This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Avatar 7:02pm hyde:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Yay, happy birthday to those applicable!
  7:03pm JtotheK:

Hi Explorers! This Lateef was also issued on 45, excellent track!
Avatar 7:03pm hyde:

here for a bit but on my walk home i found out there were fireworks going off tonight at the field three minutes from my house so when the sun goes down i might need to go out there?
Avatar 7:04pm hyde:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm Michael 98145:

Avatar 7:05pm hyde:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm Michael 98145:

fine musics going on around here
Avatar 7:06pm Flash Strap:

Hi Ken! JtotheK! Michael!
Avatar 7:06pm Little Danny:

Also what a beautiful painting, love that Stubbs took a break from stubby-tailed horses occasionally
Avatar 7:07pm Flash Strap:

yeah don't miss fireworks man that's good stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm chresti:

That Zebra looks like it's visiting a different forest in a different land..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Hey! New era: Smartfone & stolen WiFi @ home any hours!...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Michael 98145:

one can identify zebras by their unique patterns
Avatar 7:08pm Flash Strap:

One of my favorite Stubbs outliers for sure!
@chresti: it really does look trepidatious and out of place somehow
Avatar 7:08pm Little Danny:

Whoa, that got crazy kaleidoscopic. Great!
Avatar 7:09pm Flash Strap:

hey RevRab!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm Michael 98145:

@chresti, zebra out of context.

“When you hear hoofbeats behind you, don’t expect to see a zebra.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm chresti:

Oh yeah@Little Danny, Indian Ocean World is great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

We need quiet fireworks for poor Zebras tho'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm chresti:

Pinned back ears, watch out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yay Elvin.
Avatar 7:12pm Little Danny:

re: Stubbs and painters. Flash, have you ever talked about landscape painting of the Hudson River School, esp. Frederic Church? Seems profoundly in your wheelhouse
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Zebras are black with white stripes or white with black stripes? Seems to me that was proven scientifically, but I forget which way it was.
Avatar 7:13pm Little Danny:

p.s. Great sounds thusfar. Didn't know this Elvin Jones LP
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Hm. I think spots are like modified stripes...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm chresti:

good question, Ken
Avatar 7:15pm Flash Strap:

I'm not incredibly knowledgeable about Hudson River School, but I would say it's in my wheelhouse... I'm always cutting up their paintings out of old books for collage

Very much in the vein of the American / European obsession for panorama, with echoes of the Romantic sublime. American exoticism to the point of mythicism. some great tropical paintings too, a lot of those guys did en plein air in the West Indies, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm Michael 98145:

Great quote: "The stripes may help to confuse predators by motion dazzle."
Avatar 7:16pm Flash Strap:

this Elvin Jones is very very cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm Michael 98145:

This entire set has been exceptional.
Avatar 7:16pm Flash Strap:

@ken: i'd guess white w/ black stripes, wonder if i'm wrong?
Avatar 7:17pm Flash Strap:

gracious thanks, Michael
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oh man - Japanese giant robot sci-fi on fb...
ELVIN
Avatar 7:17pm Little Danny:

Yep, and yep, and yep! An incredibly American exoticism
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Michael 98145:

i've never seen a newborn zebra, but i'd rather see than be one
Avatar 7:18pm Flash Strap:

they really painted the American landscape like it was a Sci-fi pulp cover, or a John Martin apocalypse
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Strong Mythology...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Jazz is a Zebra in the Forest of Amurika...
Avatar 7:21pm Flash Strap:

I've been trying to work this Elvin Jones into the show for a few months now, feels sooo good to let it rip
Avatar 7:21pm hyde:

dang, i need this Elvin Jones record.
Avatar 7:23pm Flash Strap:

it's all killer, Hyde
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm chresti:

motion dazzle :0
Avatar 7:24pm Little Danny:

Wow. Nice oboe-like tones from Eddie Baxter. This is way better than I woulda guessed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

