I got an idea! I'll fill my apt. up with others' overflow CDs/LPs! For pay, I get to listen to it all, and you come by occasionally to get a disc; sorta like a private live-in library. What do ya say?

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:24am
doctorjazz:

I asked this before, but do folks have reliable, not too expensive back up for computer music. I, and a friend of mine, had hard drive failures. Most of my stuff was on external hard drives, which were ok, but I did lose some music (a computer repair person got much of it back, but not all). My friend had about 10,000 CDs worth of music stored on a large external drive; seems he was only able to recover about half
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am

I use Backblaze. Reasonable cost, good back-up. When my external drive died recently (RIP), they sent me a replacement drive for everything, though it took a while. Can recommend.

Will Ehrlich play at services this year, Jeff? Always loved that thought. My temple will have a treat this year...i joined the choir (I'll mostly mouth the singing and smile a lot, have only been able to learn some of it in the 3 rehearsals I could get to. Got the sheet music, but I can't sight read...)
  10:59am
Dean:

From a 1996 Fanfare review of a recorded recital of her six piano sonatas (one of the disks I have):

Ustvolskaya's music is unlike anything we have heard before, but in some ways it is so simple and direct that it seems incredible it didn't exist before. It is gaunt and intense in the extreme—rarely do rhythmic values become more subdivided than the eighth note, and counterpoint is largely two-part throughout. Octaves or parallel dissonances are common as an “orchestrational“ tool in her repertoire of keyboard techniques. Textures are relentless, grinding, bare-boned. Contrasts are abrupt and stark; traditional transitions almost nonexistent. While the music bears a resemblance to Shostakovich's chamber works in their more lean and anguished moments, the similarity goes only so far. Ustvolskaya is a more pure and limited composer than her mentor (self-consciously limited in pursuit of that purity, I suspect).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am

I was hoping you'd play Blues Forever,I love this track (Saw Abrams and band perform it back in the day)
  11:04am
Dean:

Funny you mention punk. Sleepless at 3:00 this morning I decided to read further in M.H. Abrams' The Mirror and the Lamp about Wordsworth's views on poetry. You know, "Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings." The Germs came to mind. But Wordsworth added that poetry "takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility." Not The Germs.
