar 9:54pm TDK60:

..well, thanks for the more introspective kind of beach party here tonight, Flash. next time!..
Avatar 9:54pm Little Danny:

Dang. That was fast. Thanks Evan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm JtotheK:

@Flash - agree with your 78 collectro comment. I was talking on Danny's board a few weeks ago about Harry Revel 'Music Out of The Moon' 78 boxset, which I found for $1 and procured even though I have no way to play it.
  9:54pm Doug Schulkind:

Marvelous selectitude, Flash. As is per your want!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm chresti:

thanks Flash, I'm knocked over and out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm Alex In Illinois:

Yes, this was such a different kind of beach music. Glad you brought it out and played it to the multiverse
Avatar 9:55pm coelacanth∅:

i do have 78s, though i never sought them out.
i currently have no means to play them. (at 78 rpm, that is)
Avatar 9:55pm Little Danny:

YOU GUYS!!! Please stay with me now y'hear: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm Alex In Illinois:

I read that if you have some audio capture software and you set it to a certain sampling rate, and play the 78 at 33 or 45, then when you adjust the wave file back to 44,200, it will play the recdoing form the 78 at the right speed.
Avatar 9:58pm Flash Strap:

Hi and thanks Alex!

Goodnight and thanks all! See you next week
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm Alex In Illinois:

See you all at Testify!
