hey Tom and future people
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05am TomDash:

Hey coelacantho! Hey future!
Avatar 12:08am javakid:

2 for 2 on songs with an undercurrent of unease.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09am coelacanth∅:

speaking of...what's this business about you not being on the next schedule?
  12:12am diciassette:

Oh heck yes!
  12:12am diciassette:

That was for bilders...
  12:13am diciassette:

Did it come out the schedule ? Oh anxiety
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14am TomDash:

well, well, coelacantho let it out of the bag. Sadly, I am not on the Fall Schedule - I couldn't sustain this time slot and I'm angling for a daytime jam but was not yet in the cards...I do have some fill-ins lined up already. And you got me for one more week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14am Scraps:

hey h’lo h’lo hey
Avatar 12:16am javakid:

you've won a bunch of fans Tom - will enjoy your shows wherever they may land.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16am coelacanth∅:

not many changes. but Tom's sadly off it and Scott Williams as well.
Keilidh's back and so's Bethany.
still about 30 hours of wasted airtime/week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16am coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17am TomDash:

Thanks so much javakid and coelcantho for the kind words...been having such a blast doing this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20am Scraps:

goddamnit, arg, etc!

I swear, every schedule I lose at least one favorite — and I’ve not have much favorites left, at this rate....

That’s my selfish reaction. Tom, love your show; I will very much miss it as long as it doesn’t show up in future schedules.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22am TomDash:

Wow - thanks Scraps! Humbled and will be getting back on I hope in the future, just couldn't keep this late night weekend thing going - in the meantime at least one Sept fill-in and a few in November to start...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23am Franco Twinkie:

Me too, Scraps. And by any measure, I'm a newbie around here. Sorry Tom.
  12:23am Agent Peter:

Have greatly enjoyed this run of DatDash as well. Solid on its own but also an excellent followup to MM. Hope you land at a time I'm listening. Plenty of unlistenable stuff during the week I tune out for (not naming names...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23am coelacanth∅:

unfortunately the cards are, and have been for over 5 years now, stacked against punk, metal, noise, outjazz... "edgy" music, by wfmu standards (?) -as far as daytime and evening shifts go.
i guess you could stay if you wanted to do mn>3 or 3>6 right?
that must wear most people down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25am Scraps:

Sinead’s back, at least. And Bethany, even though she’s just on an hour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26am diciassette:

But who isn't back, oh the bitters
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26am diciassette:

to go with the sweets
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30am Scraps:

Yeah, coelacanthØ, it’s very much rock & old rock, even a whole stream.... sigh.

Still, I have lots of years old stuff to page through....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31am coelacanth∅:

well as far as "edgy" music, of course we still have Creamo Coyl and several others; but fmu is like "the left wing" - gradually moving toward the center, where people who couldn't stand being jarred occasionally or cracked wide open maybe a better way to phrase it can now call themselves out there, as they listen to an out there version of the z morning zoo.
(and i like Clay; just not the entire morning show concept)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32am diciassette:

All my favorite shows have been the 12-3/3-6 variety, hmm
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35am coelacanth∅:

Scraps, i like rock and rock and roll; it's more the abundant very commercial radio-friendly pop that bothers me.
(now that all those abominable [non-music] shows are gone)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36am Scraps:

and yeah diciassette, you know what I’m specifically waiting for, and very much disappointed for fall & winter not hearing it....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37am Scraps:

I like rock, just it’s way overserved right now in WFMU. To me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37am coelacanth∅:

(for the record i have nothing against non-music shows; just terrible ones)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39am TomDash:

Yes I probably could have kept this slot if I wanted. And there are lots of good shows at all times! And for those who will miss me at this slot...there's always the archives! ha...thanks again everyone for all the kinds words...I do love doing this so very much!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40am diciassette:

Olivia is replacing Scott Williams whoa. I will miss you TomDash, you just got here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41am TomDash:

thanks diciassette! Will be working on getting another slot - hopefully by NEXT Summer schedule!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43am coelacanth∅:

right! not that many archives!
...+ it really is rare that i listen to archives. as you say there are still lots of good shows on (even if less & less to my liking) and the other streams and then i have my own collection and my own unsound sound endeavors...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44am diciassette:

I saw Bill Direen open for Dan Melchoir, and he was taking requests so I said INQUEST and he played it. The end.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46am Scraps:

coelacanthØ, I thought i was the only one who hated a morning drive show. (I like Clay, but I cordially way dislike the show. Now I can’t listen to three hours every day. This is the first time I mentioned this, and probably the last, because I’m a very much a minority (I think))
  12:48am Agent Peter:

What would you rather hear M-F 6-9am? Just curious not casting anything..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49am diciassette:

Nothing, for hecks sake!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49am diciassette:

good grief 6 am?
  12:52am Todd76%:

Tom - Have been enjoying this summer show and your exemplary fill-ins. Thanks for all the great music and commentary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53am Franco Twinkie:

I believe it is selfish to except people to stay up late to the point of mental and physical ruin to entertain fickle me. who doesn't have a job and can go to bed any time they want. Graveyard shifts are a curse from hell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56am Scraps:

Clay has good taste, so (for instance), I would like Clay playing music for three hours, Agent Peter. For instance.

