Ok, I'll start: happy birthday to John Gilmore, b. September 28, 1931.

Howdy D:O Jeff! Glad to catch you at home, where I may freely comment and clicky stars

Hiya, @chresti @ home! Glad to see you.

Ra Ra Re, do contemporary Egyptologists pronounce it Sun Ra, or Sun Re (as they now think the god's name was pronounced, Re [ray]).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm
Jeff Golick:

That's a good question, @northguineahills. Nice to see ya.
Avatar 7:35pm

pet sitting for both of my brothers' brood of pets, 2 15-year old dogs, a 16 year-old cat (and a 2 year old cat). I feel like I'm working at a canine nursing home (haven't had to clean up after the cats yet, just keeping them from fighting).
Avatar 7:36pm
northguineahills:

Wow, just noticed you found the rare track w/ Gilmore in the title... (love his humility).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm
Jeff Golick:

Wow, @ngh. That sounds like...a lot to deal with. Brotherly love, right there.
Avatar 7:37pm

(oh, and a 13-year old dog as well0

My son and his partner paid to have someone walk their dog M-F, for something like 500 dollars a month, when they were both working FT

@chresti: Darn, in NYC, my neighbor only paid me $100/week when she was pregnant and the child wasn't in school, yet. (and I would jog w/ the dog too).

You're welcome! It's rather selfish of me, really, as I'm the first one in line at the buffet.

I'd like to acknowledge a blog post by Sam Byrd that was instrumental in helping me prepare for the show: worldofabstractdreams.blogspot.com...

There was also a comment left on a post at the old Destination: OUT blog (currently offline), which I was able to dig up using the Wayback Machine.

Au contraire, it's above and beyond generous.

Unfortunately, in suburban FL, everyone doesn't seem to have need for dog-walkers...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm

Seems like a real growth area here in NYC...not joking.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:11pm
chresti:

Don't they have to go to work in the burbs of FL?
Avatar 8:13pm
northguineahills:

It's weird, out literally near Disney (not Orlando proper), all of the citrus groves are becoming ticky tacky mcmansion subdivisions.

@chresti: Most walk their dogs in the morning and then again when they get home, but, they work strict 9-5s.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:19pm

Maybe they have top pet boarding/ daycare places @ngh

In the 80s, Ra was all over the clubs in NY (rock, jazz, all sorts of places). Saw him and the Arkestra many times around then, always a fabulous show.

I think that's right re Gilmore's only leader/name LP, @doc.

Can you name another artist with as great a talent/ego ratio?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:59pm
Doug Schulkind:

Jeff, the automated archive created by the station's system will only capture two hours. I hope you are recording this show. If so, email John Dalton later and ask him to post your local recording as the archive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm
Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Doug! I hope your first question is rhetorical, but I cannot name one. As for the second, yeah, got a local recording going; will advise John D.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:02pm
doctorjazz:

Another hour, cool!
Avatar 9:02pm

@Doug: Not that many that recorded as much, but Daniel Carter comes to mind.... (I might be biased)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm

Rare D:O Radio fill-in (for Five Miles to Midnight w The Knave), but it being John Gilmore's birthday was too good an opportunity to pass up.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:07pm

@northguineahills
That's a nice call. Daniel Carter is deserving of monumental adoration.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:08pm

Daniel Carter played today at Arts for Art's Sake in Manhattan (Dave Sewelson posted a link to their weekend series, Earlier today, that he's playing at as well...)

www.artsforart.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm

(Dave posted that at Steve Swell's urging, too, via playlist comment, which was kinda cool.)

I hope I can get myself to NYC again soon, so I can give Daniel a hug....

oh, this is lovely.
it's good to live it again.
  9:35pm

you're minin' some good ones tonight Jeff! The challenge with Sun Ra (unlike, say the Dead) is to have so much reliably amazing material to choose from!
Avatar 9:37pm
geezerette:

As good as it gets.
  9:41pm
greatb:

yeah Daniel Carter seems very approachable when i've seen him at gigs, he don't care, he'll chat with you
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:49pm
doctorjazz:

They often sound like a regular post bop band (like now). But, the Arkestra could sound like Fletcher Henderson then go into Space is the Place
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm
Jeff Golick:

Yup. Gilmore is just so perpetually LISTENABLE, y'know? Not the accolade he deserves...but his flow/tone/rhythm...it's so wonderful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm
Jeff Golick:

I mean, Gilmore's cited influences are Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Stan Getz...
Avatar 9:53pm
geezerette:

He's brilliant. Ain't nuthin wrong with beauty.
Ha, or some people's dissonance!
  9:55pm

I definitely hear the Fletcher Henderson and Charlie. Yeah Coltrane got his due but stole a little of Gilmore's thunder...
