September 21, 2019: The Electrifying Sound of Mali's Songhoy Blues
Listen to this show:
Pop-up player!
Mali’s Songhoy Blues are one of West Africa’s most rocking bands.
They’ve caught the ears of folks like Iggy Pop, a guest on their sizzling 2017 LP Résistance, and Will Oldham and Femi Kuti - contributors to their new EP Meet Me in the City.
We think they’ll catch your ears live on WFMU this week - and maybe your eyes too: Their extensive North American tour starts this weekend, with a stop at Brooklyn's Baby's All Right Thursday October 24th.

Here's a bit of background on Songhoy Blues and their roots in northern Mali:
Once among the most prominent of Mali's many ethnic groups, the Songhoy now live largely on the margins of the West African nation. Nonetheless, the Songhoy people retain a fierce pride in their history, beliefs, and traditional music. Hailing from the heart of Gao, on the banks of the Niger River, Oumar Touré and Aliou Touré grew up obsessed with hip hop, R&B, and classic rock like The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. They found a kindred spirit and musical brother in guitarist Garba Touré (son of Oumar Touré, long term percussionist in Ali Farka Touré's band). When growing unrest in the north of Mali forced the young men and their families to take refuge in the southern town of Bamako, they decided to turn crisis into opportunity by forming a band. They enlisted drummer Nathanial "Nat" Dembele and baptized their band Songhoy Blues in celebration of their displaced people and culture. (Text from their UK label - Transgressive Records - page. Songhoy Blues' band statement:
Songhoy Blues has always been about resistance. We started the group during a civil war, in the face of a music ban, to create something positive out of adversity, As long as we have music left in us and something to say, we’ll keep fighting each day with music as our weapon, our songs as our resistance. Massive thanks to our illustrious engineers Irene Trudel and Dave Satkowski!
