Is Scott a fan of Jack Kirby?
Avatar 10:20pm
Kris Holmes:

I have no idea what that means?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
coelacanth∅:

chresti regarding what you said before yeah i've apparently met several famous people! i supposed some of them are thankful and some are insulted.

Hey folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I figured you wouldn’t. Scott Free is the alias of a character named Mister Miracle that Jack Kirby created for DC in the early 70s. He’s the world’s greatest escape artist as well as a deity from the planet New Genesis but was raised on the evil planet Apokolips.
Avatar 10:26pm
Kris Holmes:

Ah, comics, completely lost on me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm

Kris, It's funny you're talking about school...I was asleep when Chresti turned up The Count Five. I dreamed of one of those signs that show a big thermometer to indicate how well the fund raiser is doing. It said Psychotic Reaction in big goofy letters and it was staked on the lawn in front of a high school!
Avatar 10:27pm
Kris Holmes:

hahahaha, best fundraiser theme ever
  10:29pm
Dean:

New Yorker recently published a cartoon featuring one of those thermometers. The ask was something like, "Contribute to our big thermometer."

Matt, when I was fifteen I went to my first and last comic book convention, at the Disney Land Hotel no less. There was a crowd standing around this grey haired guy taking emphatically to a group of young fans. I asked my friend Michael, who was tripping on PCP, who he was. He squinted thru his hallucination and said "That's Jack Kirby!" then returned to the personal hell he was going through and never said another word the rest of the afternoon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
doctorjazz:

I Remember Jack Kirby as the Marvel guru, along with Stam Lee. Was not paying attention later when he did DC comics, hadn't realized he did.

Matt from New Orleans:

I met Stan Lee back in the 80s because a good friend’s family owned a newstand distribution business at that time and they distributed Marvel. I discovered that the first house Stan owned was two blocks from where I grew up. He still lived in the neighborhood at that time but in a much larger house and he moved to the west coast not long after.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I used to get all of my comics for free from about 8-13
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm

I’m a big fan of this Brother Jack and him in general
Avatar 11:05pm
Kris Holmes:

yeah this is just a monster of a cut from him
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm
coelacanth∅:

i've never read a comic book. the first comic book i ever even glanced at was when my friend George gave me 2 of them as a birthday present when we were around 11 because they were destined to be valuable one day. (the first superman when it came back (?) and ....something else.)
but a couple a years ago another friend lent/gave me "the smithsonian book of comic-book comics" (hardcover) and it's so fascinating, and entertaining that i've read most of it twice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm
coelacanth∅:

funny -i was just thinking 2 songs ago reminded me of Nina's "revolution"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
Franco Twinkie:

Yes, comics. I have a sidelong and non-linear relation with them that defines my work to this day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm

Franco (@10.43) my 2 experiences with pcp were fantasic and fun. too bad your friend's wasn't.
...mine was probably a very low dose though. laced joints.
Avatar 11:13pm

I wasn't immersed deep, but had to smuggle 'em home a few times when mom cracked down and said I couldn't buy more until I read real books. Funny, I remember certain words being encountered for the first time in comics. One angle on comics days was that Superman/Batman I read in mid to late 60s were often older reprinted stories, so the older vibe and throwbacky aesthetic were familiar part of the exposure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
coelacanth∅:

some of the sunday comics were like that too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
coelacanth∅:

(ie nancy; and beetle baily...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm
coelacanth∅:

- and charlie brown/peanuts.
...i say i didn't read comic books but charlie brown was a significant part of life when i was little and i did read whole books of peanuts comics.
i still love it.
Avatar 11:19pm
still b/p:

Oh, yeah -- Mutt and Jeff, Bringing Up Father (aka Maggie and Jiggs)...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm

yeah mutt and jeff. snuffy smith ...
Avatar 11:21pm

And Henry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm

the child me wondered why charlie brown wore a hat when he was walking outside...and -where the hell was he going? just walking?? who does that?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm
Franco Twinkie:

Coel, We were led to believe that the caps of dust we were doing were mescaline. I too loved it! It was only years later that a chance meeting with our high school friend who supplied us with these suspect capsules admitted to me the charade.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
coelacanth∅:

henry! it's in there, but i might have to pull up an image!
Avatar 11:26pm
still b/p:

You won't regret visiting Henry.

Barney Google and Snuffy Smith, by other passed-pen makers, is still active -- "third longest-running and uninterrupted comics series of all time."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
coelacanth∅:

Franco mine was also clandestine.
my older sister gave me 2 joints. she probably didn't even know.
i went with a friend to my father's house to eat lunch and we smoked one. never made it back to school.
we decided it was probably laced, and heard all the scare stories, but decided a few days later to smoke the 2nd one anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
coelacanth∅:

ohhh, i see. henry! i actually remember that one about the cakes!
Avatar 11:33pm
still b/p:

The mescaline we all did on a ski trip(!) was revealed later to have been purple microdot. Academic distinction by then, I reckon.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
JtotheK:

such a great Temptations 45!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
coelacanth∅:

i didn't even know what mescaline was then. i just took anything. i was told it was "like lsd" but it paled in comparison.
Avatar 11:35pm
Kris Holmes:

agree, such a great Eddie Kendricks lead on it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm
Franco Twinkie:

Before they were codified into a "thing" comics were mysterious and evocative to me. I have spent much time trying to analyze the effect they've had on my way of looking at life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm
Franco Twinkie:

Comics and drugs, Ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
coelacanth∅:

i suppose charlie brown affected me pretty profoundly.
i always related to charlie brown, liked linus, hated lucy, hated violet even more, had a crush on peppermint patty.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
coelacanth∅:

wow is this the original?
Avatar 11:41pm

yes indeed, the gentry played with the avantis many times, covered the song with their blessing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm
coelacanth∅:

they didn't change it much, just sped it up a bit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
Franco Twinkie:

That is so funny! One of The Gentrys was in a drawing class my first year of college. He turned out to be a narc, and set up another guy in the class. We hated that motherfucker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Not sure if you have cable Kris or if you do have VICELAND but this show was really interesting look into some sleazy stories from wrestling www.viceland.com...

Franco haha! motherfucker, i hate 'im too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm

I will just say this: He was so obviously NOT an art student, that it didn't surprise any of us when his cover was blown.
Avatar 11:54pm
Kris Holmes:

hahahahaha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Thanks Kris. I read about the first episode somewhere and then watched the rest as they got posted but haven’t watched any of the other wrestling shows on viceland.
