Listener comments!

  12:05am tak:

  12:05am PNW THC:

they sampled a song from Carlos Puebla
  12:22am markr:

Took me a minute to get the playlist up and running but here we all are! How's everybody this beautiful summer evening?
Avatar 12:25am Hams:

getting along ok, mark. really glad i came across that charlie haden record. appreciate it.
  12:28am markr:

Yeah it's an old favorite of mine. Most of tonight's music will be from this millennium, but that one holds up well, I think.
Avatar 12:37am Hams:

yeah, gonna have to find a copy. all-star band.
  12:40am markr:

It's still in print, I'm pretty sure
Avatar 12:55am Scraps:

h’lo hey h’lo Mark R. cheers.
  12:55am markr:

Hey Scraps, long time no see...
Avatar 1:03am Scraps:

yeah, I’m only posting at night (snohomish county washington).
  1:07am markr:

Well, that works out nicely for me, since I only seem to be on at night when I fill in (except for July 4th afternoon this year)
Avatar 1:07am Scraps:

oooh, quantic! from Bewdley, Worcestershire!
  1:11am markr:

Really, my research says he was born in Columbia and now resides in Brooklyn.
  1:15am Johnzon:

this song reminds me of a lou reed song off magic and loss... forget which one...
  1:17am markr:

Well this next song is gonna make you forget every song you ever heard in your life.
Avatar 1:18am Scraps:

this says different (Quantic born) though who knows:

  1:18am Johnzon:

haha, what are song? what was music?
  1:20am markr:

Well, wherever he's from, I like him. No this BETRAY ME song, Johnson.
Avatar 1:23am Scraps:

Wikipedia says Will Holland born in England, moved to Columbia.... don’t know which is right
  1:25am markr:

Oh OK. That makes sense then. My source just left out the born in England part. Just accounted for the move from Columbia to Brooklyn.
Avatar 1:26am Scraps:

Anyway, I like Bewdley, Worcestershire. I want to be from there.
  1:27am markr:

Yeah it sounds like a place where it rains 314 days a year. But those sunny days are a PARTY!
Avatar 1:27am Scraps:

Just the words, mind you
  1:27am Johnzon:

Avatar 1:27am Scraps:

  1:28am markr:

this damn autocorrect, I spelled your name right when I wrote it Mr. Johnzon
  1:29am Johnzon:

apolozgy acczepted
Avatar 1:31am Scraps:

Oh, yeah, I would play a track unheard when called “SPITE ALONE HOLDS ME ALOFT” !
  1:31am Johnzon:

in Worcestershire is Worcestershire sauce just called "sauce"?
Avatar 1:32am Scraps:

They call it “New Hampshire Sauce”
Avatar 1:34am Scraps:

And she is the best rock drummer bar none, IMO. I’m very upset
Avatar 1:35am Scraps:

Tangy! Sweet Tangy Guitar!
  1:36am Johnzon:

I really like that movie
  1:39am markr:

Me too Johnson, I don't think enough people saw it. I think Oscar Isaac is one of this generation's truly great actors.
  1:41am Johnzon:

what else is he in?
  1:41am Johnzon:

there's a lot of great cameos in that movie
  1:42am Johnzon:

John Goodman
  1:43am Johnzon:

Adam Driver
  1:43am markr:

He was tremendous in this very disturbing movie called "Ex Machina"
  1:45am Johnzon:

"very disturbing" is a genre I tend to avoid... but maybe Ill give it a try!
  1:47am markr:

More commercially, he was in the "Star Wars" trilogy.
  1:52am markr:

He's been in a bunch of stuff before Llewyn Davis which is worth seeking out. I didn't know him before that movie, but he's been around awhile
  1:53am Johnzon:

really?! wait... I think I remember him actually, never made the connection he looks a lot different without the beard
  1:54am markr:

Totally different, I know. He was in this really great HBO miniseries where he played the mayor of Yonkers or something. He played Joseph as in Mary & Joseph in a movie called "The Nativity" from 2006. He's done a ton of great stuff.
Avatar 1:55am Scraps:

Love Sylvie Courvoisier.
  1:55am markr:

Only very recently discovered her I'm ashamed to say, Scraps. But better late than never. This album is completely improvised, her and the violinist Mark Feldman, I think it's incredible.
  1:56am Listener Bop Monroe:

Great sets, mr mark r.
Making pecan cashew cookies, cooling now.
Avatar 1:57am Scraps:

And I really like Courvoisier & Feldman, too, the way they cross from jazz to classical and back.

You know they’re married?
  1:58am markr:

Thank you Bop. Every time I do these midnight shifts I find myself getting hungry, and inevitably, somebody writes about food. Last time it was guacamole or salsa or something somebody was making. Those pecan cashew cookies sound goooood.
  1:59am markr:

I did NOT know they're married. WFMU, where the listeners are better-informed than the DJs!
  2:02am Johnzon:

Im not* I didn't even know about CAN when I started listening to fmu
  2:02am Johnzon:

now I too can be a music snob... thanks fmu! jk
  2:07am markr:

I still don't know nothin' about nothin'!
Avatar 2:14am RabidRabbit:

As an Aussie, I respect the name of this performer, hehe:)
Avatar 2:14am Scraps:

I wish I could see & hear New York musicians. I envy you that, Mark R....
Avatar 2:17am Scraps:

Hey, new Panda Bear! Not paying attention, there!
  2:38am rw:

Haven't heard this one in quite some time! Actually, maybe I've never heard it. Thanks for the radio Mr. R! Checking out. Have a good evening everyone!
  2:40am markr:

Thanks for tuning in, rw!
  2:45am Dave Miss:

This is the show That I should have been listening to a along time ago
Avatar 2:51am Scraps:

I try to get every album with Paul Bley on it as I can.
Avatar 2:52am Mark Kingsley:

FYI: Motian is pronounced "Motion," as in movement

Sorry to be that guy. I adored his work, saw him perform numerous times, and whistle his compositions as I putter around the house.

Thanks for a lovely program.
  2:55am markr:

That's what I thought, Mark, then I heard his name pronounced the other way by some stage announcer on some live album and I thought, "Well, he must know what he's talking about."
  2:57am markr:

Hey thanks for tuning in, I know there are always a lot more listeners than commenters, so thanks to all of you for listening. Jesse and I just made a handshake deal for me to come back and fill in for him in a couple of weeks, so--it's not set in stone yet, but look for me again later this month maybe probably. Have a great rest of your week, everybody!
Avatar 2:59am Scraps:

NPR says: His surname is Armenian, and is often mispronounced "Moe-tee-un;" however, Paul Motian pronounced it "MO-shun."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Thanks for that Charlie Haden track. I had a dear friend who was on the front lines of the Spanish Civil War (VALB) and in Havana during the Cuban Missle Crisis. Made me recall her spirit, thank you!
