Favoriting September 28, 2019: Olga Avigail Mieleszczuk's Love Affair with Yiddish Tango

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Tango was all the rage in inter-war Poland. Many popular tangos were written (in Polish) by Jewish composers. But there were also Yiddish tangos: Adaptations of Polish tangos, and original Yiddish songs - including, most poignantly, some written later, during the war, in the Jewish ghettos.

Singer / accordionist / folklorist Olga Avigail Mieleszczuk collaborates with the Warsaw-based band Tango Attack to explore this repertoire on her latest album, Yiddish Tango Live in Jerusalem. She joins us to share the music and the story.

Visit Olga Avigail Mieleszczuk's bountiful website for background on the songs, Yiddish tango and her other projects and albums, videos and more: http://www.olgamieleszczuk.com.pl/
