Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14am TomDash:

Hey Nate K - thanks for listening live! Will see if I can scrounge up some Weirdos next set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15am mariano:

I've never been the biggest Dead fan, but a few years back, as an exercise in transcending my prejudices, I listened to the first three albums and found quite a few things in there I enjoyed. I know the bootlegs are supposed to be where it's at, but baby steps.
  12:15am Dean:

I remember bumping into Nicky Beat an afternoon in downtown LA as he was delivering flowers. C. 1979.
Avatar 12:16am Franco Twinkie:

Just another choice at the smorgy, RW. If you don't like the green beans, get the tapioca.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16am coelacanth∅:

rw i don't get the fervor either. but i do like the grateful dead, with reservations
  12:17am Dean:

Always loved the Dead, never listened to them. Now, almost fifty years later, I do both.
Avatar 12:19am Franco Twinkie:

Shit. It's a full house tonight. All the know-it-all's are here!
  12:20am Dean:

I know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20am coelacanth∅:

mariano i think the bootleg thing is based on the deadhead culture and the constant desire to relive the good times had at shows.
in my -ever so unpopular- opinion, their studio albums are generally better. no "deadhead" will say that.
...and yeah, the earlier the better. the pre-first album recordings from 1966 are incredible! (though they are live...so i contradict myself...)
Avatar 12:22am Franco Twinkie:

Dean, Nicky worked at this lunch counter around the corner from Chresti's house in Silverlake. He served me a sandwich. Nice guy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23am Nate K.:

Killing it!
  12:23am Dean:

BTW, FT and chresti, yesterday I drove from LA to Berkeley non-stop without having to pull over for gasoline. Around 10:30am, I drove from downtown LA up 5 past...Griffith Park! Thought of chresti.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23am mariano:

Didn't know about the pre-album recordings, @coelacanth∅, thanks for the tip!
  12:24am Agent Peter:

The shows and the albums two totally different things. The free form nature of each show had special appeal, especially if you were there. But even if you weren't there and had been to enough shows you could listen to it differently than assessing it in a vacuum. The live shows became too formulaic in the latter years, imho
  12:25am Dean:

I'm a fan of bootlegs qua bootlegs. Even if the studio albums are better, the archival/documentary evidence presented by arguably illegal recordings entice me.
Avatar 12:25am Franco Twinkie:

She wasn't there. We stayed inside all day. Tomorrow she starts her work week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27am mariano:

I'm 50 now, and when I was young, dropping out for a few months or a year to follow the Dead was still an option. A couple of friends of mine did it for varying periods of time. I never saw them live, but I always liked the idea of that being an option.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28am Scraps:

I really like Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty (yeah, yeah, I know), and some of the albums back & forth, when they are songs. I really don’t like jams, and therefore don’t like live Dead albums — and that is most of what you hear lately, ad nauseum. And the people who play them play them, well, a lot, so I get really tired of them, even though I mostly like them.
  12:29am Dean:

Those who listen to Uncle Michael's Friday morning/afternoon show (depending on where you are) know that I attended every Dead show.
  12:30am rw:

There's an artist in LA named Mark A. Rodriguez who's making GD tape racks as sculpture.
  12:30am rw:

Dean, I'm still trying to figure out how that's possible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30am Yvang:

It's about to be 25 O'clock
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31am TomDash:

Ha - I knew spinning a Dead number would start a conversation. I'm a BIG fan - 60s, 70s live stuff, can't get enough. But we'll be talking about post-punk soon enough???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31am coelacanth∅:

i have an album -legit album but without approval of the band, called vintage dead. tied with "san francisco's grateful dead" as my favorite dead albums. apparently there's a volume 2 of vintage dead but i've never seen it.
you can feel the fire, the raw energy, something that was all but gone within a few years. and the arrangements on songs that stayed in their repertoir (sp) so so SO much better than what they turned into.
(and Bob Weir's singing was actually bearable then - even okay!)
  12:32am Dean:

rw: You miss school on occasion.

Speaking of LA artists, does anybody know David Amico? I know his sister and her husband pretty well.
  12:32am Agent Peter:

plenty of slam dancing punks at mid-80's dead shows fwiw
  12:34am rw:

I've met David. Talked with him a little many years ago. We taught at the same school for a while. Nice guy and a good artist too!

