I’m here Kris. Larry did a boogaloo show last night.
Avatar 10:04pm
Kris Holmes:

Hi Matt. I missed Larry last night. I saw some of the tracks though. He always plays good stuff.

I was about to say that voice doesn't sound like Lee Morgan, the the playlist refreshed to show Kai and now hear him soloing.

Matt from New Orleans:

There’s a part of sidewinder that seemed to quote the beat goes on
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm
Doug Schulkind:

The Long Way is the right way. Good evening, fellow travelers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Or the opposite as sidewinder is older

Hello Kris.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Little Danny:

Have you ever heard Ruby's LP on Zodiac from around that time, Kris? I haven't, definitely curious tho
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
chresti:

wow kettle drums! @He don't really love you
Avatar 10:28pm
Kris Holmes:

I have never had the LP Dan but I might have the mp3s saved somewhere, I remember it being good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I like the first one better than the second Zodiac album. The second one was recorded in Memphis and they were trying for an early 70s stax sound but just couldn’t nail it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Both of the zodiac albums were reissued in the Netherlands last year
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
Little Danny:

Thanks Matt. Makes sense re: 1st vs. 2nd LPs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
Matt from New Orleans:

It wasn’t cut at Stax but in Memphis at Universal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I was saying that the sound was sort of Carla Thomas early 70s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I can’t even remember which tracks I liked over others as I haven’t listened to them in years. I downloaded an LP rip of Black Ruby a while back as there was no cd issue at that time.
Avatar 10:41pm
Kris Holmes:

Ah gotcha, in any case, I'll make a note to go revisit but will prob forget to do so. Everyone was all about Black Ruby back in the late 90s/early 00s, it was a grai, still is I guess
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Black Ruby is going for about $200 for a VG+ copy with a bad sleeve and another $60 for a VG+ LP/sleeve
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Matt from New Orleans:

On discogs
Avatar 10:50pm

that's a pretty wide price bracket lol good ol discogs

Man, Chris Strachwitz first(?) recorded this guy in '65. I hang out at Strachwitz's record store, and he's there a good percentage of the time. He's a treasure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm
Little Danny:

@Dean: he really is a treasure
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
Little Danny:

Man, I don't know why anyone would dislike the accordion, either
  11:45pm
Dean:

He and I share a birthday, too. But he has a few years on me. He's also really tall.
  11:47pm
Dean:

Cripes, he was recording Sonny Simmons around the time I was born!
Avatar 11:48pm

Strachwitz is awesome, total legend
🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
nostrangerer:

Thanks for tunes tonight. Good funky time had by all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm
Little Danny:

I've spent many many many hours at the Strachwitz Frontera Collection, an incredible indexed website of his Latin music collection with images, audio, discographical info, etc. frontera.library.ucla.edu

See, Dean?! Technology is sometimes on the right side of the fence
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm
Little Danny:

Great 'n' rare one this Castro.

Thanks for the tunes Kris!
  11:58pm
Dean:

Dude, I started to learn to program in '76. I ran a network and enterprise system during the '90s. I know the advantages and limitations of technology, just as I know to use a can opener to open cans, rather than to hammer a nail. The problem is our boundless capacity to abuse technology, or take it for granted, or assume it will solve our problems. As a librarian, I assure you that what makes that Frontera site work is not merely the technology. It's the intellectual added value in, e.g., the metadata.

There's this corridor leading west from the main room in Strachwitz's record store to the restrooms and so forth. There you'll find boxes labeled something like, "Rarities from Chris's collection." They consist of boxes of his record collection, including stuff like the Frontera material, that he's unloading. Kind of amazing.

Little Danny:

Thanks Dean, an excellent response