They did MotionDazzle on Brit ships in thuh War. Stripey paint & stuff...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm 23 Wolves:

Hey allrite! Show is always so good! Much love.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm Michael 98145:

wild track, mysterious artist. very little Chico Tropico out there
Avatar 7:46pm northguineahills:

Strange I haven't heard that Mike Cooper, and on Room40 Recs, a fave label of mine no less (seems like a different fit for them on the surface, but listening to it, it made sense).
Avatar 7:46pm northguineahills:

Moog exotica cumbia???!!!, count me in!
Avatar 7:47pm hyde:

this is cool
Avatar 7:47pm Flash Strap:

It's a really strong one, I think. I haven't dug into the rest of Room 40 as much as i should
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm Passaic River Blues:

This is damn good.
Avatar 7:47pm Flash Strap:

Hey PBR!
Avatar 7:48pm northguineahills:

I could use a PBR! (I'm not that picky w/ my beer these days).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm Passaic River Blues:

@Flash Strap: greetings!

@NGH: hahaha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm 23 Wolves:

That one was a-way out. Muy rico!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Another Green World...wait! That's kind of Exotica...
Avatar 7:51pm Flash Strap:

muy rico. i need to dig deeper and see if there's more where that came from
Avatar 7:51pm northguineahills:

(I have a few friends who record for Room40. For some reason they all have had Aussie artist residencies in Melbourne which Room40 hooked them up).
Avatar 7:51pm Flash Strap:

i very much think of Green World as exotica yeah
Avatar 7:52pm northguineahills:

So, what about fourth world music, where does that stand on the exotica spectrum?
Avatar 7:54pm Flash Strap:

just another expression of the exotica urge imo, a strain of its own

did a whole Jon Hassell show, and a few more with 4th world sets a while back
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm chresti:

Loved that Dictaphone
Avatar 7:59pm Little Danny:

Exotica is a vast continuum if you squint at right
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Now I get to do the freak the neighbor w/ FMU thing...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm doctorjazz:

Hi Flash, been here but busy with work., checking in.
Avatar 7:59pm Little Danny:

Fourth World Music is most definitely a strain
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm 23 Wolves:

I must say this show is hitting my mood perfectly tonight, taking me to the place I wish to be. Also, Little Danny, your show is aces too! Two of WFMU's best for sure.
Avatar 8:01pm hyde:

ah, classic
Avatar 8:01pm Flash Strap:

Hi Doc!
Glad to mood with you Wolves
Avatar 8:02pm northguineahills:

Wow, Marty Manning's wurly!
Avatar 8:02pm Little Danny:

This website does incredibly in depth reviews of exotica, and it quite appropriately places "classic" space-age exotica along the same scale as certain kinds of ambient techno

www.ambientexotica.com
Avatar 8:02pm Flash Strap:

craazy good organ sounds from this cat! chirps, wiggles, blorps
Avatar 8:02pm Little Danny:

Heya, Wolves! Thank you! You have good tastes
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

I dig that site too LD
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm melinda:

  8:04pm greatb:

Avatar 8:10pm Flash Strap:

Hi Melinda!
Hi GreatB: that one really does have an Eden Ahbez sound doesn't it? great LP all-round too
Avatar 8:11pm hyde:

hey melinda!
Avatar 8:12pm Flash Strap:

i have to say that Thomas Indian Family record is really something
Avatar 8:13pm Flash Strap:

very cool guitar: www.amoeba.com...

I heard Moondog in the Thomas Indian Family song
  8:15pm greatb:

Right, Flash Strap? It's like they made this music in 1933 L.A. and then went out and got a Nutburger
Avatar 8:16pm hyde:

firework time. thanks!