Mariano, I'm 64. When I first saw them as a 16 year old, the culture was not yet a codified thing. As a matter of fact, no one said Dead Head-ever. But sooner than later what so many people rightfully can't get past i.e. the brainless culture, started manifesting itself. For me, there were to many other options to really give a shit. Oh yeah, the sound changed forever when Keith and Donna joined the band.

yeah PigPen checking out hurt, Constanten didn't help, Donna and Keith hurt, Micky hurt sometimes, Garcia got boring, doing the same noodly thing over and over...and over...Weir decided to try to do what Pig Pen did and always sucked at it, and he only got worse the more confident he got...
that said, i like them enough to have a 313 song. 34-hour spotify grateful dad playlist.
  12:47am Dean:

One of my big mistakes: not heading out to El Monte or somewhere else in SGV in the late '70s/early '80s to hear The Fall when they seemingly randomly appeared.
  12:48am Dean:

By the way, The Fall are not "post-" anything. They're punk, pure and simple. (Yes, they are pure and simple.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49am Nate K.:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49am coelacanth∅:

Avatar 12:50am Franco Twinkie:

Dean, David Amico's stuff really appealed to me. When all the painterly painters started getting props in the early '80's Davids work struck me as some one who was brilliant colorist. Restraint for maximum effect.

  12:57am Dean:

That sounds right, Franco! BIG mistake on my part, and I kinda knew it even then.
  12:58am rw:

The Cornhusker, or Earl's Roadhouse, something like that. Anyway, I remember not having a great time. They wouldn't let us sit at the tables if we weren't buying drinks (which we couldn't afford back then) and we couldn't lean against the walls or sit on the floor. Just had to stand on the dance floor and wait for the band, which was good, but I remember being so annoyed it kind of ruined it. I think we had to stand at least a couple hours waiting.
  12:58am rw:

Franco, you were there too! Wild small world.
  1:00am Dean:

Actually, Earl's Roadhouse sounds more like what I remember hearing (on the radio) at the time, but you know, this was forty years ago.

Yes! My Brother-in-laws band, The Silver Chalice opened for them. And my ex brother-in-law did the poster/flyer and was also the DJ. He played Summer Time Blues by Blue Cheer AND Omaha by Moby Grape as The Fall came on stage. Recently he told me he spent the entire time The Fall were playing to drunk to stand up underneath a table on stage next to Brix.

i and everyone i knew called what's called post-punk now punk. did anyone call anything "post punk" at the time? i never even heard that term until at least the mid-90s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32am mariano:

I had this discussion online on another forum. I don't remember hearing the term post-punk till sometime in the 90s, but the person I was gabbing with said it was used back in the day. He was in the UK, so maybe the term was more prominent there?
  1:34am rw:

coel, I remember using the term post-punk in the early '80s. And Emo was called Death Rock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35am Scraps:

I definitely heard postpunk used by the mid80s, used to describe more arty punks, like Wire, Magazine, and yes, The Fall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36am coelacanth∅:

seems like a non-distinctive distinction to me
kind of like most sub-genres there are blurry lines if lines at all; and "punk" is certainly not a time in history, which means there's no reason punk couldn't have been made after the punk era, whenever that was...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36am coelacanth∅:

so wire, which was a punk band, turned into a post-punk band?
  1:36am rw:

Yes! But post punk could not have existed before punk!
  1:36am Tom in Los Angeles:

great set mr Dash!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37am TomDash:

coelacantho - I'm thinking post-punk started being used for in the mid 80s to differentiate bands like Killing Joke, Echo, Joy Division and the like, no? Before the noisy later 80s stuff like Big Black, Sonic Youth, etc I kinda use is as a real easy (read: lazy) term for any arty punk...
Avatar 1:38am Franco Twinkie:

I think most of this post whatever sorting and categorizing is hilarious! I love when rock journalism uses academic tropes to give the subject some heft.
Avatar 1:38am Hubig Pie:

I like my beer cold, my tv loud and my punks arty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39am Scraps:

But sometimes now you hear it to describe goth, coldwave, even new wave and shoegaze, which is.... no.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39am coelacanth∅:

yeah joy division is the example a friend here used to differentiate when we had this same discussion a week ago. (with no conclusion)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39am TomDash:

thanks LA Thom!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40am Scraps:

Yes, I think coelacanthØ, Pink Flag was punk, Chairs Missing was postpunk. It’s a real difference, to me

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43am coelacanth∅:

supposedly...what was claimed at the time... punk was an attitude; which was how bands like the ramones were called punk - when their music was just basic rock n roll.
so if that attitude prevailed in joy division, echo, killing joke why wouldn't it be called "punk"? and why was television and talking heads - very "arty" bands - called punk?