Franco Twinkie, some people like working graveyard shifts. I did, before I was disabled. Including a radio graveyard shift!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57am Franco Twinkie:

It isn't even 10pm and I need to pass out. Good night and thank you Tom.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57am coelacanth∅:

Scraps i think many people who've been listening to wfmu for a few years have reservations about the high-hype crap. people who came for the music and/or adventures in sound of one sort or another. i came for the music. >40 years ago. never listened to the religious fanatics when they were on, pre internet; so i've always been used to wfmu not being there for me sometimes. but yeah that is what some people call "an insult to one's intelligence".
when tourists point at my tshirt the majority of the time they mention only one show. wake n bake. these are the same people who get in front of the dumb backward locals at the café, and leave their garbage on the tables.
z morning zoo people who now think they're hip because they listen to a bizarroworld version of it.
Avatar 12:58am Fox:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58am coelacanth∅:

whoa, long post!
  1:01am rw:

Did I hear no more Dot Dash Radio in this time slot?? I'm a little bummed. Marty into Dot Dash is a great Saturday evening for me. Accessible yet interesting. We've been having dinners in the back yard with this lineup as our background and it's been perfect! Tom we're going to miss you! Of course we appreciate your giving up Saturday nights and staying up insanely late for us this summer. Totally understandable not to want to return. Thanks for the time you've put in!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01am TomDash:

Hello Fox - welcome to the journey
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01am coelacanth∅:

Agent Peter, when the religious crap was on m-f, 6-9, after fmu got on the www, we had a web-only show each day. a different show every day, like the rest of the schedule. 5 good shows. when Clay's morning zoo came in those shifts were obliterated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03am diciassette:

hello, light conductor
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03am coelacanth∅:

(there once was other religious crap on saturday mornings too, "the david and goliath show")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04am Ken From Hyde Park:

Yeah, going to miss the DotDash, but Marty into Keilidh should be a good time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06am coelacanth∅:

for sure. Marty > Keilidh will be great!
i just wish dotdash radio was moving to another time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07am Scraps:

I still so miss the internet shows Monday through Friday when the israel/religious crap was on. Those shows were great, and suddenly there was nothing (to me). Just now archives for me. Ah, well.
  1:10am rw:

Marty into Keilidh... sounds not so bad. I'm with coel though. Would be nice to have DotDash Radio on the schedule. Tom, hopefully you'll be around for plenty of fill ins!!
  1:11am rw:

Ha! Tim Blake. I have this record. Nicely goofy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11am TomDash:

thanks rw!
  1:11am devlawn:

I don't know if planed or not but WFMU is always a good soundtrack to watch the man burn at burning man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11am coelacanth∅:

i'd bet the wake n bake show is mostly listened to by people in or around new jersey anyway; and if they just broadcast that exactly as they used to broadcast jm in the am, just frequency modulation, and make those shifts freeform again on the web, they wouldn't lose a significant number of listeners.
i have trouble imagining people in germany or scotland or even san francisco give a crap about the wake show.
  1:12am rw:

devlawn, is the man burning?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12am diciassette:

Gee whiz it seems like I've missed out on a few things that went on in the AM before I got here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12am Scraps:

I wish Bronwyn B was back on, damnit.

Ooo-kay. Enough of me complaining.

Again, I look forward to TomDash next time. Cheers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13am coelacanth∅:

devlawn that's really cool! (and i'm sure it's not planned)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13am diciassette:

No more show tunes for the show tunes appreciation society :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14am diciassette:

Bronwyn B is invaluable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14am coelacanth∅:

yeah i've probably just made a few people hate me!
oh well.
  1:15am rw:

coel, I kind of like the wake n bake show. Of course from here I've probably only heard a couple hours worth in all. I'd probably be almost annoyed as you if I were on the east coast.
  1:16am rw:

Actually, I think WFMU plays way better on the west coast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17am Scraps:

Yep. I wrote to Ken extolling Bronwyn B’s virtues. (He didn’t reply, so I’m worried that maybe I made things worse — though I tried to not complain! ... sigh)
  1:18am rw:

But you guys keep crazy hours out there. I hear the city never sleeps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23am coelacanth∅:

diciassette "jm in the am" (jewish moments in the morning) was just that.hosted by a charismatic zionist with an extremely devoted following for decades, who contributed lots of money to the station. just a couple of years ago he moved on to something else and instead of taking the opportunity as more time for freeform radio Ken decided to create the first paid dj position in fmu's history, wake n bake - somehow reasoning that it would create more revenue. maybe it has done that? though i cannot imagine how, and i doubt it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23am diciassette:

oh my gosh saw Ana Roxanne open for Julia Holter and she was amooozing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24am coelacanth∅:

rw i do listen to the tail end of it occasionally.
and to reiterate, i like Clay and i even like his shtick on that show. there are other reasons i'm opposed to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25am diciassette:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28am diciassette:

coelacanthø, thanks for the dope. Had a feeling it all had something to do with John Allen (I'd seen Sex & Broadcasting) but didn't know for sure
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30am coelacanth∅:

rw @1.16 really?! because of the timing of the shows to the time of day?
i'd like to live there for a year and see what i think! last time i was out west i wasn't doing internet things at all. no fmu.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30am TomDash:

Hey diciassette - cool you saw Ana Roxanne!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31am diciassette:

I think so too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32am TomDash:

freak form indeed, would have it no other way! Nice long jam here to catch up on all the comments...wow, loads of them! Thanks Main Course!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32am coelacanth∅:

oh, right d... "JA in the AM" is a goof on that; and he was one of the web-only djs during that time.
...i still haven't seen that documentary; i really should shouldn't i)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33am diciassette:

It really does give one an appreciation for what Ken did/does
  1:35am rw:

coel, Yes! I wake up to Surface Noise, Garbage Time, etc. Those shows are plenty populist in a morning show sort of way for me. Then off to work around the time the noontime shows kick in. Drive home to the Downtown Soulville, etc. and evenings (dinnertime into homework time) are Daniel Blumin and Dave the Spazz into Inflatable Carcass and Nick Name.
  1:37am rw:

coel, the documentary seemed a little dated to me not long after it came out. Worth watching though. Mostly talks about how weird WFMU is and how difficult it is to keep the funding going.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38am coelacanth∅:

Ken saved the station, at least that's how it seems to me. it seriously might not exist now if he hadn't taken over back then.
unfortunately i think he's now lost sight of what made fmu so wonderful to begin with...that wonderfulness that "the masses" would only mock, but now a lot of wfmu is masses-friendly.
  1:38am rw:

Plus some history which you probably know and listened through.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40am coelacanth∅:

(@1.35) rw i can easily see that working.
  1:41am rw:

I'm think-typing out loud here, but I feel like WFMU plays to people my age who came of age during the heyday of college radio. I wonder if it will have much relevance for younger generations.
  1:42am Agent Peter:

Great song. Underrated album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43am diciassette:

What's going to happen when people don't remember what a radio station is?
  1:44am rw:

diciassette, exactly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44am diciassette:

Can we show them episodes of WKRP? Would that work?
  1:45am Agent Peter:

I have youngish kids. They're very unclear on the concept.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46am coelacanth∅:

rw i think you're right, to a large degree anyway; but you never stopped appreciating new sounds, and things new to you - which i think is the common thread of wfmu listeners. (with the morning show being somewhat of an exception to that; though i like to think formerly closed people might open up a bit because of that show)
we're digging on NOT hearing the same great song every damn day or every damn hour - even if it is great.
  1:46am rw:

There's a public radio station out here who's tag line is "Hand Picked Music". I'm guessing to differentiate themselves from algorithmically picked music. Unfortunately whoever's doing the picking has terrible taste.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48am diciassette:

oh shit! I don't think that's going to help anything!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48am coelacanth∅:

hahaha!...but that's sad.
  1:48am rw:

My kids have great taste in music and are both interested in discovery over the comfort of the known.
  1:52am rw:

It IS sad. And frustrating!! Luckily we have this refuge here. For now at least!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54am coelacanth∅:

i like to think if i ever had kids they'd end up with great musical tastes. who knows?
i think i'd be very stressed if/when they started getting influenced by their schoolmates!
  1:59am rw:

Ha! Mostly the neighborhood kids hung out here. I felt like I was doing them all a public service by having weird music playing all the time. The worst was when my daughter was about 14 and would crank misogynistic hip-hop in the car. We had a few discussions over that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01am coelacanth∅:

whew rw. yeah - i'd be stressed out!
  2:01am rw:

Kids need to rebel. It's an important part of growing up.
  2:04am rw:

Oh, man. I'm not getting any work done. Tom!! How's it going in there?? Sounding great out here!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06am coelacanth∅:

that's why i'd be stressed! i wouldn't want it to be happening but forbidding them from something like that is not the answer either. i guess i'd have those same discussions as you had with your daughter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07am Scraps:

True. Also, they might — might — have better taste — at least sometimes — in certain situations — than you. ;-)
  2:08am rw:

Yep. You would. I feel very lucky to have the kids that I do.

Scraps. Let's hope they do!!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10am TomDash:

Going good rw! Will have to read this thread later!
  2:11am rw:

Taste is sort of relative. I had a girlfriend years ago who boasted about having good taste. It was a little weird because she DID have good taste but I used to think, "Who DOESN'T think they have good taste??"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11am coelacanth∅:

haha right
  2:12am rw:

An of course I thought she had good taste!
