Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

Good afternoon Dave and all. I missed Joe McPhee this week, which sucks. But I really liked the dance show I saw instead, all the more surprising for the heavily classical vocabulary

Weird day yesterday: open doors day at the Paris art school. I love it but don't know anyone there anymore. That proved liberating somehow, I spent more time than ever before chatting with students. I had such a great time cleansing my brain

I'm so old I think most of them though I could turn out to be a buyer. But to their credit none blew me off when I made clear I had no money, it even cleared the way for talking about what they're doing

@coel: Sure, but some people needed that teaching. I'm not sure which side of that divide I was, but I did need the extra jolt at least
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm
fred:

Yeah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm
coelacanth∅:

absolutely,fred.
...i'm trying to remember. i know i was recording all manner of sounds on my panasonic cassette recorder by the time i was 7. i doubt i thought of it as "music" until i heard revolution 9, when i was 8-9.

Avatar 3:04pm
Linda Lee:

we have our innate capabilities & then we have a descriptive language for what we know. not that we're deaf before we can describe what we hear, but language is what helps us feel we're not locked up in our own heads.
Avatar 3:05pm
Linda Lee:

so that's good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm
coelacanth∅:

...and validation that what we're doing isn't just the wasting of time by a kid with some loose screws.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm
fred:

@Linda Lee: I'm half deaf, and very sensitive to language as a struggle. You get it
Avatar 3:11pm
Linda Lee:

yep. sure!
personally i do credit Cage with assisting in the development of a descriptive language for a natural experience of sound. that's not an individual effort anyway, but some people are really blessed with a way to communicate on that level, which, i think, is basically empathic.
Avatar 3:13pm
Linda Lee:

fred, i was suprised to find out that one of the 1960s' best guitarists, the lead player June Millington, is deaf in one ear. the way she talks about music is uniquely intuitive & holistic. neat stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm
fred:

@coel: definitely not wasting time, but the loose screws bit might still stick