Well, I don’t think Talking Heads were punk. ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46am coelacanth∅:

haha Franco your instinct warned you of an imminent trainwreck
Avatar 1:46am Hubig Pie:

Hey Scraps, I be in Oly , WA in 2 days to visit me mum. Guess I better bring the rain gear
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46am diciassette:

"___ wave! IT's a totally different head"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46am diciassette:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48am coelacanth∅:

and talking heads were called punk at the time (as was Elvis Costello, Wreckless Eric, Blondie etc) it was supposedly about the attitude, not the music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48am Scraps:

And Television was just rock, to me. The only reason they were described by punk was they came out in 1976-77. To me.... (shrug)
  1:50am rw:

Hmmm... As I remember it, punk was reactionary at first, then got codified into a particular segment of the reaction as some bands played with a more "punk" aesthetic and others more "new wave".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51am coelacanth∅:

Scraps that's how it sounds to me too. i discovered television by buying a compilation and there was no mention of punk and i never considered it. i found out years later that they were considered punk.
...but again it was about their relatively irreverent attitude.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52am Scraps:

Yeah, I know... I don’t accept the “attitude” if I’m trying to nail down music. Then I have to know something about the band other than their music.... I mean, mostly I don’t know them, but music I can listen to
  1:52am Tom in Los Angeles:

tv party tonight
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53am Scraps:

All right!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53am coelacanth∅:

i agree Scraps. so let's create new terms that actually describe the music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54am diciassette:

Something happened, and I feel like it couldn't have happened at any other time. This is because the world was supposed to end. In middle school we being scared schnitz-less about the end of the world by our boomer teachers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54am mariano:

Back in the 90s I had a friend who insisted that the Ramones couldn't be punk because they had long hair.
  1:54am rw:

I remember when my kids were little my son had a pair of crab sunglasses. I described them as punk and it confused my daughter who said, those aren't punk. Punk is tough. Those are dorky. I told her in the beginning punk was dorky too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54am coelacanth∅:

Avatar 1:55am Hubig Pie:

I discovered television in '63 when my parents sat me in front of it so I could be babysat by Fred Flinstone
Avatar 1:55am Franco Twinkie:

If your idea of a great rock band was Boston, The Taking Heads were just to peculiar to be anything else. It's funny how the concept punk threatened people. It's as if the very idea would make it impossible for them to ever enjoy music again. Silliness is what it was. Huffing and puffing by some really dumb kids.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55am coelacanth∅:

i was in a punk band in the 80s and i refused to cut my hair because i wasn't about to conform!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55am Scraps:

Man, so many genres in techno..... Little little differences! I gave up genres completely in about the nineties!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56am coelacanth∅:

i wouldn't trust my kids to fred flintstone
  1:56am rw:

I think we're all on the same page.
  1:58am rw:

Time for another beer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58am coelacanth∅:

i just heard a "chime".
- turn the page
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00am diciassette:

"This midnight I will turn into a beer, I will"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00am Scraps:

mariano, I was a punk and I deliberately grew my hair out (early eighties), because I wasn’t to fit any costume of a punk! I said that too to (very few) punks that called me out.
Avatar 2:01am Franco Twinkie:

Yes RW. So much so, that I think I can safely take a break and have a shower without music as we know it devolving any further.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03am coelacanth∅:

Franco, even Costello was pretty peculiar for the moment
...i mean, i remember how it affected pink floyd-lovin' me when i first heard it. it was rough at the edges, raw, snarly and sarcastic. not boston, not zeppelin, not even the 'stones.
not even Iggy -at that time.
Avatar 2:06am Hubig Pie:

Mr. DJ , tonights entertainment has been quite entertaining
  2:08am rw:

This won't make sense to anybody but I think I'm going to make it through September.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08am coelacanth∅:

dip flash
dip flash
dip flash
...Tom what are we gonna talk about next?
  2:10am rw:

Is it dip flash or dead flesh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10am coelacanth∅:

i hope you make it through september; and toward the end of the month i'll start hoping you make it through october...
  2:11am Tom in Los Angeles:

long live the new flesh
  2:11am rw:

cc, I'll be fine. Just looking at the work schedule. September always sucks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12am coelacanth∅:

i always thought it was big flash but one of those lyric sites once told me it's dip flash.
they could've lied.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12am Scraps:

love cronenberg
  2:12am ian:

omg so durrrty
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13am mariano:

@Scraps: this friend of mine was (and still is!) English, and I think over there the look was more important than here. The music scenes over there, at least some of them, seem to have a real tribal element: mods, rockers, etc, and fashion was a big part of it, much like with hip hop in the US. Though to be fair, in the 80s I was a glaring example of the little wannabe punk, had to have the whole uniform. At least for a couple of years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13am mariano:

PS: Ditto on Videodrome and Cronenberg in general.
  2:13am rw:

I've always thought dead flesh because of a car crash, but as I think about it, it's more about the lines in the road. There's never really a crash is there?
  2:15am Tom in Los Angeles:

;) @Scraps
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16am coelacanth∅:

hmm. yeah i think it leaves off in the midst of dealing with the possibility of crashing
  2:17am rw:

Need to reprogram my brain a little... dip flash, dip flash, dip flash, dip flash...
Avatar 2:19am The Count of Al Dente:

Great playlist!
  2:20am ignatatus666:

That playlist was excellent
Avatar 2:20am Hubig Pie:

mariano, don't even get me started on those g'dam teddy boys
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20am coelacanth∅:

mariano i was into the stiffs label stuff right from the get go, and not into dippity do and black leather and all that; so i just had to go to the thrift store and get some old suit jackets and skinny ties. at one point i did peachfuzz the sides of my head. (the rest of my hair was still long though)
  2:25am Tom in Los Angeles:

just wow
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26am DouglasInDallas:

Awesome set for my drunky walk home!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29am TomDash:

I haven't been able to follow along too much, that's what the archive is for - but just wanna say you folks all rule! Thanks for tuning in these few months...feel free to drop me an email through here and I can keep ya posted on fill-ins and future shows...
  2:31am Francis:

I hope next Crack Cloud album will be as excellent as their first two eps . Great playlist !
Avatar 2:31am Franco Twinkie:

Coel, The comp album Hits Greatest Stiffs? The inner sleeve? They show pictures of all these albums that aren't on stiff prefaced with "Some records on other labels you might enjoy"Who the fuck does that!?! Not a great business plan, but if you love music...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32am mariano:

Yeah, I loved the old suit jackets! Started going bald at 24/25, so (thankfully) I never got a chance to delve into the teddy boy look, Hubig, I'd exhausted all my hairstyle options by then.
  2:32am rw:

tom, you actually read this stuff in archive? I need to be a little more careful about what I type.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33am coelacanth∅:

i emailed you earlier, probably while you were busy preparing your program.
funny you mention Creamo Coyl. i did as well. i made an attempt at closure of my previous rant.
please excuse me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36am coelacanth∅:

Franco, shit. i forgot about that! it gave me a good impression anyway. like, "we're in it for the love of it"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36am TomDash:

yep- saw your email coel...no worries at all...will stay in touch!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39am coelacanth∅:

mariano i did load up one of the jackets with safety pins, and a friend and myself wore jackets and ties but no shirts to school once. got a lot of shit for it but as long as we kept them buttoned mostly up they couldn't do anything about it.
Avatar 2:39am Franco Twinkie:

I like this guitar sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40am TomDash:

Funny - 3 months of doing this and its the first time I'm running out of stuff to play! HA!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40am coelacanth∅:

(and i painted every button on one with the ethiopian flag. that was pretty silly)
  2:41am rw:

Probably getting into territory I shouldn't but I wish Creamo C. was on at a better time for me. I catch bits every once in a while in the car but miss his show at night when I could sit and listen for an extended period. I really like his show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41am mariano:

Nice one, @coela!
  2:41am rw:

Tom, you've got less than 20 minutes. We believe in you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41am diciassette:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42am coelacanth∅:

same here rw. i used to listen to him regularly when he was on at night.
i rarely ever heard Brian Turner either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43am coelacanth∅:

diciassette i actually thought it was Tricky at first. but yeah more arab strap than Tricky for sure
  2:44am rw:

I rarely heard Brian T either but felt good that there was interesting programming even when I couldn't listen. Same as I feel about C. Coyle now!
Avatar 2:44am Franco Twinkie:

I'm Fading, but I won't go to bed until this thing is put on the curb.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49am coelacanth∅:

...my heart and i agree.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50am Scraps:

coel, might as well listen to John Monroe!
  2:51am BH:

Being in Central Time (plus my sleep schedule) means almost all of the AM hour shows I hear are the 12am-3am ET timeslot slows. For some reason, 11pm-2am CT seems more manageable than 12-3.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53am coelacanth∅:

i don't know John Monroe so i'd like to check it out but i need to try to sleep. i barely slept last night and i have to do things tomorrow (today)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53am TomDash:

Alright wrapping things up folks, thanks again for all the comments and for digging the show! I have my first fill-in 9/23 @ 12-3PM for Joe Belock and then a couple Marty McSorley's in November...probably more in between (I Hope!)...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53am mariano:

Same here, @BH, in Central too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54am diciassette:

It's always today or tomorrow, or something.