@chresti: oh, very interesting! i'll have to re-listen and find the moondog in that
Avatar 8:17pm Flash Strap:

have fun Hyde! love fireworks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

This kind of is fireworx.
Avatar 8:25pm Flash Strap:

love that exotica vibes intro on this harumi track. so Lyman-sounding
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm Passaic River Blues:

Was just reminded of when Irwin played the Music Factory episode where Tom Wilson interviewed Harumi around the time this record came out: wfmu.org...
Avatar 8:28pm Flash Strap:

whoa, i had no idea that existed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm melinda:

loved the Harumi. Must have missed that episode of the Music Factory, will have to check it out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm melinda:

Speaking of Irwin, he played a selection from your premium, Flash, but I just missed it.
Avatar 8:31pm Flash Strap:

oh how nice! when did he do that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm Passaic River Blues:

O! wondrous Trish!

Harumi, everyone!
Avatar 8:34pm Flash Strap:

Ah hello Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm melinda:

@flash on this week's show. It reminded me that I have a box of unexplored cds and LPs, including your premium! I was waiting until I got the mold inspection report for my house in case it came back with high spore counts, didn't want to contaminate new swag.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm chresti:

Total enjoyment

Avatar 8:46pm Little Danny:

Great insight re: Arthur Lyman? on the Harumi. Gonna have to re-listen
Avatar 8:49pm Flash Strap:

@melinda! very glad you have that!
Avatar 8:49pm Flash Strap:

@LD: i find it striking anyway!
Avatar 8:49pm Little Danny:

This Angel Rada is incredible
Avatar 8:50pm Little Danny:

I used to have Upadesa, it was nowhere this good
Avatar 8:51pm Little Danny:

Haha, whoops
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Passaic River Blues:

This is sparking another WFMU memory: when Trouble had Helado Negro on in 2016 and he cited Angel Rada's "Upadesa" as an inspiration: wfmu.org...
Avatar 8:52pm Flash Strap:

I think I actually prefer Upadesa to all other Rada, but Impressiones Etnosonicas is soo lush.

Jealous you had that one though!
Avatar 8:52pm Flash Strap:

@PBR: oh that's cool
Avatar 8:52pm Little Danny:

Fluke LP find from a Grand Rapids record store years ago
Avatar 8:53pm Flash Strap:

I just love how abrupt everything is on Upadesa, like Tomita getting really nervy and impulsive
Avatar 8:54pm Little Danny:

It's interesting to hear the difference that five years makes either way. This one definitely has some early Tomita tones
Avatar 8:54pm Little Danny:

It happened again
Avatar 8:56pm Flash Strap:

haha LD incredible! i hope history decides we were great minds because we've definitely been thinking alike
Avatar 8:57pm Flash Strap:

compelling elements of glitchiness to this i think
Avatar 9:02pm Little Danny:

Again totally new to me, this Hamel. Great!
Avatar 9:02pm Flash Strap:

cool cover on this Hamel: img.discogs.com...
Avatar 9:05pm Little Danny:

I'm really enjoying everything about this. The tracklisting looks very interesting, unusually exotic-themed for an electronic music LP in the context of early '70s Germany
Avatar 9:05pm Franco Twinkie:

Flash, I'm in a post nap zombie state and this music is perfect for wandering around in my bathrobe and not getting anything done.
Avatar 9:07pm Flash Strap:

@LD: similar with his first group, Between
Avatar 9:08pm Flash Strap:

in a way that's the new age bridge there: krautrock/berlin school, but focused on nature themes & exoticism
Avatar 9:08pm Flash Strap:

hi Franco!
Avatar 9:09pm Little Danny:

Excellent, Flash, that's another new name for me to dig into
Avatar 9:10pm Little Danny:

I'm also now flashing on Edgar Froese's Epsilon In Malaysian Pale
Avatar 9:11pm Flash Strap:

i like the first 2 Between LPs a lot, haven't heard the rest... realizing there's a lot more from them and Hamel as well that I don't know
Avatar 9:11pm Flash Strap:

ah, Epsilon In Malaysian Pale! I couldn't love that one more
