Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Velma deSelby-Bowen, my wife, died October 18 2014, five year ago today. We loved Broadway songs, and we loved going out and singing and listening to other (professional) people sing at piano bars in New York. In the last four or five years of her life, we must have gone out ten times or so every month to piano bars, and our favorite was Rose’s Turn in Greenwich Village, named after a Sondhein/Styne song. We learned to sing in public with piano accompaniment there (I, pretty good eventually, Velma much better), and we made friends of the staff there. We were devastated when it closed, and lots of people were devastated also; the New York Times had a story on its closing, and they had a Times had a video, of which I was the only amateur singing (ten seconds singing Randy Newman’s “Political Science”).
Anyway, of course I remember Velma any time I hear Broadway tunes, today especially.
